5-12-May-1918

''Stop… resisting, you socialist shit'' Ernst said, beating one of the union leaders we had attacked in his safe house with a baton.

The sound of blows and the subject's screams of pain could be heard throughout the house while my men were handcuffing and capturing everyone inside.

The information that Abteilung IIIB had forced out of the kidnapped men had been vital to begin cutting out the problem of the wildcat strikes that was striking German military factories at the root.

That had begun by giving us the addresses of the safe houses these men used, and how they hid and where they hid when they felt the police were close to them.

That had set the mechanism in motion to end this, beginning to carry out raids against the safe houses, this time with the help of the Prussian secret police and the conventional police, where the inciters of the protests were captured and interrogated under legal frameworks, no longer having to use the Abteilung and its interrogation models that led subjects to disappear.

''With this, we already have 8 houses finished, so I suppose we cannot stop. We have to follow the trail before they realize what is happening with the others'' I said, placing my hands in the pockets of my coat and observing the house where the anti-war socialists resided.

''Karl, come see what these idiots had'' one of my men said, coming out of a room and drawing my attention.

''What is it?'' I said while still hearing the screams of the one Ernst was beating.

When I entered the room, I saw that one of my men had torn up part of the wooden floor, and there were Gewehr 98 rifles hidden beneath it. One of my men was taking them out one by one and leaving them at my feet.

''Sons of bitches…'' I said, widening my eyes when I saw that there were several dozen rifles hidden there with some ammunition.

''This is serious…'' one of the members of the secret police said, only murmuring those words.

''We have to recheck those safe houses and see if there were secret caches like this. They may have more weapons. This cannot be a small coincidence. The state armament production factories must be placed under surveillance, because workers may be smuggling those weapons somehow'' I said, observing the weapons while crouching down.

''And what makes you think those weapons are being smuggled? Good security measures are taken to prevent what you are saying. The state factories are the most secure when it comes to production'' the member of the secret police said, looking annoyed by my deduction.

''Look at the weapon, you blind fool. It is new, recently manufactured, fresh from the production line. It is clear they are obtaining them directly from the production lines and not through some smuggling method. Besides, I see no flaw in its production, so it cannot be some clandestine workshop making copies of the weapon'' I said, observing the weapon and showing it while checking its compartments, noticing that everything was new, with no trace of use at all.

''Shit. I will coordinate with the police and we will immediately begin investigating whether there are shortages in production, because… well, we have not received information from the factories about any mistake'' the secret policeman said, thinking about what to do.

''That makes it look even worse… someone must be painting the numbers so everything matches, so they have someone with that kind of power among their ranks'' I said, looking at the policeman, as did my men.

The policeman opened his mouth and raised a finger, then closed his mouth and almost ran out of the house.

''Great… they do not only organize protests, they also steal weapons, for what? Some kind of coup d'état?'' Alexander asked while crouching beside me to observe the rifles we had obtained more closely.

''It has something to do with that, but I am surprised they are doing it. Although luckily, this is something very good'' I said, nodding, leaving the weapon on the floor while standing again and putting my hands in my pockets.

''What do you mean, good?'' Alexander asked, raising his eyebrows at my answer.

''This is now an anti-government organization, not just socialists seeking labor improvements… traitors. We only have to deliver this information to a judge and have him declare the organizations subversive, and we will have all the legality we need to sweep them away without the slightest concern for society's opinion, since it will be on our side if such conclusive evidence is shown'' I said, walking outside.

Moving toward the exit of the house, I found the several members of this group handcuffed, gathered in front of the police officers, waiting for vehicles to arrive to transport them to the police stations.

''Good, gentlemen, good work, but we are taking these men. We have to make sure we know everything that is happening with that weapons plan'' I said, walking among the policemen, signaling to my men to load them into the trucks.

''Hey… wait, they are under our jurisdiction. If you want anything with them, it will have to be through an order. You cannot simply take them'' said a captain of the Berlin police, who stepped in front of my men.

''It seems you do not understand… I am not asking you. I am going to do it, and if you keep refusing, I am going to take you as well as a possible collaborator to the Abteilung IIIB barracks to be interrogated'' I said, walking slowly in front of the police captain, who slowly raised his chin as I approached to maintain eye contact.

The policeman opened his mouth twice, but the words did not come out, and the other policemen stayed watching us, bringing their hands to their holsters.

