Chapter 43 - CHAPTER 43: Say it Again

The silence in the car didn't feel empty.

It felt full.

Too full.

Heavy with everything that had just been said… and everything that hadn't.

Soo Bin stared at Kim So Hee, her heart still racing uncontrollably.

Be my girlfriend.

The words echoed in her mind, over and over again.

And yet—

Instead of answering…

She smiled.

A slow, teasing smile.

So Hee narrowed her eyes slightly. "Why are you smiling?"

Soo Bin leaned back against her seat, crossing her arms casually as if her heart wasn't about to burst out of her chest.

"Lieutenant Kim…" she started, her tone light, playful. "That's how you confess?"

So Hee blinked once.

"…What?"

Soo Bin tilted her head, clearly enjoying this now. "No 'I like you'? No 'I've been thinking about you'? Just 'be my girlfriend' like it's an order?"

There was a spark in her eyes.

Playful.

Bold.

Completely different from the nervous Soo Bin from before.

So Hee stared at her for a moment.

Then—

She leaned closer.

"Do you need me to say it differently?"

Her voice dropped.

Lower.

Closer.

Dangerous.

Soo Bin's breath hitched—but she didn't move away.

Instead, she smirked. "Maybe."

That was all it took.

So Hee reached out, her hand gripping the edge of Soo Bin's seat, leaning in just enough to close the distance between them.

Her eyes locked onto Soo Bin's—sharp, intense, unshakable.

"Fine," she said quietly.

Then—slower this time—

"I like you."

Soo Bin's heart skipped.

"I've been thinking about you," So Hee continued, her voice softer now, but no less intense. "More than I should."

Her gaze dropped briefly to Soo Bin's lips before returning to her eyes.

"And I don't want anyone else near you."

The air changed.

Completely.

Soo Bin's teasing expression faltered—just slightly.

Because now…

This wasn't a game anymore.

"…That's better," she whispered, though her voice wasn't as steady as before.

So Hee didn't pull away.

Didn't break eye contact.

"Then answer me," she said.

Soo Bin swallowed softly.

Her heart.

Her chest.

Her entire body felt like it was on fire.

And yet—

She smiled again.

"You're really something, you know that?" she said softly.

So Hee didn't react. "Answer me."

Soo Bin let out a small laugh, shaking her head.

"You didn't even give me time to process anything," she murmured.

Then she leaned closer.

Closer.

Until there was barely any space left between them.

"But…"

She paused.

Just to watch So Hee's reaction.

Just to feel that tension stretch one more second.

"I like you too."

That was it.

Something in So Hee's expression shifted instantly.

Relief.

Satisfaction.

Something deeper.

"You're late," So Hee muttered softly.

Soo Bin laughed under her breath. "You're the one who skipped straight to commanding me."

But this time—

Neither of them moved away.

The space between them had already disappeared.

So Hee's hand lifted slowly, brushing lightly against Soo Bin's cheek.

The touch was gentle.

Unexpectedly gentle.

Soo Bin froze for a second—then leaned into it.

Just slightly.

Their eyes met again.

Closer now.

Softer.

But still burning.

And then—

So Hee closed the distance.

The kiss wasn't rushed.

It wasn't hesitant either.

It was… deliberate.

Soft at first.

Testing.

Soo Bin's breath caught, but she didn't pull away.

Instead, her hand moved instinctively, gripping lightly onto So Hee's sleeve, as if grounding herself in the moment.

The kiss deepened.

Slow.

Warm.

Lingering.

Like something they had both been holding back for far too long.

When they finally pulled apart, their foreheads almost touched, breaths uneven, hearts racing in sync.

"…You're trouble," Soo Bin whispered, a soft laugh escaping her.

So Hee's lips curved slightly.

"Only for you."

Silence followed again.

But this time—

It was different.

Comfortable.

Certain.

The kind of silence that didn't need words anymore.

After a moment, Soo Bin spoke again, quieter this time.

"…We shouldn't tell anyone yet."

So Hee nodded without hesitation. "We won't."

A small smile spread across Soo Bin's lips.

"Good," she said. "Because I don't think I can handle everyone's reactions right now."

So Hee glanced at her, eyes softer than before.

"You won't have to."

And just like that—

Without announcement.

Without witnesses.

Without permission from the world—

They became something more.
