Chapter 90 - "Veils,Gold,And The Heat That Walked Free"

**Chapter 90: "Veils, Gold, and the Heat That Walked Free"**

**Volume 5 – Exodus**

---

The morning at Willowbrook High began like any other until the first scream cut through the intercom.

Brihaana Armandos stood in the center of the main courtyard with a sawed-off shotgun resting on her shoulder and a smile that did not belong on a living face. Behind her, twenty armed men in black jackets herded students and teachers into tight clusters. Her voice carried across the asphalt without a megaphone.

"Everyone stays quiet. Everyone stays still. My husband is in a cage right now because of people like you. Until I hear he is free, this school belongs to me."

Sirens wailed in the distance. Blue and red lights painted the fence line. Detective Ava Reyes stepped out of her unmarked car, badge already in hand, eyes scanning the crowd with the cold precision of someone who had seen too many hostage situations end badly. Then her gaze locked on a figure near the bleachers.

Xarak.

The Demon Vampire stood among the hostages like he had always been a student, pale hands in his pockets, crimson eyes half-lidded. Ava's breath left her in a single sharp exhale. She whispered into her radio, "Xarak is on site. Do not engage yet. I repeat—"

Inside the science wing, Kevin Leister, Wyatt Freeman, Bella, Bandile, Lucifer Jr., Koa, Huxley, and a cluster of other powered teenagers had already begun to move. Kevin's Matrix pulsed under his shirt like a second heartbeat. Wyatt's presence grounded them the way it always did.

"We hit the side exits," Kevin whispered. "Get as many kids out as we can before—"

A metal door slammed open. Three of Brihaana's men stepped through with rifles raised. The teenagers froze. Within seconds they were forced to their knees, wrists bound with thick plastic zip-ties. Huxley snarled under his breath. Bandile's telekinesis twitched uselessly against the bindings. Bella's feathers tried to push through her skin and failed.

Ben Growe, the small Grade 7 boy from earlier, was shoved into the same group. He looked at Huxley with wide eyes. Huxley, still embarrassed from the hallway, muttered, "Just stay behind me, kid."

Outside, Ava's hand hovered near her sidearm while Xarak smiled at her across the courtyard like they shared a private joke.

**Police Station – Holding Cells**

Diego Ramirez sat on the metal bench with his hands cuffed in front of him. Jordan Pitas stood outside the bars, cyborg cannons folded along his forearms. Beside him stood his new lieutenant and Callie Bryant, still in tactical gear from the earlier raid.

Diego looked up. The temperature in the cell began to drop.

Not the supernatural cold of Hades. Something hungrier.

Heat fled the room in a silent rush. Frost did not form. The air simply became empty of warmth. Diego stood. The cuffs glowed cherry-red for a second and then fell away as soft metal. He walked through the bars as if they were smoke.

Callie raised her weapon. "Don't—"

Diego's hand came out of his pocket holding a compact pistol. Two shots. Callie folded, blood blooming across her vest.

Jordan's roar shook the corridor. "NOOOOOOO!"

His cyborg cannons unfolded with a hydraulic scream and unleashed twin beams of pure kinetic force. Diego raised one hand. The energy vanished into his palm like water into dry earth. He absorbed every joule, every degree of heat the weapons had generated, and smiled.

Jordan grabbed Callie's limp form, hauled her over his shoulder, and ran. Behind him Diego stepped out of the ruined cell, past screaming officers, past locked doors that simply opened when he touched them. He walked into the morning sunlight a free man, the stolen heat of an entire station rolling off his skin in invisible waves.

Jordan's car screeched out of the lot, racing toward Guardians of Destiny headquarters with Callie bleeding in the passenger seat.

Diego watched them go. Then he laughed once, soft and satisfied, and disappeared into the city.

**Guardians of Destiny Society – Monster Tear Site**

Garcia's voice crackled over the comms. "Khaos Hyde. Poison. Garfield Greenbrier. Monster Tear, sector seven. Contain or close. Move."

The newest recruit, Garfield Greenbrier, flexed his fingers as green light gathered around them. Grass Control. Simple. Deadly if used right. He glanced at the two veterans beside him.

Khaos Hyde's chaos energy already shimmered like heat haze around his fists. Poison walked in silence, toxins ready beneath his skin.

They stepped into the Tear.

The space inside was wrong—gold-flecked darkness that stretched farther than the physical room should have allowed. In the distance a single golden hand rested on the ground. It flexed. Then a man made entirely of living gold rose from the floor, smiling with molten joy.

"I am Midas!!!! I am finally freeee! You opened the Tear—thank you so much. But because I cannot simply thank you and walk away… I will have to kill you."

Khaos Hyde roared and charged, chaos energy exploding outward in a violet-black wave. Midas sidestepped with impossible grace and struck. Poison lunged, spraying a cloud of neurotoxin. Midas's golden fingers brushed Poison's wrist.

The transformation was instant.

Poison's skin hardened, shone, and locked into pure gold. He toppled, statue-still, eyes frozen in shock.

