The Starfire drifted through empty space, far from Imperium, far from the Twelve, far from everything.
Three days had passed since Ren claimed the final fragment. Three days of running. Three days of silence. Three days of everyone on the ship looking at him differently.
He sat in the cargo bay, surrounded by crates and equipment, feeling the twelve fragments pulse inside him. They didn't feel like separate things anymore. They felt like him. Like they'd always been part of him.
The door opened. Sara walked in.
"You've been hiding in here for three days."
"Not hiding. Thinking."
She sat on a crate across from him. In the dim light, she looked older. Tired. The years of running, of worrying, of protecting him had worn her down.
"What are you thinking about?"
"Everything. Dad. The fragments. The Twelve. What comes next." He looked at her. "I can feel him, Mom. Not like before. Not like a separate voice. He's just... part of me now. His memories. His feelings. His love for you."
Sara's eyes glistened. "What does he feel?"
"Everything. He loved you so much. More than anything. More than power. More than victory. More than life." Ren reached out, taking her hand. "He still does. Through me."
Sara cried then. Not the quiet tears she'd always hidden. Real crying. Deep and painful and necessary. Ren held her, letting her grieve, letting her remember.
When she finally stopped, she pulled back and smiled.
"You're so much like him. But also, not." She touched his face. "You have his strength. His courage. But you have my heart. My hope. That's what will save you."
"Save me?"
"When you face the Twelve. When everything seems lost. That hope will carry you through." She stood. "Now come out of this cargo bay. Aiko's worried about you. And Veyna... Veyna deserves to be remembered."
They gathered in the galley that evening.
Aiko had made food. Real food, not replicator stuff. It was actually good. They ate in silence for a while, just being together.
"I can't believe she's gone," Aiko finally said. "Veyna. After everything, she just... walked into certain death."
"She wanted to," Ren said quietly. "She told me. She wanted to do one good thing before the end."
"Did she? Do one good thing?"
"She gave us time. Without that distraction, we'd never have reached the fragment. Never have escaped." He looked at each of them. "She saved us. All of us."
Sara nodded slowly. "I didn't trust her. Didn't like her. But she proved herself in the end. That counts for something."
They were quiet again; each lost in their own thoughts.
Finally, Aiko spoke. "So, what now? We've got all the fragments. Your dad's soul is complete inside you. What's the next step?"
Ren had been thinking about this. The fragments showed him possibilities. Paths forward. None of them were easy.
"The Twelve know about me now. They felt the fragment being claimed. They know where I am. Or at least, they know the general direction." He pulled up a holographic display. "We have maybe a week before they find us. Maybe less."
"A week?" Sara's face paled. "That's not enough time."
"It's enough. We're not running anymore."
Aiko stared at him. "You want to fight them? All twelve? At once?"
"I want to end this. One way or another." He looked at his friends. His family. "You don't have to come. This isn't your fight."
"Don't." Aiko's voice was sharp. "Don't do that. Don't try to push us away. We're in this together. All of us."
Sara nodded. "She's right. We've come this far together. We're not stopping now."
Ren felt something warm in his chest. Not a fragment. Something else. Love. Gratitude. Hope.
"Okay," he said quietly. "Together."
The next few days were spent preparing.
Aiko worked on the ship, upgrading weapons, reinforcing shields, making sure the Starfire could survive a battle. Sara studied tactical data, looking for weaknesses in the Twelve's defenses. Ren meditated, letting the fragments guide him, showing him what he needed to know.
On the fifth day, he gathered them in the cockpit.
"They're coming."
Sara's hands tightened on the controls. "How long?"
"Hours. Maybe less. A fleet. Larger than anything we've faced."
"Can we run?"
"No. They'd catch us. And I'm tired of running." He looked at the viewscreen. At the stars. At the darkness where his enemies approached. "We fight here. In this system. Empty space. No innocent lives at risk."
Aiko swallowed hard. "That's... that's a big fight."
"The biggest." Ren stood. "But I'm not alone. I have you. I have Dad. I have everything I need."
He walked to the airlock.
"Where are you going?" Sara asked.
"To wait. To prepare. To greet them when they arrive."
He stepped through the airlock and into space.
Outside the ship, without a suit, without protection, Ren floated.
The fragments protected him. Wrapped him in energy. Let him breathe. Let him exist in the void.
He looked at the stars. At the darkness where the Twelve's fleet would appear. At the place where his destiny waited.
Nervous?
His father's voice. Part of him now. Always there.
"Terrified."
Good. Fear keeps you alive. Use it.
"How do I defeat them? Twelve beings who've ruled for ten thousand years?"
You don't defeat them. You change them. You show them something they've never seen.
"What's that?"
Hope. Real hope. Not the kind that comes from power or victory. The kind that comes from love. From sacrifice. From believing that things can be better.
Ren thought about that. About all the people who'd brought him here. His mother, who'd protected him for seventeen years. Aiko, who'd chosen to follow him into danger. Veyna, who'd given her life to give him time. His father, who'd sacrificed everything so he could live.
"I think I understand."
Good. Then you're ready.
The stars ahead flickered.
Ships dropped out of warp. Dozens. Hundreds. The Twelve's fleet. Massive. Terrifying. Beautiful.
And at its head, twelve figures. The Lords of the Twelve Galaxies.
Ren floated toward them.
