14-27-April-1918
''Richard Müller. That is the subject at the top of our list, Oberst Karl. The man is slippery. He has been conscripted three times to go to the front and, if possible, end up dead, but on all three occasions he managed to escape and return to Berlin by his own means, which indicates that he has large operational networks we have to deal with. According to some of our informants inside the unions, they are planning several wildcat strikes, although much of the information is still unconfirmed'' said one of the members of the Preußische Geheimpolizei.
''Yes, the Abteilung has a lot of information on the man, in addition to some photos from when he was conscripted, but currently his whereabouts are unknown even to members of imperial intelligence, so we will have to look for his trusted men to see if we can get the information out of them'' I said, observing all the documentation gathered by the Prussian secret police.
''The problem is that they are all very discreet. They are not gathered together and only appear in some factories to generate those surprise strikes that make the day's production disappear among all the workers who do not stop asking for wage improvements and safety'' said the Berlin police chief.
''Which are completely valid complaints. Nobody wants to die working or for what he breaks his back earning to not be enough to have a decent life. Is it feasible for the factory owners to try to concede something to the demands? It could be a much faster route if we try to win over the workers'' I said, running my gloved hand over my chin.
When I realized it, all the members of the Preußische Geheimpolizei were staring at me as if I were some kind of strange bug because of my proposal, since all of them had raised eyebrows.
''The State has not the slightest intention of yielding to the workers' petitions. The war does not allow those increases or the time to stop work to make the improvements they request'' said one of the members of the secret police, who began making grimaces with his mouth.
''And many of the private owners of the military industry do not have anything of the sort in their plans, since most of them do not want to yield to anything for the moment until the war ends, so I fear nothing will be feasible unless it is absolutely necessary for the owners and the State'' said the police chief in Berlin.
''Good, then I will see what can be done to catch that man, because unless we act outside the law, I see little chance of getting him out of Berlin, since I assume he and his followers must be moving all the time to avoid being captured again. So we will have to increase surveillance in some areas of the industrial belt. Is there any property that is currently empty that can be used to watch the steel and ammunition industrial centers?'' I asked, looking at the map of Berlin.
''We can ask the owners to see if there is something like what you are requesting, but for the moment we will try to see what can be done to deal with the problems in the way you have indicated'' he said, tilting his head while thinking about what to do.
Without saying another word and faced with the silence of the other members of the Prussian secret police, I left their headquarters and quickly went to my men to try to do something.
I did not have much money, but surely they could negotiate something with them. It was much easier to try to put out the fire by negotiating some simple improvements than simply refusing negotiation entirely.
While organizing the patrols near the factories, I decided to ask that a message be sent among the workers.
This time, when we stopped at factories that were in the middle of a quick strike, we told them to tell their union leaders to meet with me in a house in Berlin's industrial sector and that I promised nothing would happen to them if they attended.
Giving it almost three days for the message to spread, I went with a small group of men to the address I had indicated, trying to see if a negotiation with the union leaders who were hiding was feasible.
But when the day and hour I had indicated arrived, there was only me and four of my trusted men in the building and around it, with no one approaching the area.
''I told you, Karl. Socialists only seek to create problems so they can have power. The moment one tries to negotiate with them, they hide, because without problems they cannot offer the solution'' Ernst said, looking out the window.
I looked at the clock and 45 minutes had already passed since the time I had offered the union leaders to appear, but no one had even shown themselves to check whether my offer was real, so it seemed my attempt to negotiate had completely failed.
''Good, yes, it seems we wasted our time doing this…'' I said, standing up while looking at my men.
''A stupidity, honestly. Better to use that bit of money you had left to pay someone to reveal where those leaders are'' Ernst said, taking his rifle and placing it on his shoulder.
''We will see what we do, because we do not even know if it will be useful to pay people to talk if they feed us false information. That will only put them on alert, but I have some ideas about what we could do to capture those leaders'' I said, looking outside and opening the door.
Since there was no one there, we simply climbed into the vehicle and left the place to return to our guard duties.
With the negotiation attempt failed, the only thing left was the attempt to be more aggressive and much smarter to capture someone who moved a lot.
We had to detect his pattern, and the only pattern that was clear was that the union leaders of the wildcat strikes had to attend the factories to inflame tempers, so we had to focus our operations on those areas.
But clearly we could not be there in our uniforms, since we would draw everyone's attention, especially with our vehicles, so we simply began imitating the clothes used by factory workers, buying clothing and making the modifications necessary so my men could infiltrate the workers' neighborhoods, in addition to being able to pass unnoticed inside the factories.
Positioning many radio posts in Berlin's industrial zone to begin several investigation and information-gathering cells.
Although this clearly made us lose days of preparation and of getting men on the ground, we began detecting more and more of the patterns of those union leaders, to the point that we had begun to predict when one would arrive based on the information collected over ten days of work putting down protests.
