The great rings of the Seventh Observatory continued turning.
One by one, ancient systems that had slept for centuries returned to life.
But the restoration did not make Skyreach safe.
It made the old dangers visible.
Beyond the central observatory, a chain of floating platforms extended toward the highest peak.
At the end of that route stood the broken Stars Observatory.
Its towers were dark.
Its bridges were incomplete.
And several enormous astronomical rings hung at impossible angles above the clouds.
That was where the Bronze Plate resonance was coming from.
Vael-Sha stood beside the restored star map.
"The relic is somewhere inside that observatory."
Dorion looked across the distance.
"And the route?"
Vael-Sha pointed toward the broken platforms.
"That is the route."
Bardin stared.
"There are three bridges missing."
"Four," Lirion corrected.
Everyone looked at him.
Lirion pointed upward.
"The fourth bridge is floating."
Bardin squinted.
"I don't see it."
"Exactly."
Dorion unfolded his Sky Mantle.
"Then let's find it."
THE FIRST CROSSING
The five stepped onto the first platform.
Immediately, the Sky Mantles reacted.
The fabric lifted in the mountain wind.
Their copies were less responsive than Dorion's original mantle, but Lirion had modified each one for controlled gliding.
He checked their resonance.
"Stay within visual distance."
Valek nodded.
"And if the wind changes?"
"Don't fight it."
Bardin smiled.
"The Trial of the Clouds taught us that."
Lirion looked toward the distant observatory.
"This isn't the trial anymore."
A deep mechanical sound echoed through the mountains.
KRRRROOOOM.
The floating platforms shifted.
The path changed.
Dorion frowned.
"Then what is it?"
Lirion watched the ancient mechanisms.
"A machine that's still trying to remember where the road was."
The first platform moved sideways.
The second dropped.
The third rotated.
Suddenly, there was no direct route.
Sorion looked at his compass.
The needle moved.
Not toward the observatory.
Toward the sky.
He understood.
"The path isn't fixed."
Bardin opened his notebook.
"The old song described this."
He read the line carefully.
"When the stars fall from their places, follow the space between them."
Valek looked at the floating platforms.
"So we don't follow the platforms."
Sorion nodded.
"We follow the gaps."
Dorion smiled.
"Finally."
He jumped.
THE FALLING STARS
Dorion's Sky Mantle opened.
He caught the rising current.
Instead of heading toward the nearest platform, he turned toward an empty section of sky.
For a moment, nothing happened.
Then an invisible field activated.
A faint outline of an ancient bridge appeared.
Dorion landed on it.
"Found it!"
The others followed.
Valek glided across.
Sorion moved through the Veil, using short bursts to correct his position.
Lirion adjusted his mantle while airborne.
Bardin followed last.
Halfway across—
the bridge disappeared.
Bardin dropped.
"NOT AGAIN!"
Valek immediately turned.
Sorion released a Veil tether.
The shadow caught Bardin's mantle.
Lirion redirected the Technomagik current.
Dorion extended his hand.
Bardin grabbed it.
The five landed together.
Bardin breathed heavily.
"That bridge has terrible manners."
Dorion laughed.
Lirion looked behind them.
The invisible bridge had disappeared completely.
"We can't use it again."
Sorion looked ahead.
"Then we keep moving."
THE WILD SKY RAIDERS
A sharp cry came from above.
Everyone looked upward.
Three large flying creatures descended from the clouds.
They were different from the Cloud Razors.
These were broad-winged predators with long crystalline beaks and metallic spines running down their backs.
One carried a broken piece of ancient machinery embedded in its body.
Lirion scanned them.
"Wild Sky Hunters."
Valek drew his weapon.
"Hostile?"
The largest creature screamed.
It dove.
"Yes."
Dorion launched himself upward.
His Sky Mantle opened.
The creature's claws struck his armor.
CLANG!
Dorion grabbed one of its legs.
The creature twisted violently.
Dorion was dragged through the air.
He released his grip before being pulled into the clouds.
Valek attacked the second creature.
Solar energy flashed.
