Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: Strike First

"Mmm," Jing Meng responded softly, meeting Pei Shiyi's somewhat unnatural gaze.

"Is there something you want to say to me?"

She had noticed it earlier. Pei Shiyi was acting strangely, so hesitant, not at all like his usual decisive self.

A strange silence filled the air for a moment.

The two looked at each other, but neither spoke.

Finally.

Pei Shiyi turned his gaze away. "It's nothing. Get some rest. I'll look into Jing Hong's matter. Don't worry too much."

With that, he hurriedly left the hospital room.

Jing Meng watched Pei Shiyi's retreating figure, stunned for a moment.

Was Pei Shiyi… avoiding her?

A wave of dizziness interrupted her thoughts. Jing Meng sighed helplessly. "Forget it, I won't bother with him."

A few days later, Pei Shiyi received a report from his subordinate saying they had lost him…

Jing Hong, who had just been buying water in a small supermarket, disappeared in the blink of an eye, like a phantom, swiftly darting into a narrow alley.

The subordinate hurriedly followed, standing at the end of the alley, unsure which way to chase. Frustrated, he kicked the ground, and finally had to turn back in the direction he came from.

Seeing the tail leave, Jing Hong, who had been hiding in a secluded corner, emerged with a bellyful of anger. Fury flashed in his clear black and white eyes, and his well-defined fingers clenched into a fist as he vowed silently.

Jing Meng, you are truly ruthless!

Jing Hong mistakenly believed that Jing Meng had sent people to follow him, and his hatred for this older sister grew even more. He then turned and disappeared into the deserted alley.

When Pei Shiyi received the photos sent by his subordinate, his brow furrowed instantly. He shifted his gaze to Jing Meng, who was sitting beside him, unsure how to speak.

"What's wrong?" Jing Meng noticed Pei Shiyi's hesitant mood and turned to ask, puzzled.

For the past few days, Pei Shiyi had been acting so hesitant, completely unlike his usual self.

"Just a small matter with the company, nothing important."

Pei Shiyi thought for a moment and decided to keep the matter to himself. Taking advantage of Jing Meng's distraction, he immediately sent a message to the person who was tailing Jing Hong.

Immediately find Jing Hong's whereabouts. There can be no more mistakes.

"Right, you've recovered quite a bit these past few days. Would you like to enter the Pei family's laboratory?"

To divert Jing Meng's attention, Pei Shiyi suddenly remembered what Elder Pei had mentioned to him last time.

Let Jing Meng enter the Pei family's laboratory!

Jing Meng's eyes lit up when she heard this, and she grabbed Pei Shiyi's sleeve in disbelief. "Really?"

The Pei family's laboratory was a dream for many engineers!

Pei Shiyi smiled slightly, looking at her shining eyes. "Of course, it's true. Would you like to take a look?"

"Yes!" Jing Meng immediately jumped out of bed, ready to head out, but Pei Shiyi pulled her back.

"You should change out of that hospital gown first…" Saying this, Pei Shiyi's lips curved slightly. "Looking like that, who would think you're an engineer?"

Jing Meng immediately began to examine herself upon hearing this.

Hospital gown, slippers, and looking in the mirror, her hair was disheveled, and her face was pale.

Jing Meng: …

Was the haggard, ghost-like woman in the mirror really her???

Seeing her suddenly freeze, Pei Shiyi smiled knowingly, tightening his grip on her wrist, pulling her back.

"You should rest well first. I'll take you there tomorrow after you've checked out of the hospital. The Pei family's laboratory isn't going anywhere. There's no rush," Pei Shiyi said, pulling the blanket over her, naturally ruffling her hair.

"I'm sorry"

A very, very soft voice.

Jing Meng looked at Pei Shiyi blankly, not understanding what he was doing again.

For the past few days, Pei Shiyi had been looking at her with a look she couldn't describe, making her a little creeped out. But before she could ask Pei Shiyi why he was saying sorry, Pei Shiyi had already left.

The next day.

Pei Shiyi completed the discharge procedures for Jing Meng, and drove her to his laboratory. "The experiment will be a little tedious. If you get bored, just tell me directly."

Jing Meng couldn't be clearer about what the laboratory was like. In her previous life, she spent ninety percent of her time in the laboratory doing research, only to be betrayed for her efforts.

However, it was enough for her to know these things, and she didn't plan to tell anyone, so she just smiled slightly.

To put it exaggeratedly, the laboratory was a place she yearned for all her life. After the car stopped, Jing Meng couldn't wait to get out of the car, wanting to enter the laboratory as soon as possible.

Having finally followed behind Pei Shiyi into the laboratory, Jing Meng was like a child seeing a beloved toy, looking around, unable to stop for a moment.

"Looks like I was overthinking it. You seem to like everything in the laboratory." Pei Shiyi followed behind her, completely ignored, joking with a hint of unintentional sourness.

Finally moving her gaze away, Jing Meng only spared a moment to reply. "They're all very novel things. I think many people would like them."

As she spoke, her gaze shifted again to a smart product that was halfway through development. The wires on it had not been completely connected, and the wiring was intricate and complex. She rubbed her chin, lost in thought.

"The place this line is running is wrong." Jing Meng reached out to fix it, but was immediately stopped.

A man in a white coat grabbed her wrist with a cold face, reminding her displeasedly, "Outsiders can't touch things in the laboratory."

It was precisely because of the meticulous research that there were correct results. Jing Meng naturally knew this, but she still enthusiastically explained, "Don't you always feel sluggish during testing?"

Directly pointing out the problem caused everyone to turn their heads.

"How did you know?" The man asked sternly, pressing for an answer.

Not wanting to be too ostentatious, Jing Meng randomly made up a reason to dismiss it. "It's nothing, I just read a few more books."

The staff in the laboratory, reminded by her, immediately became busy, eager to test whether her words were true.

The problem was with one line. The staff quickly connected the line to the designated position and then conducted the experiment. The reaction was indeed much faster than before.

A breakthrough of a difficult problem made everyone cheer for a moment.

Jing Meng was naturally very familiar with such moments and couldn't help but feel恍惚, as if she had returned to the scene in the laboratory. At that time, they would be happy for a long time because a difficult problem was overcome.

Unaware of what she was thinking, Pei Shiyi had another plan in mind. "How about it? Would you like to stay in the Pei family's laboratory?"

If it were in the past, Jing Meng wouldn't have hesitated for a moment about the Pei family's invitation. After all, the laboratory was very costly, and with the Pei family as a support, she naturally wouldn't have to worry about funding.

But today was different. She didn't want to be schemed against by another person with the surname Pei.
