The fleet filled the void.
Hundreds of ships. Thousands. The largest armada Ren had ever seen. They stretched across the darkness like a metal continent, their weapons glowing, their shields shimmering. And at their head, twelve figures floating in space without ships, without suits, without any visible means of support.
The Lords of the Twelve Galaxies.
Ren stopped a kilometer from them. Close enough to see their faces. Close enough to feel their power.
They were beautiful and terrible. Each one different. Each one radiating power that made the universe feel small.
The one in the center spoke. A woman? A man? It was impossible to tell. Their voice echoed in Ren's mind, not through space.
So. The prophecy child comes at last.
Ren didn't flinch. "I'm here."
You have your father's soul. All of it. We can feel it inside you. Another Lord spoke. Older. Colder. We felt it when you claimed the final fragment. Like a scream across the universe.
"You killed him. The five of you. But really, all of you. You ordered it."
He was a threat. Threats must be eliminated.
"He was my father."
Irrelevant. He stood against us. He would have destroyed everything we built.
"You built oppression. Fear. Suffering."
Another Lord laughed. It was a horrible sound. Child, we built order. Stability. Without us, the galaxies would tear themselves apart. Billions would die in endless wars. We are not tyrants. We are necessary.
Ren felt his father's presence inside him. Felt the twelve fragments pulse. Felt their combined power waiting to be used.
"You're afraid," he said quietly. "That's what this is really about. You're afraid of losing control. Afraid of change. Afraid of hope."
The Lords shifted. Something flickered in their ancient eyes.
Hope is a weapon, one murmured. The most dangerous weapon of all.
"Yes. It is." Ren raised his hand. The twelve fragments blazed. Light erupted from him, filling the void. "And I'm done being afraid."
The battle began.
Not with weapons. Not with ships. With something deeper.
The Lords attacked his mind. Showed him visions. His mother dying. Aiko betraying him. His father's face, twisted in disappointment. Every fear he'd ever had, made real.
But the fragments protected him. Blue for courage. Purple for endurance. Gold for wisdom. They showed him the truth beneath the visions. The lies.
He pushed back.
His power lashed out, striking the nearest Lord. The being screamed, actually screamed, as the light touched them. Ten thousand years of rule. Ten thousand years of fear. And now, for the first time, pain.
Impossible!
"Nothing's impossible." Ren struck again. Another Lord fell back, wounded.
The fleet opened fire.
Energy bolts screamed toward Ren. Thousands of them. Enough to destroy a planet. He raised his hand, and the fragments shaped a shield. The bolts splashed against it, harmless.
He's too strong!
Together! We must attack together!
The Twelve converged. Their power combined, becoming something massive. Something that could crush stars.
Ren felt it coming. Felt the weight of it. The twelve fragments inside him pulsed, warning him, guiding him.
He didn't dodge. Didn't run.
He met it head-on.
The collision of power was like nothing the universe had ever seen.
Light exploded outward. Ships were thrown back. The fabric of space itself rippled. For a moment, there was only energy and chaos and the scream of forces that shouldn't exist.
And when it cleared, Ren still floated.
The Twelve stared at him. For the first time in ten thousand years, they looked afraid.
"How?" one whispered. "How can you stand against all of us?"
Ren looked at them. At these ancient beings who had ruled through fear for millennia. At the killers of his father. At the oppressors of galaxies.
"Because I'm not alone," he said quietly. "I have my father's courage. My mother's love. My friend's loyalty. I have everyone who believed in me, everyone who sacrificed for me, everyone who hoped."
He raised his hand again.
"And I have something you've never had."
What?
"Hope. Real hope. Not the hope of conquest or control. The hope of something better. Something worth fighting for."
The light around him blazed brighter.
"Now. Leave. Or be destroyed."
The Twelve hesitated.
For a long moment, no one moved. No one spoke. The fleet hung silent. The Lords floated in the void, their ancient faces unreadable.
Then, slowly, one of them lowered their head.
We... we felt it. What you showed us. The love. The sacrifice. The hope. Their voice was different now. Softer. We had forgotten. For ten thousand years, we had forgotten what those felt like.
Another Lord spoke. Power corrupts. We knew this. But we thought... we thought we were different. That we could handle it.
We were wrong.
Ren watched them. The fragments showed him the truth. They weren't lying. For the first time in millennia, they were being honest.
"What now?" he asked.
The first Lord looked at him. Now? Now we go home. We think about what you've shown us. We try to remember who we were before the power took us.
And if we fail? If we return to our old ways?
Ren met their eyes. "Then I'll come back. And next time, I won't offer mercy."
The Lords nodded slowly. One by one, they turned and floated back toward their fleet. The ships began to move, turning away from Ren, heading back toward Imperium.
Within minutes, they were gone.
Ren floated alone in empty space.
He stood on the Starfire's observation deck, watching the stars.
Behind him, the battle was over. The Twelve had retreated. The universe had changed.
Aiko appeared beside him. "So. That happened."
"Yeah."
"You literally fought the twelve most powerful beings in existence and made them cry."
"I wouldn't say cry—"
"I would. I'm saying it." She grinned. "You're insane. You know that?"
Ren smiled slightly. "Maybe."
Sara joined them. Her eyes were wet, but she was smiling.
"Your father would be so proud," she whispered. "Not because you won. Because you showed them mercy. Because you gave them a chance."
"I learned that from you. From him. From everyone who believed in me."
They stood together, looking at the stars. The universe was different now. The Twelve were changed. The prophecy was fulfilled.
But Ren knew this was just the beginning.
There were galaxies to free. People to help. A universe to heal.
And he had twelve fragments, a father's soul, and a family who loved him.
He was ready.