The creature avoided the blade.
Sorion disappeared.
The third creature suddenly felt something behind it.
Sorion appeared.
His Veil Dual Dagger struck its metallic spine.
Not deeply.
Just enough.
The creature lost balance.
Lirion activated a small Technomagik device.
A controlled pulse struck the creature.
Its wings stabilized.
"It isn't trying to kill us," Lirion shouted.
Dorion landed.
"What?"
"The creatures are protecting their nesting territory."
He pointed toward the broken observatory.
"They're nesting inside the tower."
Bardin lowered his weapon.
"So we're the intruders."
Valek looked at the creatures.
"Then we drive them away without killing them."
The five changed tactics.
Dorion drew their attention.
Valek used controlled Solar bursts to force them away from the platforms.
Sorion disrupted their attack patterns.
Lirion created a Technomagik decoy.
Bardin played a sharp sequence from the Skyreach song.
The creatures suddenly turned toward the sound.
They followed the melody away from the route.
The largest creature gave one final cry.
Then disappeared into the clouds.
Bardin lowered his lute.
"That was easier than fighting."
Dorion smiled.
"Sometimes."
THE BROKEN OBSERVATORY
They finally reached the outer platform of the Broken Stars Observatory.
The structure was enormous.
Its central dome had collapsed.
Three astronomical towers leaned against one another.
Ancient cables stretched across the gaps.
The main entrance was buried beneath fallen machinery.
Lirion approached the debris.
"This place suffered catastrophic structural failure."
Dorion looked at the wreckage.
"Can we enter?"
Lirion examined the machinery.
"Not from here."
He pointed upward.
"There."
A narrow maintenance route ran along the side of the tower.
Sorion looked at it.
"That's barely a path."
Lirion nodded.
"It wasn't designed for people."
Dorion looked at his mantle.
"Then we'll fly."
THE MANTLES OF THE FIVE
They jumped together.
Five Sky Mantles opened against the mountain wind.
Dorion led.
His original mantle responded immediately.
Valek followed closely.
Sorion moved between them.
Lirion maintained his position using calculated adjustments.
Bardin struggled against a crosswind.
"Why does mine always do this?"
Lirion shouted:
"Because you're pulling the wrong angle!"
Bardin corrected his mantle.
The wind caught him.
He shot upward.
"Ah!"
Dorion looked back.
"That's better!"
Bardin laughed.
For several moments, all five traveled through the clouds.
The mountain opened beneath them.
The world became enormous.
Snow-covered peaks stood on distant horizons.
Clouds flowed between the valleys.
Sunlight reflected from the Observatory's metallic towers.
Then—
the wind dropped.
All five began falling.
"Fold the mantles!"
Lirion shouted.
They folded their cloaks.
Then opened them again at the correct angle.
The falling became a glide.
They landed on the upper maintenance platform.
Bardin sat down.
"I am beginning to understand why ancient warriors wore capes."
Dorion looked at his mantle.
"They probably weren't supposed to use them like this."
Lirion smiled.
"They were."
THE MACHINE THAT WATCHED THE SKY
Inside the upper tower, they discovered a massive astronomical machine.
Its central lens was broken.
Its rotating rings had stopped.
Lirion approached.
"This controls the Observatory's star alignment."
Sorion looked at the compass.
The needle pointed directly toward the machine.
"The relic is connected to it."
Lirion studied the system.
"Then we need to restore it."
The repair took hours.
Lirion replaced broken conduits.
He redirected power from unused systems.
He repaired several ancient control nodes.
The machine slowly awakened.
THUM.
One ring turned.
THUM.
Another.
Then the central lens opened.
A beam of light shot into the sky.
The clouds parted.
Stars appeared even though it was still daytime.
Bardin stared upward.
"Beautiful."
The stars formed a pattern.
A constellation.
Then another.
Sorion's compass responded.
A hidden location appeared.
Deep beneath the Observatory.
Lirion looked at the projection.
"There's another chamber."
Dorion smiled.
"Then that's where we're going."
