Chapter 40: Beasts and Resources
The Deep Forest was no longer quiet.
Alicia noticed it almost immediately.
Ever since the first batch of spiritual herbs formed, the forest had changed. Not in structure—but in behavior.
Beasts were moving differently.
More frequently.
More deliberately.
"…So it begins," Alicia muttered.
She focused on one of the larger herb clusters—where Spirit Dew Grass and Red Root Moss had grown denser after her Life Manipulation.
At first, only small creatures approached.
They sniffed.
Waited.
Left.
But that didn't last long.
A mid-sized predator arrived next. It circled the area slowly, watching everything. Not attacking. Just… claiming.
Alicia narrowed her awareness.
"…You're not even eating it."
The beast wasn't interested in the herb itself.
It was interested in the location.
That told her everything she needed to know.
This wasn't about food.
It was about territory with value.
Within a short time, more beasts began appearing near similar zones. Not all at once—but enough to form a pattern.
Areas with:
higher Life Energy
forming resources
stable Spiritual Vein flow
were becoming contested zones.
And unlike before, the beasts weren't just passing through.
They were staying.
Watching.
Guarding.
Alicia observed silently for a while.
Then said:
"…Alright. So herbs create hotspots."
That made sense.
And it matched what she had already learned:
Life Energy improves regions → regions produce resources → resources attract life
Which led to:
competition
Alicia kept watching.
At one cluster, two beasts finally met.
A lean predator and a heavier, horned creature.
They didn't attack immediately.
They circled.
Slow. Careful. Testing.
Then the predator lunged.
The clash was quick.
No dramatic explosion. No overwhelming strength.
Just raw instinct.
The horned beast held its ground, forcing the predator back. After a short exchange, the predator retreated.
Not defeated.
Just… unwilling to risk more.
Alicia watched the outcome and nodded slightly.
"…Good."
Because that was exactly how it should be.
Not every fight needed a winner.
Sometimes, survival was enough.
And that kind of balance kept the ecosystem stable.
She expanded her awareness across the forest.
The same pattern repeated in multiple areas:
weaker beasts avoided resource zones
mid-level beasts competed for them
stronger ones controlled space without constant fighting
It wasn't chaos.
It was structure.
Primitive, but functional.
Alicia leaned back mentally.
"…This is actually working."
Because she didn't want a battlefield.
She wanted a self-sustaining system.
And this was close.
Then she noticed something else.
The herbs she had accelerated earlier were now growing at a stable pace again.
No collapse.
No instability.
She checked their status.
Everything looked normal.
That confirmed another point:
Controlled Life Manipulation works. Overuse would not.
"…So I can boost growth," Alicia said, "but I shouldn't carry it."
That was fine.
It meant her role wasn't to replace natural development.
Just guide it.
She glanced toward the Central River Plains and Highlands.
No resources yet.
Less Life Energy.
Less activity.
"…Makes sense."
If she wanted those regions to develop the same way, she needed:
more Life Energy flow
more time
or better distribution
That gave her a clear direction.
Back in the forest, the situation continued to evolve.
One herb cluster now had three different species rotating around it.
None fully claiming it.
But none leaving it alone either.
That created constant pressure.
And under that pressure—
the environment adapted.
Plants grew slightly faster.
Beasts moved more efficiently.
Energy circulated more actively.
Alicia noticed the change and paused.
"…Pressure increases growth."
She stored that thought.
It might matter later.
Then her attention shifted.
The silver fox had returned.
Of course it had.
It stood near one of the herb clusters, watching everything.
Not rushing in.
Not fighting.
Just observing.
Alicia stared at it.
"…You again."
The fox waited until two smaller beasts moved away.
Then stepped forward and calmly bit off a small portion of Spirit Dew Grass.
No rush.
No panic.
Just precise timing.
Then it left.
Alicia watched the whole thing.
"…Efficient."
That was the word.
Not stronger.
Not special.
Just… efficient.
That was acceptable.
She pulled her awareness back and looked at the entire forest.
This time, she didn't focus on individual beasts.
She looked at the system as a whole.
And for the first time—
it felt connected.
Life Energy flowed through the World Seed
Spiritual Veins distributed it
Regions adapted
Resources formed
Beasts responded
Competition shaped behavior
A complete loop.
Not perfect.
But real.
Alicia stayed quiet for a moment.
Then said:
"…Alright."
"This is starting to look like a real cultivation world."
A system notification appeared.
Ding!
[Regional Progress Update]
Deep Forest
Resource zones stabilized
Beast territorial behavior established
Ecosystem pressure increasing
Result:
Natural development speed slightly increased
Alicia read it once.
Then nodded.
No big rewards.
No flashy upgrades.
Just confirmation.
That was fine.
Better, actually.
Because it meant the world was progressing on its own.
She shifted her focus outward again.
To the plains.
To the highlands.
To the ocean.
All of them still behind.
But not stagnant.
Just waiting.
Alicia smiled slightly.
"…Then let's keep going."
