Chapter 27 - Closer Than Before

Some distances don't end with words.

They end with presence.

With staying.

With not letting go.

Abhi and Swati

The campus felt quieter that evening.

Classes were over.

Practice was done.

But neither of them left.

Abhi sat on the steps.

Waiting.

Not for long.

Because she came.

Swati.

Without being called.

Without hesitation.

"You didn't go home?" she asked.

Abhi looked up at her.

"Didn't feel like it."

She sat beside him.

Closer than before.

Not too close.

But not distant either.

A comfortable space.

For a few minutes—

no one spoke.

And yet—

it didn't feel empty.

"You've been quiet," Swati said softly.

Abhi smiled slightly.

"I was thinking."

"About?"

He looked at her.

Honest.

"Us."

That word—

made her pause.

Not uncomfortable.

Just aware.

"What about us?" she asked.

Abhi took a breath.

"I don't want things to go back to how they were before."

Her eyes softened.

"They won't."

Simple answer.

But strong.

He looked at her again.

"Promise?"

She didn't reply immediately.

Instead—

she slowly placed her hand over his.

Not tight.

Not dramatic.

Just there.

"I'm here, aren't I?" she said.

That was her answer.

And it was enough.

Abhi didn't say anything.

He just held that moment.

Because for the first time—

he didn't feel like he was losing her.

He felt like he was finally getting her back.

Aditi and Lavesh

"Can we talk?"

Aditi's voice was serious.

No attitude.

No teasing.

Lavesh nodded.

They stood away from everyone.

A little distance.

But not too far.

"That day…" she started.

He didn't interrupt.

She looked at him.

Confused.

"I don't understand what's happening."

He stayed calm.

"Then don't force it."

She frowned slightly.

"How can I not think about it?"

A pause.

Then he said quietly—

"Because I've been thinking about it for years."

That line—

stopped everything.

Aditi blinked.

"Years?"

He nodded.

No smile.

No joke.

Just truth.

"I didn't say it before. I wasn't ready."

He looked at her—

directly.

"But I am now."

Silence.

Heavy.

Real.

For the first time—

Aditi didn't have a reply.

Because this wasn't their usual story anymore.

Ayush and Poonam

Poonam stood alone for a moment.

Looking at nothing.

Thinking about everything.

Ayush walked toward her.

Slowly.

This time—

no rush.

No pressure.

"I didn't mean to make things awkward," he said.

His voice calm.

Not desperate.

She looked at him.

"You didn't…"

A pause.

"I just… didn't expect it."

He nodded.

"I know."

Silence again.

But not uncomfortable.

Different.

Poonam looked at him again.

Properly this time.

Not as just a friend.

But as someone…

who felt something real for her.

"I need time," she said softly.

Ayush smiled faintly.

"Take it."

And for the first time—

it didn't feel like distance.

It felt like a beginning.

Priyanka and Aditya

"You're staring again," Priyanka said.

Aditya looked away.

"I'm observing."

She laughed.

"Same thing."

They watched everyone.

All the confusion.

All the emotions.

"Feels like a movie," she said.

Aditya smirked.

"Yeah… but we're the only stable ones."

She nudged him.

"Don't be overconfident."

He leaned slightly closer.

"At least I said what I felt."

She smiled.

"Good thing you did."

Their fingers brushed.

And stayed.

Simple.

Easy.

Real.

Ending Scene

The sun was setting again.

Same place.

Same people.

But something had shifted.

Abhi and Swati sat together—

closer than ever.

Not saying everything.

But feeling it.

Aditi stood still—

thinking about a truth she never expected.

Lavesh watched her—

not hiding anymore.

Ayush stepped back—

but not away.

And Poonam—

stood between confusion and something new.

Because sometimes—

love doesn't start with a confession.

It starts with staying.

And today—

they all chose to stay.
