Chapter 78 - "Missiles, Returns and the Deer That Knew Too much"(78)

**Chapter 78: Missiles, Returns, and the Deer That Knew Too Much**

The headquarters became a wound in the world.

---

**Guardians of Destiny Society – Main Hall**

The Empty (in Keisha's body) and the spreading Emptiness met the full weight of everything the Guardians had left.

Cain opened with the End Blade. The weapon's finality carved a visible absence through the advancing non-colour; The Emptiness recoiled for the first time since it had arrived. Abel stayed at his brother's shoulder, regeneration already knitting a dozen small deaths out of his skin. Michael's white-gold wings turned the upper air into a killing field of light. Lucifer fought like someone who had been waiting centuries for a target large enough to justify the effort. Nathan's illusions multiplied the legion into overlapping kill-boxes. Bandile's telekinesis slammed invisible walls into the absence hard enough to make the reinforced floors scream. Dustin Krenjsi's wheelchair unfolded its paralytic blades in a silver fan; wherever the blades kissed the Emptiness, movement slowed and froze in jagged patches. Sasha directed the new legion — Kayleen, T. Doodler, Quil, Red Ribbon, Mira, Dex, Yui — with short, brutal efficiency.

God arrived in Gerald's body without ceremony.

The confrontation between God's sister and God himself did not look like a fight. It looked like two opposing definitions of the universe trying to occupy the same sentence. The Empty smiled with Keisha's mouth. God did not smile at all. Every power in the hall dimmed under the pressure of that reunion.

Then The Empty found what it had come for.

Cohen Washington — President of the United States, long-time Guardians ally, the man whose signature could still move certain old-world arsenals — was being evacuated through a side corridor. The Empty's borrowed eyes locked on him. American missiles. Delivery systems. The kind of firepower that could rewrite geography if aimed at the correct metaphysical wound.

The Empty and The Emptiness simply folded.

One moment they occupied the hall. The next they were gone, leaving only the smell of absence and a dozen injured Guardians on the cracked floor. The immediate battle ended not with victory but with a new destination: the White House.

**Aftermath – Same Hall**

Medics moved. The End Blade returned to Cain's side. The legion counted living bodies.

Derek Crosley walked in through the ruined main doors like he had only been out for cigarettes.

Electricity still curled faintly around his fingers. Torkai saw him first.

"Derek. Long time no see."

Derek's grin was wide and exhausted. "Hahaha. Missed you all."

Dustin rolled forward, paralytic blades already folding back into the chair. "Where have you been?"

"Got a fiancée," Derek said. "And a son. Derek Jr. Life got loud in a different way."

A familiar metal-edged voice cut across the hall.

"Oh, did you miss me that much?"

Zach — Ferrum — stood near the secondary entrance, back from whatever timeline had borrowed him. Derek crossed the distance in three strides and pulled him into a hard hug. Metal and electricity sparked between them like the years had never happened.

Peter Shotstock's voice rolled in from the doorway, dry as old gunpowder.

"Enough hugging. Looks like you're about to cum."

Rona, Ofentse, and Loki followed him in — alive, present, carrying the residual weight of Hell and worse. The Magnificent 18 filtered through behind them in ones and twos, the old formation instinctively closing ranks again.

Two new figures accompanied the returns.

Chimp — an actual chimpanzee in a reinforced field vest, eyes sharp with zoological intelligence and something older — signed a rapid greeting that Sebastian translated as "I am also a doctor. Try not to die stupidly." Beside him stood Wex, quiet, ordinary-looking until he opened a doorway in mid-air that led somewhere with different weather and closed it again with a flick of his fingers.

The board had grown larger in the space of a single morning.

**Willowbrook High – Same Day**

The sky above the school stayed ordinary blue. The teenagers noticed and did not trust it.

Bangu found himself near the vending machines after last period with a girl he had never spoken to before. Bella. Quiet smile. Kit bag over one shoulder like she belonged to the same Wednesday game.

"Good luck tomorrow," she said. "I'll be watching."

Bangu, for once, did not have a ready answer. He just nodded, ears slightly warm, and watched her walk away.

Elsewhere in the building Jayden Lautalo watched Takahashi Suguru move between classes and felt the same off-ness spike hard enough to taste. The way Takahashi occupied space matched the residual Oni pressure Jayden still carried under his own skin. He did not yet have the word for it. He only knew the new transfer sat in the world the same way the red-skinned club-wielder had sat on that rooftop.

**Service Corridor – After Final Bell**

Jayden, Lupin, Ri Kwon Jae, and Huxley cornered Henrik Helsing near the old science wing. The younger Helsing did not look surprised. He looked like someone who had been waiting for the conversation.

Before anyone could speak, two unusual deer stepped out of an alcove that should not have held them.

The deer shimmered, folded, and became Laker and Layla.

Huxley's super smell flared. Recognition hit him at the same time as memory.

"I know you. Jackson and Bangu mentioned you."

Laker smiled. Layla laughed, bright and unbothered by the four tense faces around them.

Henrik Helsing's reaction was simpler. He punched Laker square in the jaw, then nearly caught Layla with the follow-up.

"You damn psychos."

Laker wiped blood from his mouth and kept smiling.

"Henrik," he said, almost gentle. "You're going to be the one who kills the Beast of Gévaudan. Not the Guardians. Not the Rampager. You. Try not to die before it matters."

The corridor held the weight of that sentence while ordinary students streamed past the far end, talking about homework and Bangu's game tomorrow and the fact that the sky had finally remembered how to be blue.

**Closing Image**

At Headquarters the injured were counted, the returns were absorbed, and the knowledge that The Empty now wanted American missiles settled over the room like a second atmosphere.

At school the teenagers moved through the last hours of an ordinary day that no longer felt ordinary: Bangu carrying Bella's quiet good luck, Jayden carrying the growing certainty that Takahashi was not only a transfer student, Henrik carrying a prophecy he had not asked for, and the rest of them — Kevin, Wyatt, Zayelle, Amon, Carlton, Amadou, Lucifer Jr., Koa, and every other powered teenager under the newly blue sky — carrying the private knowledge that the war had not ended when the red light faded.

It had only changed destinations.

The White House was next.

The Beast still needed killing.

And the End Blade remained quiet at Cain's side, waiting for the moment it would finally be asked to finish something that should never have been allowed to begin.