''Load them now. We have to get the information out of them as soon as possible'' I said to my men, who quickly loaded the prisoners into the trucks while they shouted at the policemen, begging them not to let us take them.

The police captain put his hands in his coat and withdrew with his men to gather, only staying there watching while the secret police and we disappeared through the streets of Berlin.

Returning to the Abteilung IIIB barracks, we handed over the captured men so they could be interrogated by Walter's men and so everything necessary could be prepared to discover how these socialists were arming themselves.

This immediately set off every alarm in the government over the possibility of an armed attempt to seize power.

Within minutes, the judges gave us all the powers necessary to put this out. What had taken the police months to prepare, it seemed that the game had finally ended for those socialists, although we still had to see what we would do with them.

''You do not know the scandal you have just opened, Oberst Karl. We have a lot of work to do now, which greatly limits my actions to continue preparing the gathering of information from our enemies, especially while the war is still moving forward'' Walter said while reviewing some reports about what had been extracted from the interrogation.

''It is completely necessary. Can you imagine what could have happened if that armed popular uprising had taken place while Germany had all its armies occupied in the spring offensive and the later summer offensive? We have to corner the leaders and make sure they cannot sabotage the war effort anymore'' I said, staring fixedly at Walter, although he was not paying much attention to me.

''Yes, I know. Now that this has become my work, this has become a matter of national security, so it only concerns the secret police and Abteilung IIIB. We will have to take every measure necessary to finish them off, although we already have some good news about something'' Walter said with a slight smile after finishing reviewing the reports and looking at me.

''What is the good news in all this? We have judicial permits to destroy the socialist organizations, although we will have to show results. I doubt they will authorize us to attack every socialist group complaining about working conditions, since it is only a matter of time before a judge realizes they gave us powers that are far too broad'' I said, crossing my arms while tilting my head.

''Karl Liebknecht. If the name does not sound familiar to you, he is one of the leaders of these men. Our interrogations agree that he is a leader of the movement seeking to sabotage and at the same time impose a socialist republic. We have him captured. In fact, as we speak, I have requested that he be transferred from his cell to our barracks, so we are going to have a very interesting conversation before his execution order for treason is approved'' Walter said, forming a smile while showing me the documents approving the prisoner's transfer.

''A woman was also named, but only once, so I may also request that she be brought to me. But it is only a matter of time before I discover where they are hiding and who was stealing the weapons from the German factories'' Walter added, staring fixedly at me.

''Quite the problem we have on our hands. Well, then we will have to work. Give me the information you have and I will make sure my men check every location necessary, so I will begin preparing the equipment'' I said, nodding and beginning to leave the Abteilung IIIB barracks.

A few days passed where I was frequently informed of what was happening at the front, and the information I managed to obtain was that Paris was encircled by German forces. It was only a matter of time before Paris is captured after a successful siege.

Although it was also being heard that American troops were arriving in massive numbers to replace the losses our enemies had suffered, mostly trying to reinforce the French positions that were falling apart.

Although numerical superiority remained on the side of our forces, the Americans kept sending hundreds of thousands of men every week, so we had to see how many troops the Americans would send.

At the same time, our work in the capital had begun. Although at first we had to finish off the wildcat strikes, now we had the task of destroying the rebel cell of the Spartakusbund.

And that had led to the mobilization of the Prussian secret police and my forces throughout the city, with the help of the police, to try to cover the large dimensions of the areas we had to investigate.

Since we had to investigate workers, thinkers, politicians and factory foremen, searching their homes and sometimes carrying out the occasional fight inside the city, although I did not have the freedom to use explosives to clear residences.

Because, although these possible rebels presented a serious danger, we could not apply every necessary measure while in Berlin, since they also wanted this to remain as quiet as possible.

Although on some occasions that could not be done, since there were groups that entrenched themselves with their weapons to avoid being captured alive. In addition, that had also spread to many socialist politicians who came under investigation.

But that kept me busy for quite some time, reviewing every possible person involved, working side by side with Walter to continue the work of capturing all the bastards.

And that slowly led to thousands of arrests inside the city, since slowly their house of cards began to collapse once we found those who had falsified the books of the military factories to hide the missing weapons.

In addition to munitions factories that were also hiding some stocks of ammunition to supply their uprising.

The more information we discovered, the more this began to spread rapidly into the surrounding areas, since it did not take long before searches began throughout the country for those involved in this popular uprising.

And that was generating quite a lot of internal pressure in Germany, since the police now had to act harshly against the union leaders to try to end this.
