Chapter 76 - "Everything That Should Not Fit on The Same Page"(76)

**Chapter 76: Everything That Should Not Fit on the Same Page**

The blood sky developed a sense of humour.

It was not a kind one.

**Rooftop District – Redfern Ridge**

Jayden Lautalo stood between an Oni and a Sphinx and felt the night split into three versions of himself.

The Oni face he had already worn still hung in the air like leftover heat. The Sphinx — Sally Dogder, half-recovered, lion-bodied, human-eyed — watched him with the patience of something that solved riddles by waiting for the other person to lie. And underneath Jayden's own skin, El Pombero (the small, dark, forest-born trickster who had never asked permission to share the body) started laughing in a register Jayden could not quite hear.

Jayden scratched the back of his neck.

"Okay," he said to the rooftop. "Which one of us is the bit and which one is the punchline?"

The Sphinx tilted her head. The residual Oni shape flickered. El Pombero, still unnamed inside him, rearranged a nearby satellite dish with pure mischief and made it point at the blood sky like an accusation. Jayden blamed the wind.

**Guardians Archives – Sub-Level**

Van Helsing turned a page that had been written in three different centuries and one language that no longer existed. Henrik Helsing stood beside him, projecting live heat-maps of Jarron's last known movements across a floating screen.

"The concept is migrating toward the old industrial aquifers," Henrik said. "It likes places where people already decided nothing good happens."

Van Helsing closed the book with a sound like a gavel. "Then we meet it there. Bring the silver that remembers 1767. And tell Cain the End Blade is not a conversation piece."

**The Thin Place Between**

Mortalis walked upward with two souls in tow.

Zayelle's soul still carried the pale after-image of the death-shape; she looked at her own hands like they belonged to someone who had borrowed them too long. Faar No Besa's soul grew small green shoots out of the non-air with every step, stubborn and quiet. Neither spoke. Mortalis did not encourage conversation. Its job was logistics, not therapy.

Above them the blood sky flickered once, as if something had been returned to a board that had already declared them deleted.

**Flooded Industrial Sub-Level**

Dracula (the White Vampire) stood in ankle-deep water and listened to the building settle. Ri Kwon Jae kept his breathing shallow. Lupin's stance stayed low and ready. Across the chamber Carlton (Cryogenesis) let frost climb the walls in slow, deliberate patterns while Amadou (Meteor Boy) hovered a few centimetres above the water, residual re-entry heat making the surface hiss.

Five different kinds of power occupied the same flooded room and tried to decide whether the others counted as allies or delayed problems.

Amadou broke the silence.

"The Beast left a wound in the air. Not a scent. A wound. It will come back to lick it."

Dracula's crimson eyes reflected the red light leaking through the cracked ceiling. "Then we are standing in the wound. How fortunate."

Carlton's frost reached the far wall and stopped. The temperature in the chamber became a held threat.

**Guardians Headquarters – Layered Chaos**

Cain sat on the edge of the central table with the End Blade resting across his knees. Abel stood beside him, arms folded, regenerating a paper cut he had gotten from an old map out of pure spite. Lucifer watched the blade the way a collector watches a rare weapon he is not entirely sure he wants to fire. Michael's wings stayed half-open, light bleeding into the air. Lucifer Jr. and Koa occupied the opposite side of the table; the True Beast spirits under Koa's skin kept trying to decide whether Cain smelled like predator or history.

Nathan and Sasha entered with a fresh legion update. Kayleen, T. Doodler, Fredricks, Quil, Red Ribbon and the others were already running containment drills designed for a target that had no reliable shape. Nathan looked at the End Blade, then at Cain, then at the blood sky visible through the high windows.

"We have a weapon that can finish The Empty," Nathan said. "We also have a concept of evil, a body jumper, a newly complicated Argentine teenager, two resurrected souls in transit, and God walking around in a borrowed Christian. Please tell me the next sentence is simple."

Abel smiled without warmth. "There are no simple sentences left."

**Medical Wing & Outer Corridors**

Kevin sat on the edge of a cot while the Mythical Matrix remained unnaturally quiet under his skin, as if it were listening for instructions from a higher altitude. Wyatt occupied the chair beside him, turning a scavenged grenade pin over between his fingers and replaying the rail yard on an endless loop. Neither of them said Zayelle's name. Both of them were thinking it hard enough to taste.

Elsewhere in the building Korg floated in slow anxious circles around Erik Stormjuger. The lion-headed teenager flexed his hands and tried to get used to the idea that doors could open for him instead of only close. Grug had finally returned from the deep lab; the Revenant stood in the doorway of the command floor and simply said, "The planter of the seeds has a name. I am still deciding whether to speak it."

Jordan Pitas's metal feet rang against the outer perimeter walkway. Rodriguez Hernandez walked beside him in perfect visibility for once, talking fast about aquifer maps and the way the Beast's heat signature kept skipping like a bad recording. The Cyborg Policeman's red optic stayed fixed on the darkest part of the skyline.

Benjamin Fabisch remained on the steps of Willowbrook High, hands folded, carrying the telepathic aftertaste of a warning that had already come true. He watched the blood sky and waited to see whether the next brutal ending would announce itself early.

Bandile Hardere moved alone through the industrial grid, telekinetic pressure rolling ahead of him like a storm front that had decided to walk. He had not finished his conversation with Jarron. He intended to resume it at the earliest opportunity.

**Rooftop – Final Turn of the Hour**

Jayden (who still did not know the name El Pombero belonged to him) watched the Oni shape and the Sphinx shape regard each other across ten metres of open roof. The mischievous pressure behind his eyes grew stronger. A discarded cigarette packet stood up on its own, did a small dance, and collapsed again. Jayden blamed the wind a second time.

Sally's Sphinx eyes narrowed.

The residual Oni face grinned.

Somewhere above the blood sky, God (in Gerald's body) and The Empty (in Keisha's body) continued their slow, inevitable approach toward one another.

And in the thin place between, Mortalis kept walking upward with two souls who had not expected to need feet again.

The blood sky looked down at the entire overlapping mess — hunters and legends and monsters and teenagers and first murderers and borrowed bodies — and for one brief, bizarre moment the red light seemed to flicker in something that might have been exasperated amusement.

Everything that should not fit on the same page was on the same page.

The page kept turning anyway.
