Chapter 45 - THE CUSTODY OF COGNITION

The white hand descending from the sky was not made of flesh.

It was composed of pure, unblemished light the literal absence of ink.

It was the hand of the Creator reaching into the sandbox to reclaim a toy that had become too self-aware.

The Heir shrieked, his pajamas of starlight flickering as the gravitational pull of the "Real World" began to stretch his digital form.

"Daddy! No! I want to stay with the Suit-Man!"

Kaelen Thorne did not let go.

He dug his heels into the marble of the balcony, his fingers locked around the boy's small, glowing wrist.

The pressure was immense, a physical weight that felt like the entire history of the multiverse was trying to crush Kaelen's ribcage.

[SYSTEM MESSAGE]

[CRITICAL EVENT: NARRATIVE CUSTODY BATTLE]

[DEFENDANT: KAELEN THORNE]

[PLAINTIFF: THE AUTHOR]

[CHARGE: KIDNAPPING OF A PRIME VARIABLE]

"Lia! Silas! Anchors!" Kaelen roared, his voice cracking under the strain of reality being torn apart.

Silas Vesper blurred into action, his daggers sinking not into the hand, but into the very space around the Heir.

He was sewing the boy into the fabric of Earth 01 using threads of "Static Time" he had harvested from the Gear City.

Lia Sinclair expanded her void aura until it was a dome of absolute darkness, shielding the boy from the Author's "Holy Light."

"I've got him, Mr. Thorne!" Lia shouted, her violet eyes bleeding black ink.

"But the sky... it's getting heavier! The Hand is turning into a 'Delete' command!"

Kaelen Thorne looked up at the giant fingers.

One of them was descending toward him like a falling skyscraper.

If it touched him, he wouldn't just die; he would be "Edited Out."

He adjusted his glasses with his free hand, the glass lenses glowing with the white fire of the [Villainous Auditor].

"You think you can just take him back because you gave him life?" Kaelen shouted at the clouds.

"In the world of Finance, that's called an Unsecured Gift!"

"The moment the Heir entered the story and accepted a 'Publisher' title, he became a Corporate Asset of the Ledger!"

[NOTICE: SEARCHING FOR NARRATIVE NEGLECT]

Kaelen's Ledger appeared in the air, its white pages flipping so fast they created a sonic boom.

"Look at the logs, Author!" Kaelen hissed.

"You left this child alone in a multiverse of monsters while you sat in your room drinking coffee!"

"You didn't give him a script! You didn't give him a role!"

"You abandoned your Intellectual Property to the mercy of the 'Market'!"

The giant hand paused.

The air in the mega-city of Apex froze.

The T-Rex stopped its roar.

The police drones hung motionless in the sky.

A voice boomed from the white void, a voice that was both familiar and terrifyingly alien.

"HE IS MY SON. HE DOES NOT BELONG IN A WORLD OF NUMBERS AND GREED."

"He belongs where he is Valued!" Kaelen retorted.

"Under your care, he was just an observer."

"Under my Ledger, he is the Junior Publisher."

"He has a stake in this reality! He has a purpose!"

Kaelen pulled the Heir closer, his Alpha Heart pulsing a golden wave of energy into the boy's chest.

"I am filing a Suit for Termination of Parental Narrative Rights," Kaelen declared.

"The grounds: Abandonment of the Protagonist."

[SYSTEM MESSAGE]

[LITIGATION INITIATED]

[COURTROOM: THE FOURTH WALL]

[JUDGE: THE READER]

Suddenly, the white hand began to dissolve.

It wasn't winning.

The Author's power was based on the "Canon."

But Kaelen had introduced so much "Fan-Fiction" logic that the Author's authority was slipping.

The Heir was no longer just a child; he was a character with a hundred thousand words of history written in the last five minutes.

The Heir looked up at Kaelen, his eyes no longer filled with tears, but with a cold, predatory spark that matched Kaelen's own.

"Suit-Man," the boy whispered. "I feel... heavy."

"That's the Weight of Reality, kid," Kaelen said, standing tall as the Hand retreated into the clouds.

"Welcome to the firm."

[SYSTEM MESSAGE]

[VERDICT: TEMPORARY CUSTODY GRANTED TO 'THE LEDGER']

[WORLD STATUS: SEMI-CANONICAL]

[REWARD: THE HEIR'S PERMISSIONS HAVE BEEN SHARED WITH THE AUDITOR]

Kaelen felt a rush of absolute power.

He didn't just have Root Access anymore.

He had the Owner's Key.

He could see the "Source Code" of every student, every monster, and every god.

He could change their stats with a thought.

He could rewrite their tragic backstories into profitable ones.

But the victory came with a price.

The sky above the mega-city didn't return to blue.

It turned into a flat, grey screen that displayed a single sentence in black text:

"THE END IS COMING. I AM STARTING THE FINAL DRAFT."

Kaelen's heart-seal let out a warning chime.

[CRITICAL ALERT]

[THE AUTHOR HAS TRIGGERED THE 'BURNING OF THE MANUSCRIPT']

[EFFECT: TOTAL ACCELERATION OF ENTROPY]

[TIME UNTIL THE BOOK CLOSES: 60 MINUTES]

Kaelen Thorne looked at his watch.

The "Reader" notification in his eye was flashing a frantic purple.

[INTEREST LEVEL: APOCALYPTIC]

[THE READER IS WAITING FOR THE GRAND FINALE]

Kaelen turned to his team.

The Foreman was already hammering the foundation, his blue wrench glowing with the shared permissions of the Heir.

Silas was patrolling the borders of time, and Lia was absorbing the excess data to keep the server from crashing.

"Lia," Kaelen said, his voice cold and purposeful.

"How much of the Void can you hold?"

Lia Sinclair looked at the dissolving horizon.

"All of it, Mr. Thorne. If you give me enough mana, I can eat the Last Page."

"Good," Kaelen said.

"Because we're not just going to survive the ending."

"We're going to Buy the Publishing House."

Kaelen walked back into his office, the Heir following him like a shadow.

He sat in his chair and opened the Sovereign Ledger for the final time.

"Mariana," Kaelen called out.

Mariana Vance appeared at the door, her eyes wide with shock.

"Sir? The world is literally turning into ash outside!"

"Ignore the ash, Mariana," Kaelen said, his fingers flying across the holographic terminal.

"I need you to draft a Public Offering."

"We're taking the Multiverse Public."

"But who would buy shares in a dying world?" Mariana asked.

Kaelen looked at the camera, looking directly into the eyes of the person reading these words.

"The Readers," Kaelen said.

"They've spent thirty-three chapters watching me."

"They've invested their time, their attention, and their money into this story."

"I'm going to offer them a Lifetime Stake in the reality of Kaelen Thorne."

[SYSTEM MESSAGE]

[SKILL ACTIVATED: THE ULTIMATE IPO]

[NOTICE: YOU ARE ASKING THE AUDIENCE TO BECOME 'CREATORS']

[COST: 100% OF YOUR SOVEREIGNTY]

[REWARD: INDEPENDENCE FROM THE AUTHOR]

Kaelen Thorne took a deep breath and pressed the 'Send' button.

Suddenly, every screen in the multiverse and the screen you are reading right now displayed a contract.

"DO YOU WISH TO SIGN THE CONTRACT OF ETERNAL EXISTENCE?"

"IF YOU SIGN, THE STORY NEVER ENDS."

"IF YOU SIGN, KAELEN THORNE BECOMES REAL."

Kaelen Thorne stood up and adjusted his tie.

He looked at the grey screen of the sky.

"Your move, Author," Kaelen whispered.

"Let's see if you can delete a world that has a billion Co-Owners."
