Chapter 67 - Night Patrol – The Hidden Entrance

The stone wall groaned.

A deep scraping noise echoed through the hidden room as part of the entrance slowly shifted open.

Mary clutched the black file tightly against her chest.

David grabbed a broken metal rod from the floor.

Daniel stood frozen near the wall, barely breathing.

Heavy footsteps entered the narrow corridor outside.

One.

Then another.

A lantern glow spilled through the opening.

A shadow appeared.

Tall.

Still.

Watching.

Then—

Mr. Stone stepped inside.

Silence crushed the room.

His tired eyes moved from Mary… to David… to Daniel… and finally to the black file in Mary's hands.

For a long moment, nobody moved.

David raised the metal rod.

"Don't come closer."

Mr. Stone's voice was low.

"You stole it."

Mary's hands trembled, but she stepped forward.

"You lied to us."

Mr. Stone's jaw tightened.

"I protected you."

David snapped.

"Protected us? Those students were experimented on!"

Daniel's heart pounded.

The hidden boy pressed against the wall, chains rattling softly.

Mr. Stone looked at him.

Sadness crossed his face.

Then guilt.

That made Mary notice something.

He wasn't angry.

He looked… tired.

Broken.

Mr. Stone slowly raised both empty hands.

"If I wanted to hurt you, you wouldn't still have that file."

Silence.

David still didn't trust him.

"Then explain."

Mr. Stone looked at the black records.

Then at the hidden boy.

Then at the cracked stone floor.

Finally he said:

"This school was built over something older than the academy."

The room turned cold.

Daniel frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Mr. Stone walked toward the wall covered in black symbols.

His lantern light flickered across them.

"These marks weren't created by students."

Mary whispered, "Then who made them?"

Mr. Stone's voice dropped.

"No one knows."

Years ago, workers digging beneath the academy had found tunnels.

Old sealed chambers.

Strange symbols.

Whispers reported by guards.

Then students started changing.

Not physically into monsters.

But mentally.

Nightmares.

Lost memory.

Aggression.

Following voices.

Some became violent.

Some vanished.

Some broke free.

The academy hid everything.

Calling them:

Controlled Subjects.

David's grip weakened.

"So the file…"

Mr. Stone nodded.

"Records of every infected student."

Mary looked at the chained boy.

"And him?"

Mr. Stone's expression darkened.

"He escaped before full control."

The boy whispered:

"I begged him…"

Everyone turned.

The hidden boy lifted his head.

Weakly.

"I asked him… to chain me."

Daniel stared.

"What?"

The boy swallowed hard.

"When whispers returned… I was scared I would hurt someone."

Mary's eyes widened.

So Mr. Stone had not imprisoned him.

He had protected him.

David lowered the rod.

A little.

But not fully.

"Then why hide him?"

Mr. Stone's eyes hardened.

"Because the academy board wanted every subject removed."

Daniel understood instantly.

"Removed?"

Mr. Stone didn't answer directly.

But the silence was enough.

Mary gripped the file tighter.

"You hid him here."

Mr. Stone nodded once.

"I couldn't let them take him."

For the first time…

David looked ashamed.

Then Daniel remembered.

"Subject #12."

The room froze.

Mr. Stone's face changed.

Real fear.

Mary slowly opened the file again.

She unfolded the half-sealed page.

Lantern light trembled across the paper.

At top:

SUBJECT #12

Status: Under Observation

Then—

the full name became visible.

DAVID HART

Silence exploded.

David stopped breathing.

"What…?"

Mary stared.

Daniel's stomach dropped.

Mr. Stone moved quickly.

"Step back from the symbols!"

Too late.

David's hand had already brushed a page covered in black marks.

The lantern flickered violently.

A whisper echoed through the chamber.

Soft.

Unclear.

Like someone speaking from underground.

David grabbed his head.

"No…"

Mary rushed to him.

"David!"

He stumbled backward.

Breathing hard.

Eyes wide with panic.

"I hear it."

Daniel grabbed his shoulder.

"Hear what?"

David's voice shook.

"The whisper."

The hidden boy's chains rattled.

Mr. Stone's face turned pale.

"It started."

Mary looked between them.

"What started?!"

Mr. Stone whispered:

"Observation."

The lantern flame bent sharply.

Wind moved through the sealed tunnel.

Though no door was open.

Then—

from deeper beneath the basement—

a distant metallic scream echoed through the underground halls.

Not human.

Not clear.

Just terrifying.

The hidden boy shut his eyes.

And whispered:

"The lower chamber woke up."

Daniel slowly turned toward the darkness beyond the hidden wall.

Something moved far below.

Watching.

Waiting.

And now—

it knew they were there.

To be continued…
