The great doors of the Seventh Observatory opened above the clouds.
The five travelers stepped inside.
For the first time, they were not looking at the ruins of an ancient civilization.
They were walking through a place where that civilization had survived.
Technomagisters moved between enormous machines.
Observators watched the skies through rotating lenses.
Engineers repaired ancient instruments beside modern Technomagik components.
Children carried small mechanical devices between workshops while elders studied star charts.
Yet above all of them hung the same question.
Why had the Bronze Plate relic been hidden here?
Sorion's compass answered with a faint bronze glow.
The needle pointed deeper into the Observatory.
Vael-Sha watched them from the entrance.
"You have crossed the Trial of the Clouds."
He looked at their Sky Mantles.
"But reaching Skyreach was only the first test."
Dorion tightened the clasp of his mantle.
"Then show us the next."
Vael-Sha smiled.
"Walk."
THE OBSERVATORY ABOVE THE CLOUDS
The first chamber was enormous.
A circular platform floated over a bottomless shaft.
Seven astronomical rings rotated around a central crystal.
Several were completely inactive.
Others moved irregularly, producing violent bursts of energy.
Lirion approached the control system.
"The Observatory is damaged."
Vael-Sha nodded.
"Much of Skyreach survived the Omnission."
"Much did not."
Lirion placed his hand against the machine.
Ancient symbols appeared.
He listened.
The machine language came through his interface as fragmented commands.
PRIMARY OBSERVATION ARRAY — OFFLINE.
ATMOSPHERIC STABILIZER — DAMAGED.
NAVIGATION ARRAY — 31%.
MEMORY ARCHIVE — SEALED.
Lirion frowned.
"The Observatory can't fully operate."
"Can you repair it?"
"Not completely."
He examined the mechanisms.
"But I can make it functional."
Dorion smiled.
"That's usually how you start."
Lirion began working.
The ancient machine responded to every adjustment.
He replaced a damaged Technomagik conduit.
Reconfigured a power regulator.
Connected a modern energy cell to an ancient circuit.
Then—
THOOM.
The first astronomical ring began turning.
A second followed.
The central crystal brightened.
Across the Observatory, lights awakened.
The community of Technomagisters stopped to watch.
One elderly engineer whispered:
"It is moving again."
Lirion looked toward them.
"Don't celebrate yet."
Another mechanism exploded.
BOOM!
Smoke filled the chamber.
Lirion stared at it.
"...Now you can celebrate later."
THE BROKEN OBSERVATORY
Vael-Sha led them toward the upper levels.
The Seventh Observatory was much larger than they had expected.
It was not a single tower.
It was an entire network of suspended platforms, research chambers, gardens, workshops, observatories, bridges, and ancient laboratories connected through the mountains.
But many sections were broken.
One observation tower had collapsed sideways.
Another floated without its lower stabilizers.
A research platform had been abandoned in the middle of the clouds.
The community survived by maintaining only the sections they could reach.
Vael-Sha stopped before a damaged bridge.
"This was once the eastern observation route."
Dorion looked across the gap.
"There isn't much bridge left."
"No."
Bardin looked down.
"There is considerably less bridge than I would prefer."
Vael-Sha looked at the five travelers.
"The Observatory cannot be fully restored without reconnecting these sections."
Dorion looked at his Sky Mantle.
"Then we reconnect them."
THE FIRST FLIGHT
The travelers stepped onto the remaining bridge.
Their Sky Mantles responded to the atmospheric resonance.
Dorion jumped first.
The mantle opened.
He crossed the first gap.
Valek followed.
His mantle caught a rising current and carried him toward a floating platform.
Sorion moved between the broken sections with precise bursts of Veil-assisted movement.
Lirion adjusted the resonance of his mantle while flying.
Bardin struggled.
The wind caught him from the side.
"Not again!"
Dorion reached back.
Bardin grabbed his arm.
Together they landed.
Bardin looked at the clouds beneath them.
"I believe my relationship with the sky has become personal."
They reached the other side.
Lirion found the bridge's broken power node.
He repaired it.
The ancient structure suddenly extended.
KRRRMMMM.
Stone and metal sections unfolded across the gap.
