Chapter 27 - Chapter 50-51

Chapter 50 – A New Beginning in Virginia Beach

Virginia Beach, Virginia – January 2017

The cold wind blew from the Atlantic Ocean, carrying with it the salty smell of the sea and the distant echo of seagulls. The waves broke gently against the shore, creating a steady and mesmerizing rhythm.

On the balcony of a ground-floor apartment facing the beach, Jason Gibbs held a mug of hot coffee, watching the ocean as the morning slowly dawned.

Behind him, Ziva David emerged from the kitchen, wrapped in a thick blanket, holding her own coffee cup.

She stopped beside him and took a deep breath of the cool morning air.

—Definitely colder than Hawaii.

Jason smiled slightly, without taking his eyes off the sea.

—Yes, but I think we can get used to it.

Ziva took a sip of her coffee, closing her eyes for a moment to appreciate the warmth of the drink.

—Why Virginia Beach, Gibbs?

Jason finally looked at her, resting his elbow on the balcony railing.

"Do you want the sentimental answer or the logical one?"

Ziva raised an eyebrow.

"Both."

Jason smiled.

"Well… the logical answer is that Virginia Beach is close to Washington, D.C., and important military bases like DAM NECK and NAVSPECWARCOM. If we need anything, we're well positioned."

Ziva nodded slowly.

"And the sentimental answer?"

Jason looked back at the ocean, his eyes softening.

"I grew up hearing stories about the Virginia coast. My father spent time here when he was young. And… I guess I always wanted to see it for myself."

Ziva watched him for a moment, a small smile playing on her lips.

"So now we have a connection to old Gibbs's past."

Jason chuckled softly.

"Yes. But it's also a good place to start something new." Ziva took another sip of her coffee and rested her head on his shoulder, gazing at the ocean beside him.

"I like it here."

Jason put an arm around her shoulders and smiled.

"So it's official. Virginia Beach is our new home."

The first few days were spent exploring their new surroundings.

They found cozy little cafes, fresh seafood restaurants, and even a discreet bar frequented by military personnel and veterans from the area.

"We're definitely surrounded by operators here," Jason commented one evening, observing the bar's clientele.

Ziva smiled, taking a sip of her wine.

"Did you think it would be any different? Virginia Beach is practically a sanctuary for the SEALs."

Jason laughed.

"Well, at least if we want company, we know where to find it."

As the months passed, Jason and Ziva settled into the town's tranquil routine.

In the mornings, they would run together on the beach before sunrise.

During the day, they explored the surroundings, trained together, and sometimes just enjoyed the quiet.

Ziva discovered a local bookstore she loved, and Jason started frequenting a discreet gym used by special forces veterans.

Life was simple.

And, for the first time in a long time… it was stable.

One night, while they were sitting on the beach sand, watching the waves under the moonlight, Ziva turned to Jason.

"Do you miss it?"

Jason knew exactly what she was talking about.

He was silent for a moment before answering.

"Sometimes."

Ziva nodded.

"Me too."

Jason looked at her, his expression serious.

"But I wouldn't trade this for anything."

Ziva smiled softly and took his hand, intertwining their fingers.

"Neither would I."

The sound of the waves filled the comfortable silence between them.

Virginia Beach was a new beginning. And they were ready to take advantage of it.

Chapter 51 – The Meeting at the Bar

Virginia Beach – A Bar for Veterans

The unassuming bar in the coastal region of Virginia Beach was known among special operators, veterans, and members of the armed forces as a safe haven. The kind of place where men and women who had spent years on the battlefield could relax, share stories, and, for a moment, forget the weight of operational life.

The bar door opened, and a robust figure, with the bearing of a born leader, entered.

Jason Hayes.

Behind him, Ray Perry, Sonny Quinn, Trent Sawyer, Brock Reynolds, Lisa Davis, Eric Blackburn, and Mandy Ellis followed inside, their presence immediately felt.

They were Bravo Team, one of the most respected units in DEVGRU, and everyone there knew it.