With a mask and hat covering my face and wearing the clothes of any ordinary worker, I was entering what was one of the state munitions factories, since according to what we had estimated, it was likely that some member of the unionists would try to stir up tempers.
We did not know in which factory, only that we noticed the pattern repeating every 3 or 4 days, where someone tried to create some quick strike, so we dedicated ourselves to preparing.
So I had inserted many of my men into the area, trying to see if we could capture one of them to interrogate him and force out the information we were looking for.
At that moment, we tried to look busy so as not to stand out too much while ammunition boxes were moved to the warehouses as they were finished.
When I finally saw someone enter, followed by several men.
Observing them closely by their clothes, they seemed to be workers, although their clothes were cleaner and they did not have the work stains that, for example, our disguises did have.
With a whistle, he drew the workers' attention and began climbing onto some boxes to call attention to himself.
From one moment to the next, my men and I exchanged glances and quickly approached the crowd of workers who were listening to the union leader.
''You are tired of this senseless war, of this war that kills our sons, of this war that enslaves us in factories with long work hours. If the answer is yes, then… aaaaaaaaaaaahgg!'' said the union leader until, using a metal bar, I struck him in the calf so hard that I think I broke something.
The man fell from his improvised podium, clutching his leg, and those who seemed to be his bodyguards and were with him were quickly brutally beaten by my men after they sucker punched them while they tried to stop me.
Grabbing the man by his clothes, I punched him in the mouth and then in the nose, where he quickly began to bleed while trying to struggle a little so I would let him go.
But after two more punches to the face and seeing how he began bleeding from the mouth after I split his lip, the man stopped fighting with such force.
Finally, I slammed his head against the boxes where he had been standing until the man offered no resistance at all.
Seeing that the workers were not getting involved in anything, since there were several of us covering one another, we took these subjects and, before leaving, threw pamphlets with communist propaganda and claims that the socialists were simply traitors to the workers' struggle for sitting down to negotiate with the capitalists.
That was only so the blame would not fall directly on the Prussian secret police, since the first mission was to prevent anyone from being able to point directly to one of these situations as the work of the State.
Since that could lead to massive protests, blaming other political groups was the best idea one could have.
So, taking the subjects and gagging them, we escaped the place, leaving some men behind to block our escape while trying to get them away from curious eyes as we carried the captured men.
Putting them in one of our safe houses, we stuffed them into sacks while tying them tightly and making sure they could not shout through the gags. We loaded them into one of the food transport trucks, where we hid them, and began moving through the city until we reached another safe house, where we loaded them into another truck. Finally, we headed to the Abteilung IIIB barracks.
Since the Prussian police were not exactly trustworthy for this act, as I did not know what they would do if I handed them a union chief in these conditions, but I knew Walter would not deny me the chance to begin the interrogation.
So we headed to the Abteilung IIIB operation zone in Berlin.
''Who the hell are you? This area is restricted to civilians'' one of the entrance guards roared.
''Call Walter. Tell him we have work for him'' I said, leaning out the truck window.
''The Devil of Masuria'' one of the guards said, pointing at me.
''At your orders, Oberst'' the guard said, not trying to stop us, and they opened the gates to let us pass.
Taking out the cargo, I quickly entered the building and met Walter, who seemed to have come to receive me.
''I need you to interrogate someone'' I said, throwing the sack onto the floor, along with several others.
''I know I should not, but who do I have to interrogate?'' Walter asked, running a hand over the bridge of his nose.
''I do not know. I only know he is one of those who call wildcat strikes, so I need you to get out of him where they hide so we can keep searching'' I said, turning my head a little.
Walter sighed audibly. ''Take them to the back room. I will see what I can get out of them.''
Walter's men took the captured men and carried them away. I do not know what the hell happened, but several hours passed in waiting and, from time to time, agonized screams broke the silence.
When I heard a door open, a loud sob was heard, along with someone audibly panting.
Walter soon appeared, wiping blood from his hands with a piece of cloth.
''It took some effort, but I have some information for you to verify'' he said, pointing to one of his men, who tore some pages from his notebook and handed them to me.
''Good, we will see if we can capture more'' I said, checking the addresses.
''Are you going to keep acting like this?'' he said, pointing at my clothes.
''Yes, we are throwing communist pamphlets when we do this to blame the communists'' I said, showing one of the pamphlets.
''Very clever, honestly. What do we do with them?'' Walter said, pointing with his thumb after putting away the bloodstained handkerchief.
''I tried to negotiate with them, so now they cannot simply be released after what you did to them. So I suppose you know how to make someone disappear, do you not?'' I said, staring directly into his eyes.
''Of course I know. Do not worry, I will make sure no one can find them'' Walter said with a completely serious face.
''Good, I will bring you the next batch if we are lucky'' I said as I left and climbed into the truck to begin searching the addresses.
