Will mostly be all original content for her plain clothes day it might be shortish
--Mid-Wilshire Station--
We were in uniform and standing in the Captains office while she and Grey addressed us.
"100 shifts." She said the words she spoke caired a weight.
Sergeant Grey stepped forward slightly, hands clasped behind his back. "Listen, not a lot of rookies make it to this point in their probationary year."
"It's a reason to celebrate."Andersen added
Grey nodded once. "But not too much." stopping the celebration that we had going on in our heads
"For your first 100 shifts, your training officers have been there to guide the way. Not today." Andersen said before Jackson spoke up after realizing what was happening.
She let the silence stretch just long enough before continuing. "Not today."
"Plain Clothes Day."
"That's right, Officer West. Very good." Andersen said.
"I'm sorry, what is Plain Clothes Day?" Lucy asked confused.
"Your T.O.s will be out of uniform, riding with you in a strictly observational capacity." Grey answered her questions.
"What about me?" I asked as I was the only rookie counted as a floater.
"I will be riding with you." The Captain spoke up before Grey could.
"Ma'am?" Surprising me and Grey along with the others.
"While I will be there like the name implies its only to observe and any way I will be bringing some paper work with me to do/drop off." She answered my surprise.
"Does this mean I finally get to choose where we eat for lunch?" Nolan asked super hopeful.
"Yes, Officer Nolan. For all intents and purposes, today you are alone. And that should scare the hell out of you." Grey answered
"This will be a true measure of where you are in the learning process. And your performance today could have a profound impact on your career path in this department." Andersen then spoke up.
"So, any questions?" Grey asked.
"Uh, yes, sir. What happens if we get into real trouble?" Lucy asked him.
"Deal with it. And if you can't, your T.O. will step in." Grey answered.
"But make no mistake - If that happens, you will be judged. That's it. Good luck out there." Andersen spoke up before dismissing us. After the others left I stayed to ask the Captain some questions before I could ask she spoke up.
"Set up the shop I have to send an email then I will be down with my stuff."
"Yes, Ma'am."
I went down stairs getting the two kit bags the two types of shotguns and then the medical bag. I headed to the shop with the gear and packed it away before doing the check of the outside and back seat then signed in. Just finishing when the Captain walked in with brief case and some paper.
"Do you want to put the brief case in the back?" I asked her before she nodded causing me to go and open it for her before closing it and we sat in the shop I then called out that I was active before leaving to my patrol area.
For the first 1 hour of the shift I stopped 5 cars 4 for speeding and 1 for expired tags, I only wrote the speeding tickets seeing as the person had the tag in the car just hadn't replaced it yet. After telling them to replace it pronto I let them go and resumed the patrol, while Andersen was in a conference call, I checking plates every once and a while at random when I was at a light.
"Your surprisingly calm about Plain Clothes Day." Andersen said.
"Serving in the military taught me that nerves are good as long as I am in control. That looking focus and trying to prove my self while will most of the time succeed will inevitably lead to fail or injury or worse death and I have led people in the military this is not the first time I was tested nor by my self even if right now is a technically alone."
"Hm, interesting." Andersen said before answering her next call.
I finally get the first call from dispatch about a noise disturbance.
"7-Adam-20 respond to a 415 at --- caller reports very loud arguments from next door neighbor."
"7-Adam-20 show us responding." I said.
As I got on scene Andersen was finishing her conference call. I approached the front door of the little house calling it in. "7-Adam-20 show me code 6 on call location."
and as I got closer I heard the argument and stuff breaking as I approached with my hand on my holster I knocked on the door. "Police! open up."
After a couple of seconds of hearing nothing new I banged on the door yelling "POLICE! COME TO THE DOOR NOW!" louder finally getting a response from inside just everything going quiet. Then I felt it a tingle go down my spine like a small shock as the front door opened I dived when I saw the glint of a gun dodging automatic fire shredding the post behind me.
"7-Adam-20 Shots fired send back ups!" I yelled into my radio.
"God, and I thought Nolan was a bad luck magnet." I muttered I dragged my self off the porch getting behind the the front of the house behind the foundation.
