Madam Anna saw the shadow of something over there, but just as she was about to reach through a gap in the fence, the car's headlights suddenly came on—blinding Madam Anna so much that she had to cover her face with her hands.
The car's smooth yet powerful engine began to roar. Madam Anna froze when she realized the car didn't belong to Mrs. Beatrice's family. She could only stare blankly as the car's tires moved slowly, before it finally sped away.
"Quick, bring her inside!" Madam Anna shouted, a note of panic beginning to creep into her voice. "Don't let Mrs. Beatrice know something fell outside!"
At the same moment, the headlights of Mark's black car cut through the heavy rain pouring down on the house's courtyard. The windshield wipers moved quickly, but Mark's view remained limited by the thick curtain of water. He turned off the engine, leaving behind a silence soon filled by the irregular beat of his heart. Working late at the office hadn't managed to calm his mind.
