Chapter 74 - "The End Blade"(74)

**Chapter 74: The End Blade**

The blood sky had started to feel like a countdown.

---

**Somewhere Beneath the Oldest Stone**

Cain walked first. Abel followed three steps behind, the way he had for longer than maps had existed. The corridor they moved through was not on any Guardians schematic. It predated the concept of schematics. The walls were the colour of forgotten decisions.

At the end of the corridor sat a simple stone plinth.

On the plinth lay a blade that refused to reflect light.

It was not black. It was not white. It was the colour of a sentence that had already been finished. The air around it did not move. Even the blood sky's pressure stopped at the edge of the plinth, unwilling to touch what rested there.

Cain stopped.

"The End Blade," he said. His voice carried none of its usual dry amusement. "The only edge that can unmake The Empty. Not wound. Not banish. Unmake."

Abel stared at the weapon for a long time.

"It will not choose us easily," he said.

Cain reached out. The moment his fingers closed around the hilt the entire corridor shuddered. Something very old and very final recognised the first murderer and allowed the grip. Abel placed his hand over his brother's. Regeneration and immortality accepted the same burden together.

When they turned back toward the surface, the End Blade went with them — quiet, absolute, and heavier than any object had the right to be.

**Rail Yards – Redfern Ridge**

Bandile Hardere was still standing.

The Beast of Gévaudan — Jarron, the living concept of evil — circled him under the red light, black fur matted with the residue of failed kills. Telekinetic force had turned the yard into a sculpture of crushed metal and broken concrete. Bandile's nose was bleeding. One eye was swelling shut. He had not taken a single step backward.

Jarron smiled with too many teeth.

"You are interesting," the concept said in a voice made of every cruel thought that had ever finished a life. "Most things break."

Bandile wiped blood from his mouth with the back of his hand.

"Come and find out if I do."

The two of them collided again.

**Guardians Headquarters – Multiple Wings**

Nathan and Sasha stood over the expanding legion roster. Kayleen, T. Doodler, Fredricks, Quil, Red Ribbon, Mira, Dex, and Yui were already being briefed on containment formations designed for something that had no form. More candidates waited in the hall.

In the medical wing Sally remained unconscious while Sebastian kept a low crystal perimeter around her bed. Cryogenesis — Carlton — stood at the foot of the bed in human shape, pale blue eyes unreadable, frost beginning to form on the inside of the windows without his permission.

Korg floated near Erik Stormjuger in a quiet side room. The lion-headed teenager flexed his hands and tried to remember what freedom was supposed to feel like. Grug had still not returned from the lab; the residual signatures of the seed planter continued to occupy him.

Ignis and Lancelot received the first encrypted packet from Khalid Ali: a short list of possible locations for Jennifer the body jumper's original body. The Transportal was already being recalibrated.

Jordan Pitas and Rodriguez Hernandez moved through the outer districts of Willowbrook, metal limbs and invisibility sweeping for any new sign of Jarron's path. The Cyborg Policeman's red optic stayed locked on every heat signature that felt wrong.

Benjamin Fabisch sat alone on the steps of Willowbrook High, hands folded, staring at the place where the blood sky was darkest. The telepathic after-image of Keisha's brutal ending still lived behind his eyes. He had been right. He took no comfort in it.

**High Chamber – Headquarters**

Lucifer, Michael, Lucifer Jr., and Koa turned as Cain and Abel entered. The End Blade rode at Cain's side like a held breath.

Lucifer's gaze went to the weapon first.

"You actually found it."

Cain's mouth twitched. "You sound surprised."

"I sound hopeful," Lucifer corrected. "Which is worse."

Michael stepped closer, light bleeding faintly from his wings. "The Empty will feel that blade the moment it is drawn in the open. There will be no second chance."

Abel's voice was quiet. "Then we do not miss."

Lucifer Jr. studied the brothers, then his father and uncle. The complicated geometry of family, betrayal, and survival hung between all five of them like a sixth presence.

Koa simply nodded once, True Beast spirits stirring under his skin in recognition of something final.

**Elsewhere in the City**

God (in Gerald's body) walked the empty avenues with unhurried steps. The blood sky parted slightly above him, not in reverence but in acknowledgment. He was going to meet The Empty. The conversation that had been postponed since the first light was finally due.

The Oni that wore Jayden Lautalo's face and the recovering Sphinx form of Sally Dogder watched each other across a different rooftop. Neither had attacked yet. Both understood that the board had grown larger than their private rivalry.

Tobias and Gabriel Morningstar regrouped in the skeleton of a burnt warehouse, black fire and Celestial light flickering in uneasy truce. The Hellhound still tasted Zayelle's final moment on his teeth. Gabriel said nothing about it.

**Rail Yards – Final Image of the Hour**

Bandile's telekinesis met Jarron's next charge and held — barely. The living concept of evil pressed harder. Somewhere behind the red light, The Empty (in Keisha's body) turned its borrowed face toward the place where the End Blade had been claimed, as if it had felt the weight of its own possible ending for the first time.

Kevin and Wyatt, extracted and bleeding in a medical bay, watched the satellite feeds in silence. The Matrix under Kevin's skin stayed unnaturally quiet, waiting.

Cain and Abel walked out of the oldest dark with the only weapon that could finish what had been started when the gate opened.

The blood sky recorded the moment the End Blade returned to the world.

And for the first time since the red light appeared, something in the sky flinched.
