Upon arriving at the bustling port of Vermilion City, Ash and his companions headed straight for the local Pokémon Center, intending to let their Pokémon recover to peak condition before challenging the Gym.
However, the moment they stepped inside, they were met with an unusually somber atmosphere. The lobby was more crowded than usual with waiting trainers, and many of their Pokémon bore visible scorch marks,
looking weak and listless. Nurse Joy and her Chansey were scurrying back and forth between patients, their faces etched with exhaustion and a touch of helplessness.
"What... what happened here? Why are there so many injured Pokémon?" Misty asked, her voice filled with surprise.
A trainer sitting nearby answered dejectedly, "It was Lt. Surge, the Leader of the Vermilion Gym... His Electric-type Pokémon are just too powerful, and his fighting style is... well, it's brutal. He shows absolutely no mercy."
Another trainer, cradling an injured Sandshrew, added piteously, "My Sandshrew was just a second too slow, and his Raichu blasted it with a Thunderbolt... Sigh."
Ash watched the scene, his brow furrowed in a deep scowl.
Through his Aura, he could clearly sense the pain radiating from the Pokémon and the crushing frustration of their trainers. This was a jarring contrast to the atmosphere he had experienced at the Pewter Gym and Cerulean Gym, where the battles were meant to be tests of skill and opportunities for guidance.
Brock's expression was equally grim. "It seems Lt. Surge treats Gym battles like actual military engagements."
"That's going way too far!" Misty cried out indignantly. "Aren't Gym battles supposed to test a trainer's strength and provide guidance? How can he just hurt them like this?"
Ash remained silent for a moment, but his eyes grew increasingly determined.
He walked up to Nurse Joy and handed over his Poké Balls. "Nurse Joy, please. I need my Pokémon restored to their best."
Nurse Joy looked at Ash and offered a kind warning. "Are you planning to challenge the Vermilion Gym as well? Please, be very careful. Lt. Surge is... incredibly powerful."
"Thank you for the warning, Nurse Joy," Ash nodded. "But that's exactly why I have to challenge him. I'm going to show him that true strength isn't built on the reckless suffering of your opponents."
His voice wasn't loud, but it carried an undeniable weight that caused several of the dejected trainers in the lobby to look up at him.
Once his team was fully recovered, the group headed to the Vermilion Gym. The interior was heavily metallic, resembling a combat arena more than a training hall, with electric fences decorating the walls. The air was thick with tension.
"Wow, this place feels... intense," Misty remarked.
"It's going to be a tough fight," Brock added, feeling the pressure.
Just then, a towering man dressed in a flight jacket with short, blonde hair stepped out. His presence was overwhelming. This was Lt. Surge. A massive, muscular Raichu followed at his side, its gaze fierce and predatory.
"Oh? New challengers?" Surge's booming voice carried a hint of contempt. "Did you see those losers back at the Pokémon Center? That is the fate of anyone who dares challenge my Vermilion Gym! The rules are one-on-one. Beat my Raichu, and the Thunder Badge is yours! Though, looking at that Pikachu of yours, I doubt it'll last a minute!"
Surge's arrogance, combined with the suffering Ash had witnessed earlier, completely ignited his anger.
However, he forced himself to stay calm, stepping forward with a steady gaze. "I am Ash Ketchum from Pallet Town. Lt. Surge, the point of a Gym battle is to guide a trainer's growth, not to flaunt raw power or maim Pokémon. Today, my Pikachu and I are going to prove that to you."
"Hmph, you've got a big mouth! Put your money where it is!" Surge scoffed.
"Pikachu, this battle is about more than just a badge!" Ash sent Pikachu into the arena.
"Pika!" Pikachu leaped onto the field, its expression more serious than ever before. It could feel its trainer's resolve.
"Ash, his Raichu is an evolved form. Its electrical power will be massive. Be careful," Brock warned.
Ash nodded. "Pikachu, this is it! Give it everything you've got!"
"Pika!" Pikachu stared sharply at the Raichu across the field.
"A Pikachu? Interesting. You actually came to challenge me without evolving it?" Surge cocked an eyebrow. "Raichu, show this little guy the power of evolution! Use Thunder Shock!"
Raichu unleashed a violent surge of electricity that lunged straight for Pikachu.
"Pikachu, don't take it head-on! Use Quick Attack to dodge!" Ash commanded.
