Chapter 352: Between
The Director did not answer the three filings the next day, or the day after.
Kai understood why. An answer too fast would look like a man who already knew what he was hiding. An answer too slow would look like a man who did not know what to do. The Director wanted neither. So he kept the three filings in a row on his table and read them again each morning, the way Kai read a ground he did not yet trust.
On the third morning he called the room together.
Neral came first, notebook under his arm. Soren came up from the lower hall where he had been logging the field record, ink on two of his fingers. Yara came last, and she sat where she could see the window. Mira stood by the door. She did not always come to these. She came to this one.
The Director set his hand flat on the three filings.
