Mark tripped over the edge of the sidewalk. His body was thrown forward and slammed hard against the asphalt. The palms of his hands were scraped by the pavement until the skin peeled away, oozing fresh blood that was quickly washed away by the drizzle. His injured knee struck the concrete curb for the second time.
"Arghhh!!"
A scream of pain escaped his lips once more. This time, he truly couldn't get back to his feet right away. Mark lay face-down on the cold asphalt, breathing heavily, his chest rising and falling rapidly. His eyes, now blurred by the rain, remained fixed ahead, staring at the red taillights of Celine's car, which had now turned at the intersection and vanished completely from view.
He had been abandoned. Completely abandoned in the pit of darkness he had dug for himself.
Mark clutched the asphalt with his trembling, bloodied fingers.
The next day.
