Chapter 32 - Chapter 32: when you stop holding back

It didn't feel like I had to hold back anymore.

That realization came slowly, almost unnoticed, until I caught myself in the middle of it. Before, every word I said felt measured, every reaction controlled, like I was constantly trying not to cross a line I didn't fully understand.

Now… that line didn't feel as clear.

Or maybe I just stopped caring about it.

"You're staring again," Kairo said.

I didn't look away this time. "You always notice."

"Yes."

"That's still not normal."

"It is here."

I let out a quiet breath. "You really like that answer."

"It works."

I almost said something back, but I didn't. Instead, I just looked at him a second longer than I should have.

And didn't pretend it didn't matter.

That was new.

"You didn't deny it," he said.

"I didn't feel like it."

"Why?"

I shrugged slightly. "Because it wouldn't change anything."

"That's true."

Silence followed, but it didn't feel heavy. It didn't feel like something I needed to escape. It just stayed, calm and steady.

"You stopped holding back," Kairo said.

"I didn't notice."

"I did."

Of course he did.

"That doesn't mean anything," I said.

"It does."

I tilted my head slightly. "You say that about everything."

"Because everything does mean something."

I exhaled softly. "You really don't make this easy."

"No."

Another pause passed, but it didn't feel awkward. It felt natural, like everything else had started to.

"You're not careful anymore," he added.

"I am," I said. "Just not the same way."

"How?"

"I'm not overthinking every little thing," I admitted. "Before, it felt like everything I did could mess something up. Now… it doesn't feel like that."

"That's because you stopped pretending."

That word again.

Pretending.

I frowned slightly. "You keep saying that."

"Because you keep doing it."

"Not anymore."

"No," he said. "Not anymore."

Silence followed.

But this time—

It felt different.

Like something had shifted without me noticing.

"You're more honest now," Kairo said.

"I was always honest."

"No," he replied. "You were careful."

I paused.

Because…

That wasn't wrong.

"…There's a difference," I admitted.

"Yes."

I ran a hand lightly through my hair, exhaling slowly. "I guess I just don't see the point in holding back anymore."

"You don't."

"And you're okay with that?"

"Yes."

"You don't think it'll complicate things?"

"It won't."

"You don't know that."

"I do."

I shook my head slightly. "You're way too confident."

"And you're not confident enough."

"That's because I actually think about consequences."

"So do I."

"And?"

"And I still choose you."

My chest tightened.

That answer—

It didn't hit the same way it used to.

It wasn't overwhelming.

It wasn't confusing.

It just… stayed.

Quiet.

Certain.

Real.

I looked at him, and this time I didn't look away immediately.

"…You really don't hesitate," I said.

"No."

"I wish I could do that."

"You are."

I frowned slightly. "No, I'm not."

"You are," he repeated. "You're just not second-guessing it anymore."

"That's not the same thing."

"It is."

I let out a quiet breath, but I didn't argue.

Because part of me knew—

He was right.

Again.

"You're not thinking about leaving anymore," he said.

"…No."

The word came easily.

Without hesitation.

Without doubt.

"And you're not forcing that answer."

"No."

Silence settled, but it didn't feel uncertain.

It felt… steady.

"You're still thinking about him," Kairo said.

I didn't deny it. "Not in a way that matters."

"That will fade."

"I know."

"But you're not holding onto it."

"I'm not trying to," I said. "I just don't want to act like it didn't matter."

"It didn't change anything."

"I know," I replied. "But it still mattered."

Kairo didn't argue. He just accepted it, the way he always did when it didn't interfere with what he had already decided.

"You're calmer," he said.

"I think I just stopped fighting myself," I admitted.

"You did."

I exhaled slowly. "…Yeah."

That felt right.

More than anything else I had said so far.

"You're not holding yourself back," he added.

I frowned slightly. "You already said that."

"And it's still true."

I glanced at him. "You really don't let anything go."

"No."

Of course not.

"That doesn't mean everything has some deep meaning," I said.

"It does."

I shook my head, but there was no frustration behind it this time.

Because arguing didn't feel necessary anymore.

"…Maybe," I admitted.

Kairo stepped closer, closing the distance between us again.

This time—

I didn't even notice when it happened.

That was the difference.

"You stopped treating this like something temporary," he said.

"I know."

"And you're not holding back anymore."

"…I guess I'm not."

The words came out softer this time.

But they didn't shake.

They didn't hesitate.

They just… existed.

Silence followed, but it didn't feel empty.

It felt complete.

"You're not leaving," Kairo said.

"…No."

And this time—

It didn't feel like something I had to remind myself of.

It felt like something that had already been decided long ago.

Something I had already accepted.

Something I had already become part of.
