Chapter 89 - "When Kings and Curses Walk"(89)

**Chapter 89: "When Kings and Curses Walk"**

**Volume 5 – Exodus**

---

The cold did not leave with Hades.

It lingered in the headquarters like a second skin, clinging to metal and bone long after the ancient presence had withdrawn. Kevin still stood where he had stood, Wyatt half a step behind him, their shoulders almost touching. The Mythical Matrix under Kevin's shirt had finally quieted, but the quiet felt wrong—like a blade that had been sheathed without being cleaned.

Peter was the first to speak.

"He didn't come here to kill us," the scarred ex-soldier said, End Blade still low at his side. "He came to measure. And he measured the one thing we can't replace."

All eyes flicked, just for a second, to Wyatt.

Wyatt's voice was steady. "Then we stop giving him time to measure anything else."

Nathan Moya's phone lit up before anyone could answer. The illusionist's face tightened as he read the priority alert. Sasha leaned in. The color drained from both of them at the same time.

"Kruger National Park," Nathan said. "South Africa. Multiple high-tier signatures. Animal. All of them. And one confirmed Class-Ancient energy matching Hades."

Peter's jaw flexed. "Your brother?"

Nathan's voice dropped. "Thembinkosi is on shift tonight. Ranger station near the southern boundary."

Sasha was already moving. "Full deployment. Nine groups. No delays."

The night should have been full of ordinary sounds: distant lions, the soft crash of something large moving through brush, the endless insect chorus.

Instead the park held its breath.

Thembinkosi Moya stood on the raised wooden walkway of the ranger station, radio pressed hard to his ear. At thirty-one he had the same sharp cheekbones as Nathan, the same quiet intensity, but years of sun and dust had carved something harder into him. Behind him, the station lights flickered once.

Raaken stood at the edge of the clearing like he had always belonged there.

The curse-weaver was tall, thin, and wrong in a way the eye refused to settle on. His shadow did not match his body. When he spoke, the words seemed to arrive a half-second late.

"Your little brother still plays at hero," Raaken said. "How sweet."

Thembinkosi raised the rifle. "Leave."

Raaken smiled without showing teeth. "Hades already paid the toll."

The air above the clearing tore open with a sound like wet cloth ripping. Hades stepped through as if the night itself had decided to stand upright. The temperature plummeted. Frost raced across the wooden railings. Every insect went silent at once.

Hades looked at the vast darkness of the park the way a man looks at a table already set for him.

"Do it," he said.

Raaken lifted both hands.

The curse left his fingers like black smoke that refused to rise. It sank into the earth, into the roots, into the blood of every living thing that walked on four legs or flew or crawled. The ground shuddered. Somewhere in the dark a lion screamed—not in pain, but in sudden, furious awakening.

Then the park answered.

A herd of buffalo thundered into the clearing, eyes burning with violet fire, horns trailing ribbons of force. A leopard the size of a small car landed on the station roof, fur rippling with living shadow. From the river came a hippo whose hide had turned to living stone. Above them, a cloud of vultures wheeled in perfect formation, each one trailing red lightning.

Thembinkosi opened fire. The bullets sparked harmlessly off the stone hippo's skull.

Raaken laughed. "Welcome to the new age, ranger."

Hades simply watched, patient as winter.

**Guardians of Destiny Headquarters – Simultaneous**

The deployment order hit every communicator at once.

Nine groups. No debates.

**Group 1** – Nathan Moya, Sasha Moya, Peter Shotstock, Vera

**Group 2** – Rona, Ofentse, Derek, Zach

**Group 3** – Arthur "Blinkstrike" Muller, Jayse the Caveman, Brakash the Himalayan, Pound

**Group 5** – Lazerbeam, Rad Kade, Rafael, T. Doodle

**Group 6** – Bane, Thor, Loki, Jabari the Gambler

**Group 7** – Korg, Grug, Lovelady, Liam the Lowensmensch

**Group 8** – Lucifer Jr., Michael, Cain, Abel

**Group 9** – Damon the Hollow, Cohen Washington, Devonte Murtizy, RoboBot

Portals tore open across the headquarters. The teams vanished in staggered flashes of light and residual power.

Ofentse paused for half a second as he stepped through with Group 2. A thin line of blood ran from his left ear, darker than it should have been, and the drops that hit the floor spread farther than physics allowed. He wiped it away with the back of his hand and said nothing. Rona glanced at him once, eyes narrowing, but the portal closed before questions could form.

**Kruger National Park – 03:41 SAST**

The first Guardians hit the ground like falling stars.

Group 1 arrived closest to the ranger station. Peter's End Blade was already drawn. Nathan's illusions bloomed across the clearing—dozens of false Thembinkosis running in every direction. Sasha's interface lit up with target locks. Vera's barrier snapped into place just as the shadow-leopard lunged.

