Chapter 37 - Chapter 37: Guardians of Memory and the Forgotten Heir

The corridors of the school felt like cold, tightening windpipes that morning. The marble walls, once grand and stable, now seemed to press inward against Eiji and Aiko's every breath. Students passed them by like pale, flickering ghosts, their laughter sounding like the hollow rattling of dry bones. To the world, it was just another Tuesday, but to the two heroes, it was the day reality had decided to vomit its own history. They stood in an isolated corner of the courtyard, silent watchers of a world that had chosen to excise its roots.

**Aiko** (Her voice a thin, fragile thread of desperation): "Eiji... it's as if the world has been rewritten overnight. I checked every library, every digital archive, I even asked the teachers until they looked at me with pity, as if I'd finally snapped. Greece... it doesn't exist. It's a phantom limb only we can feel."

**Eiji** (Clenching his fists until his knuckles turned as white as the marble around them): "It's a nightmare we can't wake up from, Aiko. The world is warping, and we are the only anchors left for a history that has been erased. This helplessness... it's like screaming into a void that has already forgotten your name."

**A Student** (Passing by with a mocking snort, his voice dripping with condescension): "Hey, Eiji! Still looking for your 'Lost Civilization'? Maybe you should trade those history books for a psych evaluation. Stop living in fairy tales, man!"

The boy walked away, cackling with his friends, leaving Eiji to stare at the ground in a heavy, suffocating silence. He felt the weight of the entire world a world that no longer made sense resting squarely on his shoulders.

When Eiji returned home, his movements were mechanical and heavy. He dragged his tired feet through the hallway, greeted by the familiar, warm scent of coffee and an unusual stillness that seemed to cradle the house. As he entered the living room, he found Serena waiting for him, her gaze piercing through his shroud of exhaustion.

**Eiji** (In a low rasp, his voice thick with defeat): "I'm back..."

**Serena** (Her voice unusually calm and steady): "Welcome home, Eiji. I've been waiting for you."

**Eiji** (Sighing as he slumped into a chair): "Not now, Serena... I'm not in the mood. The world has gone mad. Everyone thinks I'm delusional because I remember a place called Greece."

**Serena** (Her tone shifting into something cold, sharp, and undeniably powerful): "The world isn't mad, Eiji. They are simply blind. They have forgotten the roots of Time itself. But you... you see the truth as it truly is."

Eiji froze. The air in the room suddenly began to hum with a low-frequency vibration. He watched in disbelief as his mother, Myra, approached with a serene expression, and then he saw it a warm, purple glow emanating from both of their palms. It was a surge of temporal energy he had never felt inside his own home.

**Eiji** (Choking on his words, his eyes wide with shock): "What? You... you remember? Mom... Serena... how? You both have temporal energy? Why didn't you ever tell me?"

**Serena** (Stepping forward with a newfound dignity): "Atsurai commanded our silence to protect you until your own power could withstand the truth. I am not just a family friend, Eiji. I am a former Guardian, sent by Atsurai to teach you what cannot be learned within the clinical walls of the Crystal Dome."

They moved the conversation to Eiji's room, where Grandmother Elara was already waiting. Her face bore the wisdom of centuries and the tranquil poise of the ancient Sentinels. She placed a tender hand on Eiji's shoulder, her touch grounding him in a way no medicine ever could. Serena pointed to the ring shimmering on Eiji's finger, her eyes alight with a serious, tactical focus.

**Grandmother Elara** (Softly): "Do not be disheartened, my child. Your father, Akira, fought these same battles. This family was never meant to be ordinary. We are the 'Guardians of Memory'—the ones who hold the line when Time itself decides to erase its own tracks."

**Serena** (Tapping the ring on his finger): "Look at this ring, Eiji. It isn't a mere heirloom; it is your scalpel for reality. I am going to teach you the 'Rewind Flash' (Retro-Flash)."

**Eiji** (Frowning): "Rewind Flash?"

**Serena** (Sternly): "The ability to reverse time for three to five minutes. If an ally falls, or a Wonder is destroyed, you can erase that event and try again. But the price is high—it drains the very essence of your soul. Now! Focus your energy into the ring. Imagine this ceramic cup returning to my hand before it shatters!"

