"We're going to the hospital to check your arm," Pei Shiyi replied nonchalantly.
As the Rolls Royce glided steadily down the road, Jing Meng asked with feigned casualness, "How did you know the wound on my arm had reopened?"
Pei Shiyi did not answer her. Instead, his gaze fell upon the faint smear of crimson on her sleeve.
Jing Meng followed his eyes and immediately understood when she saw the traces of blood seeping through the bandage. If one wasn't sharp-eyed and incredibly attentive, such a detail would have been impossible to notice.
She quietly shifted her gaze toward Pei Shiyi, who sat beside her. His cool, sharp profile was reflected in the car window, making him look like an ethereal deity untouched by the world. However, the soft glow of the streetlights outside added a touch of warmth to his presence, grounding him in reality.
A man like Pei Shiyi, whether in her past life or this one, possessed a charm that never failed to make her heart flutter.
While she was lost in her thoughts, the Rolls Royce came to a steady stop at the hospital entrance.
After stepping out of the car, the two of them headed straight for the surgical department.
The surgeon on duty was a middle-aged man. When he saw the pair strikingly handsome and exceptionally beautiful he couldn't help but marvel inwardly. Are all young people these days so good-looking?
"Doctor, please check her arm," Pei Shiyi said directly, not waiting for the doctor to speak first.
The doctor nodded and began a thorough examination of Jing Meng's arm. "The wound isn't a major issue. Just remember not to lift anything heavy for a while and make sure to get plenty of rest."
Hearing the doctor's words, Jing Meng began to relax. But just as she was about to speak, a sudden, agonizing pain tore through her abdomen, as if a hand were gripping her stomach and twisting it violently.
"What's wrong?" Pei Shiyi asked, his voice laced with anxiety as he saw her break into a cold sweat while clutching her stomach.
Jing Meng shook her head. She gritted her teeth against the roiling pain, but her face turned deathly pale. Her vision went black, and she collapsed backward.
When she finally regained consciousness, the air was thick with the scent of disinfectant.
Jing Meng tried to move, but her movement accidentally tugged at the IV line hanging beside her.
The sound alerted Pei Shiyi, who had been resting nearby. "How are you? Do you feel any better?"
Feeling a bit self-conscious under his intense gaze, Jing Meng coughed lightly and asked, "What happened to me?"
Her voice was incredibly raspy. Pei Shiyi handed her a glass of warm water, and she took a few sips while he held the glass for her.
Before she could say anything else, the curtain was pulled back. The ward doctor saw that she was awake and let out a sigh of relief. "Honestly, you young people... you treat your health like a joke. Look at you now a stomach flare-up so bad you had to be admitted for an IV drip."
The doctor shook his head helplessly before turning his attention to Pei Shiyi. "And you, as her husband, should show more concern for your wife."
Hearing the doctor refer to Pei Shiyi as her husband, Jing Meng reflexively blurted out, "He's not my husband! I have absolutely no relation to him!"
She explained so urgently and loudly that the doctor looked at the two of them with a suspicious glint in his eye.
"She's my girlfriend," Pei Shiyi said, his soft gaze lingering on Jing Meng. "Mengmeng."
The doctor realized at once. "Oh, so you're just shy. There's no need for that; a good man is hard to find these days."
What could she even say? Since Pei Shiyi had already claimed the title, she couldn't very well deny it right to his face.
Jing Meng's silence only further convinced the doctor that the two were merely flirting.
The doctor asked a few more questions before prescribing her medication. He then turned back to Pei Shiyi. "Your girlfriend needs to stay on the drip until tomorrow morning, and she'll need to stay for a few days of observation."
Seeing Pei Shiyi listening so intently, the doctor couldn't help but chuckle. "Young people these days, even showing off their affection in the hospital..."
Jing Meng didn't catch the rest of his words as the room fell silent. Feeling awkward, she simply closed her eyes and pretended to sleep. To her surprise, she actually drifted off.
When Jing Meng woke up the next morning, the ward door swung open, and a small figure slipped inside. Seeing Jing Meng, the boy was about to lunge toward her when he was suddenly swept up and pulled aside by a large hand.
Pei Shiyi looked down at Pei Cheng with cold eyes. "Mengmeng needs to rest. You cannot disturb her, or I will send you back."
"I understand, Daddy. I won't bother Mengmeng," Pei Cheng replied, realizing his behavior was inappropriate. He patted his chest as a guarantee that he wouldn't cause any more trouble.
A smile bloomed on Jing Meng's face. "Chengcheng, why did you come over today?"
"Mengmeng, I heard you were sick, so I came to see you!"
Pei Cheng didn't miss the chance to act cute. The two of them began chatting happily, instantly pushing Pei Shiyi to the back of their minds. By the time Jing Meng looked up again, Pei Shiyi had already left the room.
She instinctively checked her phone, but there were no messages from him. A sudden pang of unease settled in her heart.
As Pei Cheng sat obediently by her side, Jing Meng tried to suppress her discomfort and asked, "Chengcheng, have you been going to school lately?"
The moment she asked, the little guy's face crumpled. He looked as if he had suffered a great injustice and began to complain, "I haven't been going to school at all! Daddy sent me back to the old mansion for the past few days. He's so annoying!"
Jing Meng was amused by his dramatic display and spent a long time coaxing him until his anger subsided.
Children had short memories. He quickly forgot his previous grievances and started telling her about other things.
After staying in the hospital for a few days, Jing Meng finally received the doctor's approval to be discharged.
Standing at the hospital entrance, she finally breathed a sigh of relief. Pei Shiyi had gone to handle the discharge paperwork, and Pei Cheng had already been sent somewhere else.
She had no choice but to wait for Pei Shiyi at the entrance. As she waited, she looked around out of boredom.
Suddenly, she spotted a familiar silhouette. Without a second thought, she immediately followed after the figure.