I leaned out as I returned fire into the doorway nailing the man, that shot at me, in the leg causing him to drop to the floor getting dragged into the house as I traded fire Andersen joined me having put on a vest. We looked at each other before firing into the door way while approaching the house. I peek out and see another person in the house before having to duck as they started to shoot at me. Andersen popped out and fired hitting the man in the arm causing him to drop the weapon. After she got him and he retreated into the house we waited for half a minute feeling Andersen grab a extra mag from the extra carrier I have on the back of my belt sideway out of the way. before slowly advancing to the door getting to the door seeing the man I shot down grunting and groaning in pain I move in for the cuff while Andersen covers. I was dragging the man out of the house to sit him on the porch when the other guy that ran into the house popped back out from the end of the hall with a pistol and started to shoot again causing me to drop and roll behind another wall while Andersen returned fire. I got closer after securing the man to a table. When I hear police sirens approaching from outside the house before hearing tire squeal as they break I leaned out and shot the wall of the room he was hiding in when I heard a groan and hear him fall over getting hit again in the leg. We slowly approach the doorway while officers behind us that have run up to join started to clear the rooms we pass. When we finally get to the room I see the man moving on the ground when we breach the room and clear another officer rolls him cuffing him.
I sigh pausing for a minute before getting my radio out.
"7-Adam-20 code 4 2 suspects secure need RA for gun shot wounds." I put it away pulling out gloves as the officers drag him out. "And now time to be the EMT i said while kneeling down next one of the men while another officer started to treat the man they dragged out.
We clear from the scene after getting the men into the ambulances that showed up.
She looked up and started talking. "Nice job handling that situation. went from a normal disturbance to a shoot out in seconds."
"I knew something was going to happen when the door started to open. I got a tingle down my back and that has only happened when something bad was going to happen." I answered while pulling from the scene and heading back to the station.
5 minutes for the Captain came back down and we headed out spending the next two hours dropping some papers off for the Captain
I was stopped at an intersection when a black sedan rolled past too fast and driving erratically.
"Got you." I spoke up getting the captain who was doing some paperwork to look up for a little bit.
I flipped on her lights and signaled to the sedan. The sedan hesitated to pull over it drifted slowly over to the side but it didn't stop it just slowed fearing a car chase I slightly tightened my grip on the wheel.
"Come on… don't do this."
"7-Adam-20, traffic stop. Black sedan, eastbound ---" I called in. When the sedan finally stopped.
I parked at an angle behind it, giving space eyes locked on the vehicle reading what I can from behind. Three occupants, the driver, a front seat passenger, and a person in the rear seat who kept moving. After taking a breath I stepped out of the shop and proceeded to the driver side putting my hand on the trunk and then stopping and positioning myself to see as much of the three occupants as possible while staying out of direct line of fire.
"Good afternoon, I am Officer Alverez with the Los Angeles Police Department." I called out. "Sir, can you please turn the vehicle off and keep your hands visible for me please." After a tense couple of seconds the driver finally complied turning off the car and putting his hands back on the top of the steering wheel, seeing this I continued
"Front seat passenger please keep your hands visible and person in the rear please keep your hands visible stop moving." The front passenger complied immediately while the rear seat took some time before they pushed them into the front.
"Reason for the stop is because you ran that red light back there and your driving was very erratic." I said before pausing and continuing. "License, registration, proof of insurance."
The driver nodded quickly, fumbling slightly as he reached for his wallet.
"Hey, slow down there is no need to rush here." I said while tracking all the hands in the car.
"Sorry, sorry," he muttered before producing the required things. I looked at the eyes of the passengers before taking the items. The front passenger avoided eye contact. The rear passenger watching her very intently.
Elena took the procured items before stepping back slightly.
"Hang tight." I spoke up meeting eyes one more time before returning to the shop opening the door, but not getting in. I looked through the rear window seeing the rear passenger leaned forward, whispering something to the driver. The driver shook his head. Seeing this I step his items onto the computer before walking back out to the car watching more intently before speaking up.
"Driver, step out of the vehicle."
The man froze. "What? Why?"
"Step out."
After a pause he complied and stepped out where I guided him toward the back of the car.
"What's going on?" he asked.
"You tell me. Why'd it take you so long to pull over?"
"I didn't see you right away."
"Lights and sirens are hard to miss."
He didn't answer that.
I looked back into the car before looking back at the driver before asking in a lowered voice. "Anyone in the car have weapons?"
After hearing that he responded immediately. "No."
"Anything illegal I should know about?"
The man this time hesitated before spitting out a very rushed answer. "No."
