Daniel called at four seventeen on a Thursday afternoon.
Kendrick was in a meeting that had been running forty minutes longer than scheduled when his phone lit up with Daniel's name. He excused himself, stepped into the corridor, and answered before the door had fully closed behind him.
"Tell me," he said.
"We traced the number." Daniel's voice had the particular quality it carried when he'd found something he hadn't expected. "The unknown number from the photo message. Chapter twelve."
Kendrick stilled.
"And."
"It's not Richard's people."
"I know it's not Richard. He wouldn't—"
"It's not Victor either."
A pause.
"Then who," Kendrick said.
"A lawyer named Cecily Marsh." A beat. "No relation to me, before you ask. She's been in designation registry law for fourteen years. Private practice, small firm, very specific client base." Another beat. "She has represented the Voss family for the past six years."
