Chapter 52: Kinnow, Navel, and the Seven Grapefruit Islands
Lyra and the gang were having a relaxing break on a beach on Kinnow Island.
It had been quite the two weeks for them. First, they had visited an island named Pinkan Island. It was called that because there were fruit trees that bore special pink berries that would turn a Pokémon pink if it ate them. Pichu and Pikachu tried a pink berry, and it made their tails turn pink, and Lyra caught a Shiny Ponyta there as well.
Next, they visited a stage boat. Instead of people acting in stage shows, it was Pokémon doing all the acting. The clever thing was that the Pokémon did all the talking and dancing. Of course, the Pokémon couldn't really talk; human actors acted out their voices from backstage while the Pokémon just mimed the voices.
Lyra and the gang found that out after they saw a performance and promised to keep it all a secret.
Lyra and Tomo were playing with Pichu, Pikachu, and Growlithe in the sand, and Tracey was sketching in his paper pad, sketching Lyra's Pokémon because he had never seen them before.
Lyra let out Lapras, Shiny Charizard (Chara), Venusaur (Vena), Blastoise (Blasta), Milotic, and Mystic for some fresh air to swim or rest. Salamence and Altaria were flying in the sky.
Meanwhile, Misty was training her Pokémon. Right now, she was training her Psyduck and Goldeen.
Psyduck was practicing its Water Gun attack.
"Your Psyduck is doing well, Mist," Lyra said from her spot, resting against Venusaur while still playing in the sand.
"You're right, Lu," Misty said with a smile. "Thank you for helping me teach Psyduck Calm Mind." She remembered that Lyra's Psyduck had turned into a real fighter before it evolved into Golduck because Calm Mind helped it.
So Misty decided to teach her Psyduck Calm Mind as well.
"Lyra told me that both you and she have a Golduck," Tracey said.
"That's correct," Misty said. "My Golduck is back at the Cerulean Gym."
"I'd like to visit your gym sometime, Misty," Tracey said.
Just then, another Psyduck popped out of the ocean.
"Where did that Psyduck come from?" Misty asked.
"Sorry, that Psyduck is mine," said a voice. The voice belonged to a girl with blue hair. "My name is Marina," she said, "and I'm a Water Pokémon trainer."
"What a coincidence," Misty smiled. "I'm Misty, and I'm a Water Pokémon trainer too."
"Really?" said Marina. "Do you love Water Pokémon?"
"Yes, I do," Misty answered.
Misty and Marina began chatting about their admiration for Water Pokémon.
"Those two sure love Water Pokémon very much," Tracey commented.
"I feel bored listening to this," Tomo said in a bored tone. He looked at his sister, who had fallen asleep.
"Hey, are those your Water Pokémon swimming?" Marina asked, pointing to Gyarados, Milotic, Lapras, and Blastoise.
Misty shook her head. "No. The Gyarados, Milotic, Lapras, and Blastoise belong to my friend Lu," Misty said, pointing to Lyra, who was now sleeping comfortably against Altaria, who had flown down a couple of minutes ago. Her hood was over her head, with Venusaur, Charizard, and Salamence next to her.
"I see," Marina said, looking at Milotic, Blastoise, and Gyarados. "I've never seen a Milotic, a different-colored Gyarados, or a Shiny Blastoise before."
"That's because Milotic are found in the Hoenn region," Misty explained. "Lu caught her Gyarados on Route 1 when she began her journey, and Blastoise, or Blasta, she caught when we were resting on an island."
"Oh, how amazing," Marina said. She then suggested having a Water Pokémon battle.
Misty liked the idea and agreed.
Marina and Misty stood on two large stones as platforms, while the battlefield was the ocean. Marina sent out Tentacruel, while Misty sent out Goldeen.
"Wow, Misty, your Goldeen is gorgeous," Marina commented.
"And your Tentacruel is charming, Marina," Misty replied.
"Oh boy," Tracey sighed. "This is going to take all day."
Marina ordered Tentacruel to use Wrap.
"Quick, Goldeen, use Agility," Misty said. Thanks to its speed, Goldeen dodged the attack. "Now use Supersonic." Goldeen's horn glowed light blue and released waves that confused Tentacruel. "Now use Horn Attack." Goldeen struck Tentacruel.
