Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: I Killed Him

"Yes… we meet again."

"I never thought that in the end, I'd die by your hands."

Looking at Zenin Mirai standing half a meter away, Suguru Geto slowly slid down the wall and sat on the ground.

"I didn't expect you to have mastered long-distance teleportation as well…"

"I had Miguel stall Satoru, but I never imagined you were hiding a trick like this."

A bitter smile appeared at the corner of Geto's lips.

"That was quite the miscalculation…"

Even now, Geto had not doubted the text message Miguel had sent.

Instead, he assumed Mirai's sudden appearance was simply another technique Mirai had never revealed before.

"Since you've been so obsessed with Okkotsu's cursed spirit," Mirai asked softly while glancing at the black screen of his phone, "why didn't you come after me during the past ten years?"

"Heh…"

Geto tried to speak, but several streaks of blood spilled from the corner of his mouth.

"Even among Special Grades… not all of us have power like Satoru."

"The Zenin clan is one of the Three Great Families. Without absolute preparation, should I have just walked straight to your door and delivered myself?"

"I see…"

Mirai frowned slightly.

"If you were that wary of the Zenin clan, why didn't you contact me and arrange a meeting outside?"

"In a one-on-one fight, did you really lack confidence in killing me and taking the cursed spirit afterward?"

Geto paused.

"Contact you…? You would have actually met me alone?"

"I would have."

Geto chuckled bitterly again.

"Then it seems I truly missed an enormous opportunity."

He didn't suspect Mirai of lying. After all, he was about to die.

Raising his remaining left hand, Geto wiped the blood from his mouth.

"When I first met you… I had a strange premonition."

"The look in your eyes back then… was exactly like the look I had when I first devoured a Special Grade."

"That greed hidden deep in your gaze… I know it very well."

Mirai crossed his arms and nodded.

"Looks like I really have no talent for acting."

"That guy Satoru Gojo says the same thing. Whenever he talks about me at Jujutsu High, he always says the smile on my face looks fake."

Mirai looked up toward the sky above Jujutsu High, where the smoke from the battle was slowly settling. At that moment, his phone screen lit up.

"Maki and Inumaki seem to be heading this way."

"Do you have any last wishes?" Mirai stood and walked slowly toward him. "Something simple."

"After all… this body of yours will be quite useful to me."

"I see…"

Geto tilted his head slightly, looking at Mirai's calm expression with a faint smile.

"You're kinder than I expected."

"If possible… don't go after my family."

"I promise."

Holding the sword in his hand, Mirai answered quietly.

The "family" Geto spoke of were simply the girls Nanako Hasaba and Mimiko Hasaba—sorcerers who posed absolutely no threat to Mirai.

Insignificant insects.

Mirai had never cared about them to begin with.

The sharp blade easily pierced through Geto's heart.

Crimson blood slowly seeped out from his chest.

Seeing the relieved smile on Geto's face, a trace of complexity flickered across Mirai's expression.

Geto had called ordinary humans "monkeys," and had even killed his own parents with his own hands.

Yet toward fellow sorcerers, he had been exceptionally warm and tolerant.

Committing slaughter in the name of righteousness…

It was truly difficult to judge.

"Mirai-nii!"

Maki Zenin and Toge Inumaki had just approached when they saw Geto's corpse disappear into space with a wave of Mirai's hand.

Mirai turned back with a faint smile.

"It's fine now. Geto has already been killed by me."

Maki let out a breath of relief.

"Good. That bastard almost killed us earlier."

"Okkotsu is still unconscious. Inumaki and I were even planning to finish him off while he was badly injured."

None of them knew the relationship between Geto and Gojo.

To them, he was simply a dangerous sorcerer with terrifying ideals who had attacked Jujutsu High.

Mirai, who understood everything, naturally had no intention of explaining.

Looking at Maki, he smiled slightly.

"It seems that after leaving the Zenin clan, you've made quite a few good friends."

A faint blush appeared on Maki's face.

"I was just worried… that if someone that dangerous escaped, he might come back with something even worse next time."

Inumaki glanced at the stubborn Maki, then nodded in agreement.

"Salmon."

"Let's go check on Okkotsu first."

Mirai chuckled softly and followed the two of them back toward the school.

The barrier surrounding Jujutsu High had already shattered.

Night had just begun to fall outside.

As the last glow of the sunset faded away, the smile on Mirai's face seemed to carry a faint trace of something… eerie.

Perhaps Geto wasn't entirely correct.

At the very least, the students couldn't tell that his smile was fake.

If he wanted to practice… spending more time around students might be a good idea.

At the edge of a massive crater, Yuta Okkotsu suddenly opened his eyes.

Maki. Inumaki. Panda.

Seeing the familiar faces crowded around him, Yuta let out a relieved sigh.

"Thank goodness… you're all safe."

Seeing him awaken, Panda grinned.

"No need to worry. Teacher Mirai from Class Two healed us."

"Teacher… Mirai?"

The injuries he had before losing consciousness seemed completely gone. Only then did Yuta notice Mirai standing not far away.

"Thank you… Sensei."

Mirai waved his hand dismissively.

"It's nothing. You should deal with Rika's situation first."

Rika!

Yuta suddenly turned around.

The massive cursed spirit floated quietly in the air behind him.

"Yuta… Yuta…"

Seeing him awake, Rika Orimoto called out happily.

"Sorry… for making you wait so long, Ri—"

Yuta's voice stopped abruptly.

His eyes widened in shock.

Rika's enormous body was dissolving into countless golden lights.

As the cursed spirit form dispersed, it revealed the familiar yet unfamiliar figure of a human girl.

"Ri…ka…"

Yuta's body trembled.

His nose stung as he whispered her name.

Tears flowed uncontrollably from his eyes.

He was crying openly.

Mirai walked forward slowly and explained Yuta's lineage.

Upon hearing it, Panda shouted in shock.

"A descendant of Sugawara no Michizane?! A distant relative of Gojo-sensei?!"

"Seriously?!"

Both Panda and Inumaki stared with wide eyes in disbelief.

In her human form, Rika gently hugged the crying Yuta and softly comforted him.

Watching the scene from close by, Mirai's eyes flickered.

If it weren't for the plans he had for the future…

Geto would never have had the chance to make a move.

Suppressing the urge to devour them was truly torment.

Looking at the ruined battlefield and the golden light that had just vanished…

Satoru Gojo, who had teleported there, fell silent for a moment.

From the residual traces of cursed energy, the shattered ruins in front of him had clearly been the battlefield between Geto and Yuta.

Before coming here, Gojo had already found the place where Geto's final trail of blood ended.

The cursed energy there indicated one more person had been present.

"Head of the Zenin clan," Gojo said, lifting his gaze toward Mirai. His azure eyes seemed to swirl with pale mist.

"Would you mind telling me what happened?"

Mirai smiled gently.

"It's nothing serious. Gojo-sensei, are you worried about your students?"

"Don't worry."

"That troublemaker, Suguru Geto…"

Mirai's smile widened slightly.

"I killed him."