Serena hurled a porcelain cup toward the floor. In the microsecond before it struck the wood, a searing heat exploded from Eiji's ring. The world turned silent and monochromatic. When Eiji opened his eyes, the cup was resting perfectly in Serena's hand, as if Time itself had bowed to his will.

**Eiji** (Gasping, his heart hammering against his ribs): "It... it went back! Serena, I did it!"

**Serena** (Offering a cryptic, knowing smile): "That was only a few seconds, Eiji. The real training begins now. Because the Fourth Wonder—The Colossus of Rhodes—will not show mercy to those who make even a single mistake."

The following morning, Eiji walked into the city with a renewed stride. He could see the golden threads of temporal reality weaving through the mundane world, and his faith in himself had returned. In a crowded public square, his attention was drawn to a commotion. A young boy in a tattered jacket was screaming in despair while bystanders laughed and recorded him with their phones.

**The Boy, Rein** (Screaming, tears streaming down his face): "Listen to me! The maps are lying! There were islands... there was a civilization called Greece! Why won't anyone remember?!"

**Eiji** (Thinking to himself as his Eye Mark pulsed with a sudden recognition): *That aura... his heartbeat is perfectly synchronized with the rhythm of my ring!*

Eiji stepped forward and gripped the boy's hand with a steady, commanding strength.

**Eiji** (Firmly): "Stop screaming. I see you, Rein. And I believe you."

**Rein** (Looking up in shock, his breath hitching): "You... are you real? Do you remember it too?"

**Eiji** (With a grim, iron resolve): "I am the reason it disappeared, and I am the one who will bring it back. Come with me. There is a place you need to see."

The scene shifted to the heart of the **Crystal Dome**. As soon as Rein stepped onto the floating platforms, the gargantuan crystals vibrated violently, humming with a frequency that threatened to shatter the glass-like floor. Atsurai appeared, her features twisted in a mix of rage and absolute bewilderment at this breach of protocol.

**Atsurai** (Her voice booming with authority): "Eiji! Have you lost your mind?! How dare you bring an unregistered 'human' into the Holy of Holies of Time? This is a violation that could cause the Dome to collapse into the Void!"

**Eiji** (Standing his ground, unmoving): "He isn't just a human, Atsurai. Look at his aura. It awakened the moment my energy collided with the Code Phantom's. He carries the 'Pure Pulse'."

**Atsurai** (Approaching the boy, her eyes narrowing as she scanned his molecular structure): "Impossible... this shimmer... this genetic code... You are a descendant of the **Osiris** line—the Guardians who were lost during the Renaissance! How has your lineage survived in the shadows?"

**Rein** (Trembling but standing tall): "I... I don't know much. My grandfather always told me we were protecting 'The Clock That Doesn't Tick.' I never understood what he meant until today."

They moved to the training grounds, where Aiko watched with intense focus. Eiji began the grueling process of teaching Rein how to sense Time beyond the five physical senses. Atsurai watched like a hawk, having decided to put this new heir through a trial by fire.

**Atsurai** (Coldly): "Since he is of Guardian blood, the system won't execute him immediately, but he must prove his worth. Eiji, you brought him here, so you will train him. If he fails the first exercise, I will erase his memory and cast him back into the world forever."

**Eiji** (Looking at Rein with the eyes of a mentor): "Listen to me... Time isn't a number on a watch; it's a feeling in the gut. I want you to feel the crystal behind you. Don't look at it with your eyes—feel it with your heartbeat."

**Aiko** (Encouraging him): "Don't give up, Rein. Eiji struggled at first, too. Remember your grandfather... remember the clock that doesn't tick!"

The crystals suddenly hummed in perfect harmony with Rein's breathing, glowing with a soft, steady light.

**Eiji** (Smiling with pride): "He did it... the talent is in his very marrow."

**Serena** (Emerging from the shadows, her gear ready): "Well done, Eiji. But there is no time for celebrations. Our new guest will have to learn 'in the field.' Prepare yourselves. The portal to the Colossus of Rhodes is opening now!"

Eiji, Aiko, and Rein stood before the swirling black vortex that had appeared in the center of the hall, ready to plunge into the forgotten island of Rhodes and face the next nightmare of the Void.