Pikachu instantly transformed into a blur of yellow lightning, easily evading the blast.
"Oh? Fast, aren't you? Raichu, use Body Slam!"
Raichu's massive frame launched into the air, aiming to crush Pikachu under its weight.
"Double Team!" Ash countered calmly.
Multiple copies of Pikachu instantly materialized across the field. Raichu's Body Slam crashed into the hard floor, hitting nothing but air.
"Tch, cheap tricks! Raichu, use Thunder for a wide-area attack!" Surge attempted to clear the clones with a massive AoE strike.
"Pikachu, get behind him! Use Iron Tail!" Ash's command was precise and swift.
The real Pikachu used its superior speed to circle around the back of the massive Pokémon. With a sudden spin, its tail glowed with a metallic sheen and slammed into Raichu's back!
"What?!" Both Surge and Raichu were stunned. They hadn't expected the Pikachu to possess such physical power.
Raichu shrieked in pain, turning around to glare at Pikachu with newfound fury.
"Pikachu, keep using Quick Attack to maneuver! Don't give it a chance to lock onto you!" Ash adopted a hit-and-run strategy.
Using its vastly superior speed and agility, Pikachu zipped across the arena. It struck with Quick Attack, followed up with a surprise Iron Tail, and used Double Team whenever Raichu tried to pin it down.
Despite its massive power, Raichu was like a boxer swinging at smoke. It was being run in circles, left panting and exhausted.
"Damn it! You little brat, is all you know how to do is hide?!" Surge was losing his patience.
"Battles aren't just about who has more muscle," Ash smiled slightly. "Pikachu, that's enough. Let's show him what we're really made of! Use Thunderbolt!"
Pikachu skidded to a halt and began condensing its electricity. A massive bolt of Thunderbolt shot toward Raichu!
"Useless! Raichu, use Thunderbolt too!" Surge roared. He firmly believed that an evolved Raichu would always crush a Pikachu in a direct clash of power.
Two massive currents of electricity collided in mid-air! To Surge's utter shock, Pikachu's Thunderbolt didn't give an inch; in fact, it seemed to be gaining ground. Golden light clashed with orange sparks, creating a deafening roar that shook the Gym.
"How is this possible?! How can a Pikachu's output rival my Raichu?" Surge gasped.
Ash's lips curled into a confident grin. He knew this was the result of Pikachu's latent potential, their grueling training, and the long-term nourishing effects of the Light Ball!
"Pikachu, now! Unleash everything!" Ash shouted.
"Pika CHUUUUU!!!" Pikachu erupted with a brilliant, blinding radiance. The power of its Thunderbolt surged exponentially, instantly overwhelming Raichu's current and slamming into the larger Pokémon with the force of a falling star!
"Raichu!!" Surge cried out.
Raichu was swallowed by the massive discharge. It let out a pained cry before collapsing to the ground, charred and smoking. It was completely knocked out.
Silence fell over the Gym.
Surge stared in disbelief at his fallen Raichu, then looked at Pikachu, who was huffing for breath but still standing tall.
"...Unbelievable." Surge took a deep breath and walked into the center of the field. He recalled his Raichu and then solemnly held out a bronze-colored badge toward Ash. "You won, Ash. You and your Pikachu... you're special. You've earned this Thunder Badge. I accept this defeat completely."
Ash took the badge, feeling its heavy weight in his palm. "Thank you, Lt. Surge. That was a great battle."
Pikachu leaped back onto Ash's shoulder, nuzzling his cheek affectionately.
Ash looked at Surge and said seriously, "Lt. Surge, do you see now? Power can be used to suppress, but it can also be used to protect and to win respect. Your Raichu is strong, but if you put more thought into your opponents, you might become even stronger and much more respected."
[Ding! The host has defeated Vermilion Gym Leader Lt. Surge. Obtained: Thunder Badge. Reward: 400 World Origin Points.]
[Ding! The host has used a direct combat style to make Lt. Surge reflect on his philosophy. Reward: 200 World Origin Points.]
[Current World Origin Points: 7600.]
As Ash held the badge, he felt he had gained more than just a victory; he had quietly changed a Leader's understanding of what it meant to be "strong."
As they left the Gym, Ash looked toward the Pokémon Center, hoping there would be fewer injured Pokémon there in the future.
Since I didn't use the game settings this time, Surge isn't really a villain just extremely harsh.