I studied him before telling him to take a seat on the curb stepping back to the shop's passenger side where the captain was, I didn't say anything to her just met her eyes before I called for back up for support and asked them to come code 2. So they didn't spook the passengers and driver.
While waiting, I kept my eyes on the car.
The rear passenger shifted again. Hands disappeared for a second before coming back up.
I called out to the rear passenger. "Back seat—keep your hands visible!" When he heard this he complied but snapped at me.
"Alright! Alright!".
Backup pulled in behind me. Finally. When the officer walked up to me I communicated the plan about detaining them and performing a search.
I walked up to the passenger side.
"Passenger, step out."
One by one, she removed them from the vehicle first the rear seat then the front seat. A quick search of the car revealed a small bag hidden under the rear seat where the rear passenger was sitting. After pulling it out I see that it was a bunch of pills definitely not legal stepping back setting them on the trunk of the car.
I stood back, arms resting on my duty belt with the bag of pills as I looked at the three of them.
"Funny thing about traffic stops they're usually just about speeding." I stated to the people. The rear passenger looked away before I even finished talking.
"But sometimes," she continued, "they're about something else."
As the back up officer helped me search and secure the suspects we moved them into the back of shops before calling it in.
"7-Adam-20, Code 4. Three detained."
As I leaned against the shop for a second, allowing myself a small, quiet breath while thinking.
No T.O Captain Andersen was only here in a observational capacity. No backup at first when the passenger kept shifting around and she handled it.
For the rest of the shift it felt slower like a city calmed down. mostly did traffic stops, family disturbance calls thinking back to how I started todays shift made me very cautious when I responded but they ended up being just a TV in one call where the owner had the TV way too loud and the tv arguments were being broadcasted to the neighbors after a short conversation they apologized and turned the TV down. I got called to a small liquor store that had a theft and when I arrived I was greeted by a broken window and an angry shop keeper. Getting down I grabbed the necessary report to begin filling it out after checking on the person that found it along with a the owner. Greeting them I introduced my self to them before gathering information. It turns out it was a break in before the store opened and there was no one inside and the one camera they had wasn't working. After explaining that seeing as there is not much I can currently do with them that when we finish this report I will be giving it to the detectives so they can work on the case. After slightly appeasing the owner I was able to finally calm him down
End of shift the end of Plain Clothes Day could not have come sooner I mean having someone in the car that is there really only to judge you is definitely nerve racking even when I didn't show it.
We got back to the station and I followed the Captain up to her her office.
"Good Job today Officer Alverez, not only did you keep your head cool for the entire of your shift even when you were under fire and when you dealt with the angry people on some scene while you did calm them down and it didn't escalate I recommend you work on your de-escalation now have a good day clean up and go celebrate with your fellow rookies I know I did when we finished plain clothes day.
After shift when we call changed we met at the food trucks for the celebratory shot Jackson had proposed as we were all leaving the station.
We sat at a table waiting for Nolan who was now on his way back to the table with said shots. After he sat down Lucy started to talk.
"Sucks you didn't get a crack at your father's record."
"Well, it doesn't matter. Yeah, breaking records and making the most arrests? Not why I became a cop. You?" Jackson responded before looking over at Nolan to get an answer.
"Me? I'm in it for the wool pants. Elena what about you why did you come a cop."
They all looked over at me as we sat there in silence waiting for my answer.
"What? You don't know i'm in it for the chicks." I said wiggling my eye brows getting them all to laugh. "But seriously I am here for the happy moments we give people on their worst day." I then spoke back up with my real answer.
"Okay. Now it is time for our "to me" toast. To me, no longer being crushed by my father's shadow." Jackson said raising his shot glass.
"To me, not having to apply to be a mall cop in the morning."
"To me, finally doing something I love."
"To me - Honestly, guys, I got nothing. Unlike you, I had a perfect day."
"Cheers." we all said clinking our glasses before knocking back the shot.
Lucy started to stand up. "All right, now, if you'll excuse me, I got something I gotta do."
We watched her walk over to Tim handing him a manila envelope before speed walking to us.
"Hey, uh, get your stuff together. We got to go. We got to go. Let's go, let's go." She said urgently pushing us to move faster.
"What?" Jackson asked as she pushed him from behind
"Come on."
We all left as we heard Tim yell out Lucy's name getting to the cars before agreeing to meet up at Nolan's house for the night seeing as it was the closest house and we were beat.