"NOOOOOOOOO! BROTHER!!!!!"

Khaos Hyde's scream tore through the Tear. He slammed into Midas with a flurry of punches, each one cracking the golden surface. Then he gathered everything he had and fired a chaos beam so dense the air itself screamed. Midas was hurled across the space, slamming into the far wall.

Midas rose, laughing, and lunged. His golden hand clamped onto Khaos Hyde's chest.

Nothing happened.

Chaos energy roared inside Khaos like a living barrier, a storm of pure disorder that the golden touch could not overwrite. Khaos Hyde looked down at the hand on his chest, then up at Midas's face, and laughed—a raw, furious sound.

He grabbed Midas's arm with both hands and tore.

Golden blood that was not blood sprayed. The arm came free with a sound like breaking bells. Midas staggered, howling.

Garfield's voice cut through the chaos. "Technique One: Lawnmower!"

Blades of grass erupted from the ground in a spinning storm of razor edges, wrapping Midas's legs and remaining arm, binding him in a living green cage.

Khaos Hyde scooped up Poison's golden body without a word. Garfield tightened the grass restraints, then both of them leapt back through the Tear. Outside, they forced the rift closed.

For three seconds it held.

Then the Tear hummed, shuddered, and ripped open wider than before. Dozens of Extraordinaries and Wrathborn poured out in a flood of mismatched powers and screaming faces. Midas, one-armed and laughing with pure vengeance, locked eyes with Khaos Hyde across the chaos.

Then he vanished into the flood of escaping monsters, golden blood still dripping from the stump of his arm.

**Kruger National Park – Inside the Veil**

The sky above the park turned the color of old bruises. A perfect spherical veil dropped like a curtain of black glass. No one in. No one out. Radio signals died. Portal signatures collapsed.

Hades stood in the main tourist clearing with an AK-57 in his hands like it was a toy. He opened fire without ceremony. Guests and park workers dropped. Blood mixed with dust.

Behind him, large industrial containers cracked open. Pale, pulsing Glimmer Wombs spilled out like living organs. They crawled—wet, purposeful—across the ground and into the mouths, eyes, and open wounds of the fallen. Bodies convulsed. Skin split. Bones lengthened into wrong shapes. Within minutes the clearing filled with mutilated, grotesque new monsters: half-human things with too many joints, glowing cores where hearts should have been, and screams that no longer sounded human.

**Group 3** hit Stripe first.

The zebra stood in a clearing of trampled grass, stripes shifting through every color the human eye could name and several it could not. Colour Factor. Every time the zebra's hide changed hue, the laws of light around it changed with it. Blinkstrike tried to teleport and found himself moving in slow motion under a red shift. Jayse the Caveman swung his tree-club and watched it turn transparent mid-swing. Brakash roared as his own strength was refracted into weakness. Pound's antique war-magic rounds curved harmlessly away under a sudden ultraviolet field. Stripe kicked, and the air itself bruised.

**Group 1** found Hades near the ranger station.

Thembinkosi was on his knees, blood running from a cut above his eye, still trying to raise his rifle. Nathan's illusions flickered under the weight of the veil. Sasha's targeting systems glitched. Vera's barrier cracked under residual cold.

Peter Shotstock did not hesitate. He charged, End Blade roaring with finality, and drove it straight into Hades's chest.

The blade shattered.

Fragments of absolute ending scattered across the dirt like broken glass. Hades looked down at the ruined weapon, then up at Peter, and laughed—a deep, genuine sound.

"The End Blade kills cosmic-level beings," Hades said, almost kindly. "I am not cosmic level, dumbass. I am universal."

His hand closed around Peter's throat. With a casual motion he hurled the scarred soldier across the clearing. Peter crashed through two trees and did not get up immediately.

**Group 2** fought through a pack of stone-hided hippos while Ofentse's blood continued to drip and spread farther than it should have, leaving dark, reluctant stains that the earth seemed to reject.

**Group 5** used concentrated light and kinetic force to carve paths through the newly born Glimmer-monsters.

**Group 6** turned the battlefield into myth and probability; Jabari's coins decided which monsters remembered how to stand.

**Group 7** met raw physical power with older, heavier power.

**Group 8** burned and judged, white-gold wings and regenerative fury against the grotesque tide.

**Group 9** held the southern edge of the veil, Damon the Hollow drinking ambient fear while RoboBot calculated kill-zones that no longer obeyed normal physics.

Above it all, Hades reloaded the AK-57 with unhurried calm, the veil sealing them inside a private apocalypse.

---

Back at Willowbrook High, the zip-ties bit into Kevin's wrists. Wyatt's shoulder pressed against his. Outside, Brihaana's laughter mixed with approaching sirens and the soft, wet sound of Xarak licking his lips.

At the Monster Tear, golden blood still steamed on the concrete.

And inside the black-glass dome over Kruger Park, the first of the Glimmer-born monsters raised its ruined head and screamed in a voice that had never been human.

The day had only begun to break.
