Chapter 39 - Graves

Jack and Aldric walked out of the church. Jack had the cup filled with the holy water that apparently brought good luck.

He looked at Aldric, who wore a white clerical robe.

He looked at it while walking towards the cemetery, which was near the church itself.

Jack looked at the bronze cup. With what I've experienced up until now, I'm inclined to actually believe that this actually brings good luck.

He then looked around the cemetery, which was quite a distance away from the church. It was very large and expansive; it had quite a few new holes dug in it.

Looking at the three points that were rising like tridents from each grave, Jack asked Aldric, who was leading the way and keeping quiet.

"Say... When will they begin to take the corpses and bury them?"

Those corpses nearby already began to rot since yesterday, but now I can't even leave my home or open a window without puking.

Aldric talked without looking back. "Nobody is willing to risk it."

It's the basic of the basic of a society to get rid of its dead, and you tell me you guys are unable to do so? Jack was puzzled, and beyond that, if this kept going, he would have to leave his home for another, thus becoming unable to experiment.

Aldric kept his back to Jack. He pursed his lips and made the face of someone giving bad news to someone. "They are planning to burn them," he said in a reluctant tone.

Cremation? That does seem reasonable. So why is he like this?

Jack spoke, trying to comfort Aldric. "Well, cremation does seem reasonable in this situation. You don't need to worr—" Aldric didn't let him continue as he spoke over him.

"—th the houses." He spoke in a quiet tone before increasing his volume. "They are planning on burning the entire neighborhood."

"..." ...

...Jack's words and thoughts alike were rendered speechless.

He took a little while before he asked another question. "When did you learn of this?"

Aldric spoke. "Yesterday."

You gotta be kidding me. And where will I sleep? Where the fuck will I live? I just arrived in this damn world, and I already lose one of the little advantages I have?

I'm already lucky enough to have what I have and...

"When... When will they... When are they planning on doing this?" Aldric stopped; they had arrived at their destination. He then spoke, "In about a week."

He turned to Jack and pointed with his hand at the graves that had the names of April and Gale written on the middle part of the trident-like grave.

Then he stood there for a while, not speaking. "The place at the church is still available." He tried to speak to Jack, to give him some form of comfort, but he couldn't bring other words apart from "I'll be waiting for your answer at the church."

He slowly walked towards the church, his back to Jack's back.

Jack, seeing the graves and Aldric moving away from him, spoke towards Aldric while trying to not automatically translate the words he spoke. "Have a nice day."

It came out very bad, with a strange accent Jack didn't have originally. Aldric stopped for a moment, not understanding a word of it, but he continued.

He assumed Jack was shaken. He wanted to go find Bren; in his eyes, he was much better at this than he was and would ever be.

After a while, in an empty cemetery, Jack was alone, sitting in front of the two graves with his hands hugging his knees.

He looked at them. For some reason, something was dragging its way up his neck as his eyes were teary.

He spoke in his original language, in the bad accent that made it sound like another language, as he spoke to the graves.

"I woke up in this world, in the body of your dead son."

"Heh... I don't know who is more pitiful, me or you."

"You probably sunk in the ground long before this disease; your little sun eventually followed."

"Only for him to rise again. Only for him to be another one."

"Now all that you worked towards will be burned."

"Now for me? I got lost from my world, and I don't think I will ever be able to return."

"I lost my nightly dreams. I'm now losing what you gave me... A home that I can call my own. And even my own language is slowly being lost."

Jack's eyes became watery as some tears began to show. He quickly wiped his eyes as he moved to drop some holy water on the graves.

A little for each. After that, he poured it on his face to hide the teary eyes he had. "May I be blessed with some good luck."