Clay Spenser, the newest member of the team, looked around, absorbing the atmosphere.

—Definitely a place for operators.

Sonny grinned slightly, already knowing exactly the type of people who frequented the bar.

"If we look closely, I bet we'll find some old acquaintances."

The group walked to the bar, ordering beers and whiskey, before heading to a large table at the back of the bar.

That's when Jason Hayes stopped abruptly.

His eyes met a familiar figure, sitting calmly in a corner of the bar, holding a glass of bourbon with a serene expression.

The man looked back and smiled slightly, as if he had been expecting the reunion.

"Well, well… if it isn't Team Bravo."

The group was surprised to see Jason Gibbs sitting there, looking relaxed, but at the same time carrying that air of someone who was always alert.

Ray's eyes widened.

"Gibbs?!"

Sonny gave a low whistle before laughing.

"Damn, partner, I thought you'd become an urban legend!"

Trent and Brock greeted Gibbs with nods, while Lisa and Mandy watched curiously.

The only one who didn't react immediately was Clay Spenser, who didn't know Gibbs.

Jason Gibbs stood slowly, raising his glass in an informal toast.

"It's been a while, huh?"

Jason Hayes smiled and approached, shaking Gibbs's hand firmly.

"You disappeared, man. I heard you retired from Delta, but after that… vanished."

Gibbs shrugged, picking up his glass again and taking a sip.

"I'm living like a nomad. No missions, no operations, just… living."

Ray crossed his arms, a nostalgic smile on his face.

"You, out of the game? That's hard to believe."

Gibbs chuckled softly.

"Yeah, I know. But after more than twenty years of service… I thought it was time."

Clay finally intervened, looking from one to the other.

"Excuse me, but… can someone tell me who this guy is?"

Sonny gave Clay a light tap on the shoulder and smiled.

"Little brother, you're in the presence of a living legend."

Jason Hayes nodded, turning to Clay.

"This is Jason Gibbs. He spent years in Delta, working on some of the most secretive and dangerous operations this country has ever seen. If there's one guy who's seen it all, it's him."

Clay raised his eyebrows, surprised.

"Wow… okay. That explains a lot."

Lisa and Mandy watched Gibbs with interest, exchanging glances.

Mandy, always on the lookout for intelligence, knew a little about him.

"What exactly are you doing right now, Gibbs?"

Gibbs smiled slightly and leaned over to get his drink.

"Traveling. No plans, no schedules." Just me and Ziva, exploring the world.

Lisa frowned.

"Ziva? Like Ziva David, ex-Mossad and NCIS?"

Gibbs chuckled softly and nodded.

"That's her."

The group exchanged impressed glances.

Ray laughed.

"You've always had peculiar tastes, brother."

Sonny took a sip of his beer and smiled.

"And what's it like life without combat?"

Gibbs took a deep breath, looking around the bar before answering.

"Different. Strange, sometimes. But honestly? I don't miss it. At least, not as much as I thought I would."

Jason Hayes was silent for a moment, watching Gibbs intently.

He understood.

Perhaps more than anyone else there.

"I think every operative, deep down, wants to find that kind of peace."

Gibbs nodded slowly. "Some find it sooner, others later. But eventually, everyone has to decide what to do when the war is over."

The group was silent for a moment, absorbing those words.

Clay, even being the youngest of the team, felt the weight of that conversation.

Lisa, always observant, noticed something in Jason Hayes' eyes.

"Have you thought about it, Jason?"

Jason Hayes looked away for a moment before looking back at Gibbs.

"Maybe. But I'm not ready yet."

Gibbs smiled slightly.

"You'll know when the time is right."

The night continued, the group sharing stories, reminiscing about old missions, and toasting to the old days.

Despite the years that had passed, Gibbs was still one of their own.

And even now, living a quieter life, he knew that the brotherhood between operators never disappeared.

As the night wore on, Jason Gibbs looked around the table, seeing the faces of those who, like him, had been through it all.

He knew that, no matter where he was, he would always be part of this family.
