Chapter 60 - Chapter 14: The Collective's Answer

They came three days later.

Not an invasion—a single entity. The Collective's true form, manifesting in our reality for the first time. It was vast beyond comprehension, a darkness that blotted out the sun, a hunger that made the Void Stalkers seem like hungry kittens.

You've chosen poorly, traveler.

"I've chosen perfectly."

This form cannot defeat us. You've limited yourself for the sake of attachments that will wither and die. In a century, these people will be dust. In a millennium, even their memories will fade. And you'll be alone, trapped in a reality too small for what you are.

"Maybe." I stood in Jackson Square, facing the darkness alone. "But maybe not. Maybe I'll find new attachments. New reasons to stay. New people to love."

Love. Such a fragile concept.

"Fragile things are the strongest. Because they break. And then they heal. And then they're stronger than before."

The Collective paused. For a moment, I thought I'd reached it.

Then it attacked.

The city fought with me.

Not just the people—the city. Every brick, every tree, every drop of water in the Mississippi. New Orleans had been absorbing magic for centuries, and now it poured that magic into me.

I became the Quarter. The Bayou. The river. The cemeteries where the dead rested and the streets where the living danced.

The Collective screamed as I pushed it back, tore it apart, sent it fleeing into the darkness between realities.

This isn't over, it hissed.

"No. But it's a start."
