Chapter 44 - CHAPTER 44: Closer Than Before

The city felt different that night.

Or maybe… it was just them.

Soo Bin stood outside her apartment building, staring at her phone for the third time in two minutes.

A message.

From So Hee.

"Be ready. I'm picking you up."

No explanation.

No question.

Just like her.

Soo Bin smiled to herself, shaking her head. "Unbelievable…" she muttered, but there was no hiding the warmth in her voice.

Still… she got ready faster than usual.

When the car pulled up, Soo Bin stepped in, trying to act normal—but the moment she sat down and saw So Hee…

Her heart skipped.

Again.

"You're staring," So Hee said without looking at her.

"I'm not," Soo Bin replied quickly.

"You are."

Soo Bin huffed softly. "You're just… different today."

That made So Hee glance at her.

"Different how?"

Soo Bin hesitated, then smiled slightly. "Less scary."

So Hee let out a quiet breath that almost sounded like a laugh.

"Don't get used to it."

But the softness in her eyes said otherwise.

They ended up at a quiet restaurant—not too crowded, not too loud. Just enough space for them to exist… without interruption.

Dinner started simple.

Light conversation.

Small teasing.

But beneath it all—

There was something deeper.

"You've been smiling a lot," So Hee noted, watching Soo Bin carefully.

Soo Bin raised an eyebrow. "Is that a problem?"

"No."

A pause.

"…I like it."

That caught Soo Bin off guard.

Her smile softened.

"You're being honest a lot today," she said quietly.

So Hee didn't look away this time. "Only with you."

The words settled between them—warm, heavy, meaningful.

After dinner, they didn't rush home.

Instead, they walked.

Side by side.

Close—but not quite touching.

Until Soo Bin's hand brushed against So Hee's.

Light. Accidental.

But neither pulled away.

So Hee's fingers shifted slightly—just enough to hook around Soo Bin's.

A quiet decision.

A silent claim.

Soo Bin's breath caught.

But she didn't let go.

Instead…

She held on tighter.

The world around them faded.

When they reached the car again, neither of them moved immediately.

The air inside felt warm.

Familiar.

Dangerously quiet.

Soo Bin turned slightly toward her. "So… is this your way of dating?" she teased softly.

So Hee leaned back in her seat, eyes still on her. "Do you not like it?"

Soo Bin smiled. "I didn't say that."

Silence fell again.

But this time—

It pulled them closer.

So Hee moved first.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Her hand lifted, brushing gently against Soo Bin's cheek, her thumb resting just beneath her ear.

The touch was warm.

Careful.

But it carried weight.

Soo Bin's breath softened, her eyes fluttering slightly at the contact.

"You always do that…" she whispered.

"Do what?" So Hee murmured.

"Look at me like that…"

So Hee didn't answer.

She just leaned closer.

This time, the kiss didn't hesitate.

It started soft—

Lips brushing, testing, familiar now but still electric.

Soo Bin responded instantly, her hand lifting to rest lightly against So Hee's wrist, as if anchoring herself to the moment.

The kiss deepened slowly.

Not rushed.

Not overwhelming.

Just… intentional.

So Hee tilted her head slightly, her hand sliding from Soo Bin's cheek to the back of her neck, pulling her just a little closer.

Soo Bin let out a quiet breath against her lips, her fingers tightening slightly as she leaned in more.

Everything felt slower.

Heavier.

Like time had decided to pause just for them.

When they finally pulled apart, it wasn't far.

Their foreheads rested together, breaths warm, uneven.

Soo Bin laughed softly, her voice barely above a whisper.

"…You're really unfair."

So Hee's lips curved slightly. "Why?"

Soo Bin opened her eyes, meeting hers.

"Because you act like this… and expect me to stay calm."

So Hee leaned in again—just enough for her voice to brush against Soo Bin's lips.

"Then don't."

Soo Bin's heart raced all over again.

She didn't pull away this time.

And neither did So Hee.

Somewhere else in the city, under bright hospital lights, Go Eun stood reviewing charts—only to feel a familiar presence beside her again.

Kang So Ra.

Uninvited.

Unexpected.

But not unwelcome.

"You're working late again," So Ra said, her tone light—but her eyes focused.

Go Eun didn't look up immediately.

"…So are you."

So Ra smiled slightly.

"Maybe I had a reason."

Go Eun paused.

Then glanced at her.

And just like before—

That quiet tension returned.

Stronger this time.