A new route connected the Observatory.
The Technomagisters below cheered.
Vael-Sha watched silently.
The questors had repaired their first piece of Skyreach.
But the compass had begun pointing elsewhere.
THE WILD SKY
A warning horn suddenly sounded.
WOOOOOOOONNNNG!
The Observatory community looked toward the clouds.
Several flying creatures emerged from the mist.
They were larger than the Cloud Razors they had encountered earlier.
Their bodies were organic, but ancient Technomagik components were embedded into their wings and skulls.
Some had crystalline horns.
Others carried metallic tails.
They had entered the Observatory's airspace.
Not as an army.
Not because they were commanded.
They were simply wild.
Hungry.
Territorial.
One creature dove toward the lower platforms.
Another struck an observation tower.
KRAAASH!
A Technomagister shouted.
"Protect the people!"
Dorion opened his Sky Mantle.
"Now!"
The five moved.
Valek launched into the air.
His Solar resonance flashed across his weapon.
He struck a creature's wing without killing it, forcing it away from the settlement.
Sorion disappeared into the clouds.
A second creature suddenly changed direction.
Sorion appeared beside it.
His Veil disrupted its balance.
The creature spun away.
Lirion directed several Observatory defense drones toward the remaining creatures.
"Don't destroy them!"
A Technomagister looked at him.
"Why?"
"They're part of this ecosystem!"
The drones changed their attack pattern.
Instead of firing destructive weapons, they created resonance barriers.
The creatures were redirected toward the open sky.
Bardin played his lute.
The melody resembled the song of the Cloud Razors.
The creatures recognized it.
The remaining beasts turned.
Then disappeared into the clouds.
The Observatory became quiet again.
Dorion landed.
"That's the last of them."
Vael-Sha shook his head.
"No."
He looked toward the horizon.
"That was only what reached us."
The travelers looked at the enormous sky.
Hundreds of distant silhouettes moved between the mountains.
The wild creatures had made the Cloudspine their home.
And Skyreach was built in the middle of their territory.
THE DUEL OF PURPOSE
When the danger passed, Vael-Sha led them toward a circular platform.
A group of Technomagisters and Observators had gathered.
One warrior stepped forward.
He wore an old Skyreach mantle reinforced with metallic plates.
His name was Kael-Vor, Guardian of the Observatory's inner archive.
He looked at the five travelers.
"You seek the Bronze Plate."
Sorion nodded.
"Yes."
Kael-Vor looked at Vael-Sha.
"And you would let strangers enter our archive?"
Vael-Sha answered:
"They survived the Trial of the Clouds."
"That proves they can travel."
Kael-Vor looked toward Sorion.
"It does not prove they understand the weight of what they seek."
Dorion stepped forward.
"Then test us."
Kael-Vor drew his weapon.
"A duel."
Valek looked at Dorion.
"All of us?"
"No."
Kael-Vor shook his head.
"One."
His eyes settled on Sorion.
"The one who carries the compass."
Sorion stepped forward.
The others moved back.
The duel began.
Kael-Vor attacked with controlled precision.
Sorion avoided the first strike.
Then the second.
Then the third.
The Guardian's movements were not wild.
They were trained for fighting inside narrow observation platforms.
Sorion recognized the technique.
Defensive.
Economical.
Patient.
Kael-Vor suddenly changed direction.
Sorion countered.
Their weapons crossed.
CLANG!
The Guardian pushed forward.
Sorion disappeared.
Kael-Vor turned before he reappeared.
Their blades collided again.
The duel became a contest of timing.
Light from the Observatory reflected from Kael-Vor's weapon.
Shadow moved around Sorion.
Finally, Sorion stopped.
He lowered his dagger.
Kael-Vor raised his weapon.
Neither had been defeated.
Kael-Vor smiled.
"Enough."
Sorion nodded.
Kael-Vor lowered his weapon.
"You could have struck me."
"So could you."
"Yes."
The Guardian turned toward the gathered Observators.
"He seeks the relic."
He looked at Sorion.
"But he is not seeking it for power."
Sorion answered quietly:
"We need to understand what happened to our world."
Kael-Vor nodded.
"Then continue."
