Chapter 22 - Father and foe

"You still won't heed to my warnings." He said when I didn't respond.

I still didn't speak.

I just watched as he stood there like he didn't just barge into my study.

Like he wasn't the cause of every that went wrong.

"You shouldn't be here, leave." I said coldly.

He looked past me to scan the insides of the study.

He walked closer to me.

"You're still being so reckless." He sighed.

"And you're still being so two-faced, I'm about to choke on your fake concerns." I retorted sharply.

We stood there for sometime glaring at each other before I moved for him to enter.

Not out of respect.

But because I didn't care enough to try to stop him.

"Let him go." He said, looking at Mr Heather.

"No!" I answered without hesitation.

He didn't look shocked at my rejection. Afterall, he already knew 'no' was the easiest thing for me to say.

"You're crossing a line Vincent." He scowled at me.

"I'm crossing a line?" I questioned with raised brows.

"Yes you are." He continued to glare at me.

I rolled my eyes.

"You mean like the one you crossed when you planted someone to spy on me?"

"I was just trying to protect what's mine." He said simply.

I couldn't help but smirk.

"So you mean to say I would try to destroy Russo corps.?"

He stayed silent.

"Well, I would have had it not been my mother's legacy too." I sighed.

How jaw visibly tightened and I knew I had hit a sour spot.

"I was just trying to help you." He said.

"Oh please keep your pathetic lies to yourself." I scoffed. "They might have worked on my mom but I can assure you they won't work on me."

The silence in the room stretched.

I threatened.

"So leave now, or I'll make you."

"You're threatening me?" He looked surprised this time.

I smiled internally.

Finally caught him off guard.

"It's not just a threat it's a warning. If you don't leave this minute I might end up doing something you'd regret." I said my piece.

"Careful Vincent." His voice darkened.

"No, you be careful." I said looking him straight in the eye.

I could see the veins on his head visibly pop.

"You sent him to spy on me and now you're playi the good guy card?" I questioned as irritation began to build up inside me.

"Like I said, I was only trying to protect you." He repeated.

Lies.

I was tired of listening to his damned forsaken lies.

Did he really think I'd fall for them.

If he did… then he surely has a lot more to learn about his dear son.

"Leave." I repeated.

"Vincent, you're trying to fit in your feet into shoes that were never meant for you." He warned. "And there's one thing that always happens when you do such a thing… your feet always ends up slipping out."

"I understand what I'm doing perfectly, I don't need your advice." I hissed.

"No you don't."

One thing he really doesn't seem to understand is that even if I had to destroy my own life to bring my mother's murderers to book I'd happily do so.

"Mr. Russo, you'll be surprised but I know a lot more than you do." I smirked. "For example I know that your little spy has just been used as a scapegoat."

He didn't respond this time.

He couldn't.

He had nothing to use to back himself up.

"I'm going to end this, even if it's the last thing I do keep that in mind Mr. Russo." I said before leaving the study.

I couldn't stand breathing the same air as that man.

Unfortunately my father wasn't done with me, yet.

He blocked my way before I could enter my room.

"Stop digging into your mother's death." He said.

"I won't. You might not care about her but I do, I want my mother's soul to rest in peace and for that to happen I need to see justice on her behalf." I refused to listen to him.

He pleaded.

"Please… I'm begging you to stop all this."

Was I hearing things?

Did the Alarico Russo just say 'please'.

I asked.

"You want to know what I think?"

He stayed silent.

"You're a coward, you're scared." I continued.

"Mind your words Vincent, you talking to your father." He said.

"And like I told you before, you're just my father in name onl-"

"Vincent!" He interrupted me.

"You know, I think…" I paused . "Whatever this is.."

I lowered my voice.

"..it leads back to you."

I saw shock, fear and a touch of something I couldn't name.

But it was enough for me to be sure that my father had something to do with my mother's death.

I felt the urge to vomit at the mere sight of him.

I didn't give him a chance to respond before shoving him aside, making sure to lock my room door before hurrying into my bathroom to let out the vomit.

Washing my face by the sink, I clenched my teeth to stop the urge to go back outside and end that bastard once and for all.

Just then my phone vibrated in my pocket and I bring it out to look at the caller ID.

It was Gigi.

"Yes?" I asked as I answered the call.

"What's wrong with you? Are you sick?" She asked, her voice coated with concern.

"No, I'm good. Why did you call me?" I responded.

"You don't sound good to me. I'll send May over with some home made medicine tomorrow." She said.

"You don't have to." I tried to reject her offer.

"You're marrying my daughter soon and I'll become your mother-in-law, I'm just like a mother to you, so don't refuse me, okay?" Her voice came out soothing and relaxing.

All my resolve to reject her offer faded away immediately. "Okay. Why did you call me?"

"About that, I heard what you did for my daughter today so I wanted to thank you." She said.

"It's not a big deal, if I don't protect North, then who would I protect?" I asked rhetorically.

"Fine. Take care of yourself, I'll send May over tomorrow." She said and ended the call.

Mrs Belmont has always been warm in her relation with people, it was common knowledge.

And she has only proven the rumors right since the first day I met her in the boardroom.

Her words had managed to calm me down.

I could finally think with a clear head now.

I stepped out of my room and saw Daniel leaning on the wall opposite my door.

"You good?" He asked with a smile.

"Yh. He's gone now so I can cool down." I said.

He informed.

"Mr. Russo has taken Mr Heather to the hospital."

"Hmm."

"Do you want me to call sister-in-law to come cool you down?" He teased, trying to lighten up my mood.

I just playfully glared at him.

"Do you think I overreacted back at the fashion banquet?" I asked him.

"Well…if I'm to answer that question as your friend I'd say yes." He answered truthfully.

"Do you think I should apologize?" I asked.

Daniel laughed.

"The great Vincent Russo apologizing to a woman, that'd make headlines."

"Stop laughing." I glared at him.

"When next will you be seeing her?" He asked.

"Tomorrow, aunt Gigi said she'll send her over to bring something for me." I answered.

"Oohhh, lover boy will meet his belle soon." He teased and I instantly regretted asking him about this in the first place.

"You're useless." I hissed and walked back into the room making sure to lock the door to prevent a certain fool from continuing his mindless teasing.
