Chapter 66 - Night Patrol – The Controlled File

The hidden room was silent except for the faint dripping of water from somewhere deep inside the basement walls.

Mary knelt on the cold stone floor, staring at the black file in front of her.

David stood near the cracked doorway, breathing hard after their narrow escape.

Daniel shut the hidden door behind them and pressed his back against it.

For a few seconds, nobody spoke.

The file sat between them like something alive.

Old.

Dark.

Dangerous.

"We actually stole it," David whispered.

Mary slowly reached forward and brushed dust from its black cover. Her fingers trembled. Across the front, faded silver letters were barely visible beneath scratches and dirt.

CONTROLLED SUBJECT ARCHIVE

Daniel's chest tightened.

"That doesn't sound normal."

David gave a nervous laugh. "No kidding."

From the far side of the room came a weak rattling sound.

Chains.

The hidden boy had woken up.

He sat against the damp wall, wrists still bound in old iron restraints. His face was pale, his hair messy, and fear flashed across his eyes the moment he saw the file.

"No…" he whispered.

Mary turned sharply. "You know this?"

The boy's breathing became uneven.

"Put it away."

David stepped closer. "Tell us what this is."

The boy shook his head violently.

"Don't open it."

That only made them more certain.

Mary looked at Daniel.

Daniel looked at David.

David slowly sat beside the file.

"We open it."

The room seemed colder.

Mary lifted the cover.

Dust rose into the air.

Inside were thick pages, yellowed with age, stained by moisture and burn marks.

At the first page, black ink covered nearly the entire sheet.

Across the top:

CONTROLLED SUBJECT LIST

Silence.

Daniel swallowed.

Mary turned the page.

Rows of records.

Student names.

Numbers.

Dates.

Status notes.

Real records.

Not random papers.

Not fake.

David leaned closer.

"These are students…"

Mary read quietly.

Subject #03 – Liam Carter

Age: 15

Status: Missing

Condition: Unstable episodes. Sleep disruption.

Daniel frowned.

"Missing?"

Mary turned another page.

Subject #06 – Sarah Wells

Age: 16

Status: Isolated

Condition: Memory irregularities. Response to symbol exposure.

David's voice lowered.

"These are academy students."

Another page.

Subject #09 – Roniel Drake

Status: Failed Subject

That was all.

No details.

Only those two terrifying words.

Mary's hands shook slightly.

Daniel stared.

"This isn't some punishment record…"

David muttered, "Someone was studying them."

Then—

the hidden boy let out a sharp breath.

Mary turned.

His eyes were fixed on the file.

Wide.

Terrified.

She slowly flipped another page.

Black symbols.

Dozens of them.

The same twisted dark mark they had seen scratched onto basement walls.

Circles.

Lines.

Crooked shapes that looked almost alive.

David stepped back.

"It's the same symbol."

Mary nodded slowly.

"This connects everything."

She kept turning.

Then she froze.

A page had sketches.

Medical notes.

Observations.

Then one record.

Half torn.

But enough remained.

Subject #11

Status: Escaped

Location: Lower Basement Hold

Condition: Unstable

Everyone turned toward the chained boy.

The boy lowered his head.

Daniel whispered, "That's you."

He said nothing.

David stepped closer.

"You were in this file."

The boy's breathing shook.

Mary softened her voice.

"Were you one of the controlled subjects?"

After a long silence…

He nodded once.

Very slowly.

Daniel felt cold.

Not a monster.

Not a ghost.

A student.

A real student.

David stared. "What did they do to you?"

The boy whispered hoarsely:

"I don't remember everything."

Mary crouched beside him.

"What do you remember?"

His eyes unfocused.

"Dark rooms… whispers… lights… symbols…"

He shut his eyes tightly.

"People watching."

Daniel felt sick.

David looked back at the file.

"Who did this?"

Mary turned more pages.

Then she found handwritten notes—different from the printed records.

Messy handwriting.

Fast.

Urgent.

She read aloud:

Containment weakening.

More students showing symptoms.

Keep lower chamber sealed.

Do not allow exposure.

Daniel's heart pounded.

David grabbed another sheet.

More writing.

Different note.

Shorter.

Shakier.

If this file is found, hide them.

Silence.

Mary stared.

Daniel slowly said, "That doesn't sound like someone creating this."

David frowned.

"No…"

Mary finished softly:

"It sounds like someone trying to stop it."

Three of them thought the same thing.

Mr. Stone.

Daniel remembered how exhausted Mr. Stone looked in class.

How distracted.

How alone.

David clenched his jaw.

"But why hide all this?"

Nobody answered.

The chained boy suddenly whispered:

"He knows."

All three turned.

Mary moved closer.

"Mr. Stone?"

The boy nodded faintly.

"He knows the basement."

Daniel's chest tightened.

"Is he helping?"

The boy hesitated.

Then whispered:

"I… don't know."

That was worse.

Because now Mr. Stone could be anything.

A protector.

A liar.

Or part of it.

David exhaled sharply.

"We need to know everything."

Mary turned another page.

More records.

Missing names.

Observation notes.

Some pages burned.

Some torn.

Some blank except symbols.

Then—

the last section.

A sealed page.

Partly folded.

Dark wax nearly broken.

Daniel slowly reached for it.

Mary whispered, "Careful."

David leaned close.

Daniel peeled it back.

The paper crackled.

At top:

SUBJECT #12

Below it:

Status: Under Observation

And beneath that—

a name.

Partly visible.

Familiar.

Very familiar.

Mary's face went white.

David stopped breathing.

Daniel's fingers tightened.

"No way…"

Only part of the name could be seen.

Enough to recognize it.

Someone they knew.

Someone close.

A floorboard creaked outside.

Everyone froze.

Footsteps.

Coming down the corridor.

Slow.

Heavy.

Mary shut the file instantly.

David killed the lantern.

Darkness swallowed the room.

The chained boy pressed back in fear.

The footsteps stopped outside the hidden wall.

Daniel could hear his own heartbeat.

One breath.

Two breaths.

Silence.

Then—

a scraping sound.

Like stone shifting.

Mary whispered:

"He found us."

The hidden room fell completely still.

And outside—

someone was opening the entrance.

To be continued…
