Loreen's POV
Then someone else, Loreen did not catch who, said it louder.
"You married a man." Not gentle this time. "That is forbidden. It is against the law. It is not possible."
"It happened," Loreen said simply.
"It cannot be recognised," Carthen said. He had found his voice and it was louder than usual and considerably less controlled. "A marriage of this nature has no legal standing. The old law is clear on this. It has always been clear."
"The signed marriage bond," the king repeated, and this time his voice carried enough weight that the room quieted around it, "is currently held in the high temple. If anyone in this room doubts that the ceremony took place, like I said earlier, you are welcome to go and look at it yourselves."
"The high priest conducted this?" Huron said. He looked genuinely thrown. It was perhaps the most honest expression Loreen had seen from him all day.