The path into the inner Observatory opened.
THE MACHINE THAT COULD NOT SEE
The next section contained a massive astronomical instrument.
Its main lens was cracked.
Its internal mechanisms were frozen.
Vael-Sha explained:
"This machine once observed events across the Orinthal territories."
Lirion approached.
"Not just stars."
"No."
"History."
Lirion examined the machine.
"Then this is an information system."
He began repairing it.
The lens was too damaged to restore.
So Lirion created a replacement using modern Technomagik crystal.
The Technomagisters watched carefully.
One whispered:
"He is reproducing ancient architecture."
Another replied:
"No."
"He is teaching old architecture to accept new technology."
The machine activated.
The lens turned toward the horizon.
A projection appeared.
Ancient cities.
Ancient roads.
Ancient settlements.
Then—
a bronze symbol appeared.
Sorion's compass reacted.
The image moved toward another location.
A chamber deep beneath the Observatory.
Lirion stared.
"There."
Sorion looked at the projection.
"The relic."
The machine displayed a route.
But the route was incomplete.
Several sections had been erased.
Bardin stepped closer.
"There's music written underneath."
He recognized the notation.
"The path is encoded."
Vael-Sha nodded.
"Skyreach did not trust maps alone."
Bardin smiled.
"Of course it didn't."
THE BROKEN VEIL GATE
The encoded route led them beneath the Observatory.
The deeper they went, the older the architecture became.
Finally, they reached a circular chamber.
At its center stood a familiar structure.
A Veil Gate.
But this one was broken.
Its outer ring had cracked.
Several resonance channels were missing.
The central core was completely dark.
Sorion approached.
His compass reacted violently.
THUM.
The gate answered.
Then died.
Lirion immediately examined it.
"The core has been removed."
Vael-Sha nodded.
"Long ago."
"Can it be repaired?"
"No."
Lirion inspected the empty chamber.
"Not without replacing the core."
Vael-Sha looked at him.
"That core was permanently removed."
Sorion looked at the inactive gate.
"Where did it lead?"
Vael-Sha remained silent for a moment.
Then answered:
"That is what we are trying to remember."
Bardin looked at the musical inscription around the gate.
A melody had been carved into the metal.
He recognized only part of it.
"This is another clue."
Sorion's compass illuminated.
The bronze rings rotated.
A faint projection appeared.
A distant location.
A hidden chamber.
Then the image disappeared.
Lirion looked at the broken gate.
"The gate isn't the route."
Sorion understood.
"It's the memory of the route."
THE PATH TO THE RELIC
The five travelers returned to the main Observatory.
The repaired astronomical system was now functioning.
The floating bridges were reconnecting.
The Technomagisters had begun repairing their ancient machines.
The community had become part of the quest.
Vael-Sha stood before the central star map.
"You came searching for a relic."
He pointed toward the illuminated coordinates.
"But Skyreach has given you something more important."
Dorion looked at the restored Observatory.
"A working road?"
Lirion shook his head.
"Information."
Bardin smiled.
"And a song."
Valek looked at the map.
"What lies at the coordinates?"
Vael-Sha answered:
"An observation chamber that was sealed before the Omnission."
Sorion's compass pointed toward it.
The Bronze Plate resonance was unmistakable.
The relic was there.
But between them and the chamber stood another section of Skyreach.
A region marked:
UNSTABLE.
Lirion studied the designation.
"The machines there are failing."
Dorion tightened his grip.
"Then we'll repair them."
Valek looked toward the clouds.
"And if something attacks?"
Sorion drew his Veil Dual Daggers.
"Then we'll deal with it."
Bardin lifted his lute.
"And if the road disappears?"
He smiled.
"We'll listen."
Vael-Sha watched them.
For the first time, his expression showed genuine approval.
"Then the Seventh Observatory accepts your quest."
The enormous astronomical rings turned above them.
The Sky Mantles responded.
One by one, their ancient resonance awakened.
The five travelers looked toward the next floating platform.
Beyond it waited broken bridges.
Wild creatures.
Damaged machines.
Ancient puzzles.
And somewhere at the end of the route—
the hidden Bronze Plate relic.
The adventure in the clouds had truly begun.
