Chapter 34 - Chapter 34: When it Starts to feel like it matters

It didn't feel distant anymore.

That was the difference.

Before, even when I stayed, even when I stopped thinking about leaving, there was still something in me that held back. Like I was watching everything from a step away, like none of it could fully reach me.

Now… it did.

And I didn't know when that changed.

"You're quiet."

I glanced at Kairo. "You say that like I'm supposed to respond every time."

"You usually do."

"Maybe I'm getting used to ignoring you."

"You're not."

I almost smiled at that, but I didn't say anything. Silence followed, but it didn't feel awkward. It didn't feel like something waiting to break. It just stayed, calm and steady.

"You're different," he said.

"You've said that before."

"And it's still true."

I let out a quiet breath. "Then say something new."

"You stopped keeping your distance."

I frowned slightly. "That's not new."

"It is."

"No, it's just something you noticed late."

"I noticed it when it mattered."

That made me pause.

"Everything matters to you," I said.

"Yes."

"That's not normal."

"It is here."

I shook my head slightly, but I didn't argue. There wasn't much point anymore.

"You're not avoiding me," he added.

"I told you, I wasn't."

"You were."

"…Maybe," I admitted. "But I'm not now."

"That's the difference."

Silence settled again, but it didn't feel empty. It felt like something already understood.

"You're not uncomfortable anymore," Kairo said.

"I didn't say that."

"You didn't need to."

I glanced at him. "You really like speaking for me."

"I don't need to. You already said it."

"I didn't."

"You did."

I exhaled softly. "You're impossible."

"And you're still here."

That again.

Always that.

But now, it didn't feel like pressure.

It felt like a fact.

"I am," I said quietly.

"And you're not leaving."

"No."

The word came easily.

Too easily.

Silence followed, but it didn't feel heavy. It felt settled.

"You're still thinking about him," Kairo said.

I didn't deny it. "Not in a way that matters."

"That will fade."

"I know."

"But you're not holding onto it."

"I'm not trying to," I said. "I just don't want to pretend it didn't matter."

"It didn't change anything."

"I know," I replied. "But it still mattered."

Kairo didn't argue. He just accepted it, like he always did when it didn't interfere with what he had already decided.

"You're calmer," he said.

"I think I just stopped pulling away," I admitted.

"You did."

I nodded slightly. "…Yeah."

That felt right.

More than anything else I had said.

"You're not holding yourself back," he added.

"You've said that already."

"And it's still true."

I glanced at him. "You really don't let anything go."

"No."

Of course not.

"That doesn't mean everything has some deep meaning," I said.

"It does."

I shook my head slightly, but there was no frustration behind it this time.

Because arguing didn't feel necessary anymore.

"…Maybe," I admitted.

Silence followed, but it didn't stretch. It stayed close, natural.

"You don't step back anymore," Kairo said.

I paused.

Because…

He was right.

"I didn't notice," I admitted.

"I did."

Of course he did.

"That doesn't mean anything," I said.

"It does."

I looked at him, and this time I didn't look away.

"…Then what does it mean?"

Silence.

Then—

"You tell me."

That answer again.

"You always say that."

"Because you always avoid it."

"I'm not avoiding it."

"You are."

I exhaled slowly.

"…It means I'm not trying to keep a distance anymore."

The words came out steady.

Clear.

Unavoidable.

Silence followed.

"And?" he asked.

"And it means… I don't feel like I need to."

That truth settled between us.

Quiet.

Real.

Kairo stepped closer, closing the distance completely.

This time—

I didn't even think about moving.

"You're finally honest," he said.

"I think I am."

"You are."

I let out a small breath.

"…Yeah."

Another pause followed, but it didn't feel uncertain.

It felt… settled.

"You're not leaving," Kairo said.

"…No."

The word came easily now.

Without hesitation.

Without doubt.

And this time—

It didn't feel like something I had to remind myself of.

It felt like something I already knew.

Something that had already become real.

Something that… mattered.
