Chapter 44 - THE SPOILED DIVIDEND

The sky over the thirteen merged worlds did not turn red from fire.

It turned a soft glowing gold like a child's nightlight.

Floating in the center of that celestial radiance was a boy no older than ten.

He was wearing pajamas that looked like they were woven from the fabric of distant nebulas.

In his hand he held a simple plastic red button that hummed with the power to unmake the stars.

The Heir looked down at the sprawling mega-city of Apex with a bored expression on his face.

My dad says your ledger is making the servers too hot the boy spoke his voice echoing like a loud toy in a quiet room.

He says you're using too many words and not enough explosions.

I'm here to fix the pacing.

[SYSTEM MESSAGE]

[TARGET IDENTIFIED: THE HEIR]

[PERMISSIONS: ABSOLUTE / ROOT ACCESS]

[STATUS: THE AUTHOR'S FAVORITE CHILD]

Kaelen Thorne stood on the balcony his charcoal suit flapping in the wind created by the boy's presence.

Beside him the Foreman froze his massive blue wrench trembling in his iron grip.

Master the Foreman whispered his voice filled with a terror that surpassed even the fear of the Void.

That's the Son.

He doesn't care about the rules or the contracts.

He just likes to see the things break so he can build them again.

Kaelen Thorne adjusted his tie his obsidian eyes narrowing as he analyzed the golden child.

This was the ultimate narrative threat.

It was not a god bound by divine law or a demon bound by greed.

It was a child with the power of a creator and the attention span of a lightning bolt.

Lia Sinclair lunged toward the sky her violet void aura expanding to a size that blocked out the horizon.

She didn't wait for a command.

She sensed the absolute deletion coming from the red button and her instinct was to consume it.

Lia! Kaelen shouted.

It was too late.

The Heir looked at Lia and giggled.

Bad dog the boy said.

He didn't press the button.

He simply waved his left hand.

[SKILL ACTIVATED: PARENTAL LOCK]

[TARGET: LIA SINCLAIR]

Lia Sinclair froze in mid air.

Her violet aura didn't just vanish it turned into a static image of a girl.

She was suspended in reality like a butterfly pinned to a board.

She was alive but she was no longer a character in the story.

She had been 'Paused'.

Silas Vesper tried to move but the ground beneath him turned into a sticky yellow substance that smelled like lemon candy.

He was trapped in a literal play-pen of divine physics.

Kaelen Thorne stood alone facing the golden light.

He felt the Alpha Heart in his chest slowing down as the boy's presence overwrote the heartbeat of the world.

You're going to delete the world because it's too complicated? Kaelen asked.

His voice was calm and steady but his mind was running a thousand simulations per second.

It's boring the Heir said swinging his legs as he floated.

My dad spent a hundred chapters on your banks and your lawsuits.

I want to play a game with dragons and laser beams.

If I press the button everything goes back to the beginning.

Alaric becomes the hero again and you go back to being a ghost in the rain.

Kaelen Thorne stepped to the very edge of the balcony.

He didn't reach for his Ledger.

He reached for a small golden coin he had taken from Plutus earlier.

If you press that button you'll have your dragons and your lasers Kaelen said.

But you'll also lose the High Score.

The Heir paused his thumb hovering over the red button.

High Score?

Every world has a value Kaelen explained his eyes glowing with a sharp manipulative gold.

Project Earth 01 is currently the most profitable branch in the multiverse.

It has the highest complexity rating and the most unique assets.

If you reset it you go back to a Level 1 world.

It's like deleting a save file right before the final boss.

Kaelen held up the golden coin.

I am the one who built this save file Heir.

I've managed thirteen worlds into a single city.

If you delete me you're just a kid playing in a sandbox.

But if you let the story continue... you can be the Publisher.

The Heir tilted his head his glowing eyes looking at the golden coin.

What does a Publisher do?

A Publisher doesn't do the work Kaelen whispered his voice a seductive hum.

A Publisher just watches the profit grow and decides when to release the Expansion Packs.

You think my ledger is boring?

I'll give you a seat on the Board of Directors.

I'll let you design the next wave of monsters.

I'll give you a Sandbox Mode where you can test any weapon you want on the Gods I've already bankrupted.

[SKILL ACTIVATED: THE SPOILED DIVIDEND]

[NOTICE: YOU ARE OFFERING THE HEIR A 'PRODUCER CREDIT']

[PROBABILITY OF ACCEPTANCE: 50% / 50%]

The Heir looked at the red button then at the thirteen worlds of the mega-city.

He saw the T-Rex fighting the police drones.

He saw the elven princes and the cyber-metropolis.

He realized that Kaelen had built him the ultimate toy box.

I want a dragon made of diamonds the Heir said.

I'll give you a whole legion of them Kaelen promised.

I want to be able to pause the story whenever I want.

You already have the permissions Kaelen said.

The Heir smiled and the golden light in the sky turned into a warm orange.

He didn't put the button away but he didn't press it either.

He descended to the balcony landing softly in front of Kaelen.

You're funny Suit-Man the boy said.

My dad said you were a villain.

But I think you're just a really good salesman.

Kaelen adjusted his tie and let out a breath he didn't know he was holding.

I'm an Accountant heir Kaelen said.

And an accountant knows that everyone has a price even the son of a god.

The PAUSE on Lia Sinclair vanished.

She fell to the balcony floor gasping for air her violet eyes filled with a new kind of terror.

The lemon candy trap around Silas dissolved into smoke.

[SYSTEM MESSAGE]

[EVENT COMPLETE: THE HEIR'S INSPECTION]

[NEW ASSET ACQUIRED: THE JUNIOR PUBLISHER]

[CURRENT RANK: THE PROTECTED ONE]

Kaelen looked at the sky and saw the Reader's notification.

[INTEREST LEVEL: BEYOND LIMITS]

[THE READER IS EXCITED FOR THE 'SANDBOX' ARC]

But as Kaelen turned to lead the Heir into the Academy a new sound echoed from the Void.

It was not the sound of a child or a god.

It was the sound of a System Error that was deep and guttural.

[CRITICAL WARNING]

[THE AUTHOR HAS REALIZED HIS SON HAS JOINED THE STORY]

[THE NARRATIVE IS NOW DECLARED 'UNCANONICAL']

[INITIATING: THE TOTAL RECALL OF THE SCRIPT]

Suddenly the world around Kaelen began to peel away like a wet painting.

The Heir looked at his hands which were starting to turn into white paper.

Daddy? the boy whispered his face turning pale.

Kaelen Thorne grabbed the Heir by his shoulder.

He realized that the Author wasn't trying to save the world anymore.

He was trying to save his son from the "Corruption" of the characters.

He was trying to pull the Heir out of the page.

And if the Heir left the world would have no "Absolute Permission" to exist.

Lia! Silas! Kaelen roared.

Don't let him leave!

If the Son leaves the office... the building collapses!
