Chapter 38 - Will You Marry Me?

"You know where it is?" I leaned forward, completely forgetting we weren't supposed to be this close. "Do you have it?

"No."

The hope died right there. I slumped back into my seat. "Right."

"But I can help you find it."

For a second, I forgot about the mansion, the grandfather, the job, everything. I just stared at him.

"You can?" I whispered.

His expression softened, just a little bit. "Yeah."

My chest tightened. That watch wasn't worth a dime to anyone else. It was scratched, old, and broken. But it was one of the last things my mother had ever placed in my hands before she died. The mere possibility of holding it again made my eyes sting.

"It's really important to me," I said, my voice cracked a little. "It's the only thing I have left."

"I know."

The way he said it, so fast made it sound like he'd known the value of that watch to me long before we'd ever stood in this parking lot.