The fight became noise and light.

A buffalo charged. Brakash (Group 3) met it head-on, Himalayan strength turning the impact into a crater. Jayse the Caveman laughed like the world was young again and tore a tree free to use as a club. Pound, the WWII soldier, planted his feet and fired a weapon that should not have still existed, each round screaming with old war-magic.

Group 6 arrived in a storm of myth. Thor's hammer cracked the sky. Loki's knives found the soft places under glowing animal armor. Bane simply walked forward, and the ground died beneath his feet. Jabari the Gambler flipped a coin, caught it, and every predator in a twenty-meter radius suddenly forgot which way was forward.

Group 8 hit like judgment. Lucifer Jr.'s wings ignited white-gold. Michael's blade sang the old songs. Cain and Abel moved as one wound that refused to close, regeneration and finality braided together.

Hades watched it all with mild interest.

Then he moved.

One step. The temperature dropped so hard that breath turned to ice crystals in mid-air. A wave of absolute cold rolled outward. Lazerbeam's beams stuttered and died. RoboBot's systems screamed warnings. Even Thor's lightning slowed, as if the air itself had become reluctant to conduct.

Raaken's laugh cut through the chaos. "The animals are only the opening verse!"

A new presence arrived without portal or warning.

The air in the center of the clearing folded like paper. Light the color of old gold spilled out. A man stepped through—tall, broad-shouldered, wearing armor that looked grown rather than forged, a crown of living metal resting on dark hair. His eyes held the weight of a century that had never been allowed to end.

Sylas, King of the Golden Age. Displaced from 300 AD.

He took one look at the empowered animals, at Hades, at the Guardians tearing into the night, and his voice rolled across the park like a remembered law.

"This land was not yours to break."

Hades tilted his head. "Another antique. How crowded the present has become."

Sylas's hand closed around the hilt of a sword that had not existed a second earlier. Golden fire raced along the blade.

"Then we will uncrowd it."

**Elsewhere – An Ordinary Apartment**

Drevon the Lithgokong sat on a worn couch, long legs stretched out, eyes half-lidded. The television murmured something meaningless. The man who had been standing in the corner for the last three minutes finally stepped into the light.

He was thin, sharp-eyed, and carried the particular stillness of someone who had already solved the room.

"Sherlock Holmes," the man said. "I have been investigating a pattern of supernatural sightings that should not exist. You have been at the center of three of them."

Drevon did not stand. He simply looked up.

"My name is Drevon Xeno."

Sherlock studied him for a long moment, then extended a hand.

Drevon shook it.

The detective's eyes narrowed almost imperceptibly at the temperature of the contact, but he said nothing.

**Willowbrook High – Morning**

The halls smelled like floor wax and teenage stress. Kevin walked with his hands in his pockets, Wyatt beside him, both of them still carrying the ghost of last night's cold in their bones. Bella's feathers kept trying to push through the skin at her wrists. Bandile floated a pencil in lazy circles without looking at it. Lucifer Jr. had his hood up. Koa's beast spirits muttered under his skin.

Huxley stopped dead in the middle of the corridor.

His head tilted. His nose wrinkled. He sniffed the air like a bloodhound that had just found something it was not supposed to find.

A small Grade 7 boy stood by the lockers, backpack almost as big as he was. Ben Growe. Ordinary. Quiet. Watching the older students with wide eyes.

Ben noticed Huxley staring and offered a small, polite smile. "Hi."

Huxley's face went red. He cleared his throat, looked anywhere except at the younger boy, and muttered, "Wassup."

Kevin caught Wyatt's eye. Wyatt's mouth twitched. For half a second the weight of ancient blood and dying gods felt very far away.

Then Kevin's Matrix pulsed once—soft, warning, distant.

Somewhere in South Africa, a golden king and a lord of the dead were about to decide what the new century would cost.

Kevin exhaled.

"School first," he said quietly. "Then we go."

Wyatt nodded.

Around them the ordinary morning continued, fragile and loud and completely unaware that the park on the other side of the world had already stopped being ordinary.

**Kruger National Park – The Clearing**

Sylas's golden blade met the first wave of empowered animals in a storm of light and roaring. Hades finally stepped forward, cold rolling off him in visible waves. Raaken's curses thickened the air until even breathing felt like swallowing thorns.

The Guardians of Destiny formed up, nine groups becoming one living weapon.

Nathan's voice cut across the chaos on the open channel.

"Thembinkosi is alive. Extract and contain. Priority on the curse-weaver. Do not let Hades leave with whatever he came for."

Peter raised the End Blade.

"Then let's remind the old world why the new one still stands."

The park erupted.

And far above the blood and gold and freezing dark, the Garden Behind the Fence continued to wait—patient, silent, and no longer alone in its hunger.