THE SEVEN STAR PUZZLE
The route downward was blocked by seven circular mechanisms.
Each represented one of the Observatory's seven stars.
The symbols constantly changed position.
Bardin examined them.
"The pattern is musical."
Lirion looked at him.
"Of course it is."
Bardin played a sequence.
One symbol illuminated.
Valek added a vocal harmony.
Another illuminated.
Sorion released a small Veil resonance.
A third appeared.
Dorion frowned.
"What do I do?"
Bardin looked at him.
"Wait."
Dorion sighed.
The puzzle continued.
Music.
Voice.
Shadow.
Then finally—
strength.
Dorion struck the central plate with his weapon.
BOOM!
The seven symbols aligned.
The floor opened.
A staircase appeared.
Bardin smiled.
"So even you had a part."
Dorion nodded.
"Best part."
THE CHAMBER BELOW
They descended.
The temperature dropped.
The walls became older.
Much older.
The architecture changed from observatory design to something more primitive.
A civilization before the great Orinthal expansion.
Lirion's scanner struggled.
"These systems are ancient."
Sorion touched the wall.
A memory awakened.
They were hiding it inside the chamber.
But they weren't afraid of thieves.
They were afraid of something else.
A voice spoke within the memory.
"The Bronze Plate must not become a weapon of conquest."
Another answered:
"Then scatter it."
The memory ended.
Sorion opened his eyes.
"They deliberately scattered the armor."
Dorion looked at him.
"Why?"
Sorion looked toward the chamber ahead.
"To prevent one person from possessing all of it."
They continued.
THE GUARDIAN OF THE BROKEN STARS
The final door opened.
A machine stood inside.
It was not enormous.
It was humanoid.
Ancient armor covered its body.
Its face was hidden behind a smooth astronomical mask.
It activated.
KRRRRM.
A weapon formed in its hand.
Dorion stepped forward.
The machine spoke.
"STATE YOUR PURPOSE."
Dorion answered:
"We seek the Bronze Plate."
"FOR POWER?"
"No."
"FOR WAR?"
"No."
The machine turned toward Sorion.
"THEN PROVE IT."
Its weapon activated.
Dorion raised his own.
The guardian attacked.
The duel began.
Dorion blocked the first strike.
CLANG!
The guardian was stronger than expected.
Dorion was pushed backward.
Valek moved forward.
The guardian stopped him.
"ONE."
Sorion understood.
"This is my test."
Dorion stepped aside.
Sorion entered the circle.
The Guardian attacked.
Fast.
Precise.
Sorion avoided the first strike.
Second.
Third.
Then countered.
Their weapons crossed.
The guardian changed tactics.
Sorion adapted.
The duel became a contest of timing.
No wasted movement.
No unnecessary attacks.
Finally, Sorion could have struck the guardian's exposed core.
He stopped.
The machine lowered its weapon.
"PURPOSE ACCEPTED."
The Guardian stepped aside.
A hidden chamber opened.
Inside—
The entire Observatory awakened.
Above them, the astronomical rings began turning.
The Broken Stars were no longer broken.
The lights of Skyreach spread across the mountains.
One by one, distant observatory towers answered.
The Seven Observatory network was beginning to reconnect.
Vael-Sha's voice came through the ancient communication system.
"You have awakened another star."
Sorion looked toward the ceiling.
The compass continued projecting the world's map.
Several Bronze Plate resonances remained scattered across distant regions.
But one route had become brighter than the others.
Far beyond the mountains.
Toward another forgotten land.
Dorion looked at the projection.
"Where next?"
Sorion watched the compass.
"Not yet."
He looked around the restored Observatory.
"We still have more to discover here."
Lirion nodded.
"The machines are only beginning to wake."
Bardin smiled.
"And I suspect every one of them has a song."
Valek looked toward the open sky.
"Then our journey continues."
Above them, the five Sky Mantles moved gently in the wind.
They had become more than clothing.
They were their means of crossing the impossible heights of Skyreach.
Their journey through the clouds had only begun.
And the Observatory—
after centuries of silence—
was finally opening its eyes.
