Chapter 353: The Road East
They left Kael's Seat on a grey morning, four of them and a pack mule, with Yara staying behind to keep measuring the part of the world she could stand on.
She had said it without complaint. "I will track the western edge from here. You track the eastern. We meet in the middle when the two of us have enough to argue about." Then she had marked Kai's old grass-line map with a fresh line and handed it back, and that was her goodbye, which suited her.
The first two days were ordinary highland. Brown grass, thin wind, stone the colour of old bone. Kai read nothing under it but sleeping ground. The network was still days east, past the edge of his reach.
On the third day the land began to change.
He felt it before he saw it.