Marina grew worried. "Tentacruel, use Poison Sting." Tentacruel fired purple spikes, hitting Goldeen and causing it to faint.
"Goldeen, return," Misty said.
Misty sent out Staryu.
Marina ordered Poison Sting again.
"Staryu, use Swift!" The stars broke through the spikes and struck Tentacruel, knocking it out.
Marina sent out Psyduck.
"Use Water Gun!" Misty said.
"Use Confusion!" Marina countered. Psyduck redirected the attack, causing Staryu to faint.
Misty sent out her Psyduck.
Suddenly, a blue duck emerged.
"Golduck!"
"Hey, it's a Golduck!" Misty said.
Marina squealed. "Golduck is my favorite Water Pokémon! I'm going to catch it!"
After battling, Marina successfully captured it.
The battle continued and ended in a draw as both Psyduck fainted.
🏔️ Navel Island – The Mountain Challenge
Soon, they arrived at Navel Island.
"This is where I can get my second badge," Lyra said, looking around.
A man approached them.
"Looking for the Gym?" he asked.
"Yes," Lyra replied.
"I'll take you there," he said. "Name's Danny."
He led them to a massive mountain.
"This is the Gym."
Lyra stared at it. "So the challenge is the mountain itself…"
Danny smiled. "Exactly."
A sign explained the rules—challengers must climb without using Pokémon.
Lyra sighed, then smiled. "Alright. Let's do this."
While Misty, Tomo, and Tracey took the cable car, Lyra climbed with Danny.
Surprisingly, she enjoyed it.
"You're having fun?" Danny asked.
"Yeah," Lyra replied. "It's good training."
Danny was impressed.
After a long climb, they reached the snowy summit.
Pichu and Pikachu quickly hid inside Lyra's coat, shivering.
Finally, they reached the top.
Danny turned to her.
"I'm the Gym Leader."
❄️ Three Challenges
First Challenge – Freeze the Geyser
Lapras vs Nidoqueen.
Danny won.
Lapras looked upset, but Lyra reassured it gently.
Second Challenge – Ice Sculpting
They had to carve sleds.
With Flareon's flames, Lyra created a perfect sled and won.
Final Challenge – Sled Race
They raced down the mountain.
As the terrain changed, Lyra's sled started breaking apart—but that made it lighter.
She gained speed and overtook Danny.
She crossed the finish line first—landing straight into the ocean.
Danny smiled.
"Lyra, that was incredible."
He handed her the Sea-Ruby Badge.
🍊 Seven Grapefruit Islands
Next, they arrived at a group of islands known for their giant grapefruits.
"Those are huge," Misty said.
Lyra nodded. "They look delicious."
"Don't touch them!"
A woman appeared, accusing them of being thieves—but quickly apologized.
Her name was Ruby, and she explained that someone had been stealing the fruit.
They soon found the culprit—
When they reached the thief, it turned out to be a huge, bipedal, dark-blue Pokémon with a cream-colored face, belly, and feet. Its body was mostly its belly, where most of its fat was stored. It had a large head, small pointed ears, and two fangs. Its arms and legs were short but powerful.
A massive Shiny Snorlax.
Snorlax, the Sleeping Pokémon.
The evolved form of Munchlax. Snorlax isn't satisfied until it eats nearly 900 pounds of food a day. Once it finishes eating, it falls into a deep sleep.
This Snorlax is a Shiny Pokémon.
It devoured entire trees and even swam between islands.
"I've never seen a Snorlax that can swim," Misty said.
"We have to stop it," Lyra said.
Lyra sent out Kangaskhan for the battle.
Kangaskhan ROARED as soon as she entered the battle.
The battle was intense.
Kangaskhan used Work Up, then Mega Punch.
Snorlax countered with Mega Kick.
Lyra stayed calm.
"Focus Blast!"
The attack hit directly.
Snorlax weakened.
Lyra threw a Poké Ball.
After three shakes—
Click. Captured.
Ruby sighed in relief.
"Thank you. You saved our islands."
She gave them candied grapefruit peels as thanks.
With another badge earned and a new Pokémon captured, Lyra and her friends continued their journey—
toward the next challenge in the Orange Islands.
