Chapter 191 - Chapter 191: The Fourth Page

The manufacturing sector's final section cleared on the twelfth day.

He knew it was the final section before it completed because the spatial sense's read of the sector's ambient signature had been changing in character across the two weeks — the corruption's specific frequency fading section by section as the compound and the spatial law worked through the architecture. The change was cumulative and legible once you had been reading it long enough.

When the final section's extraction completed, the silence that followed was not the silence of an absence. It was the silence of a system that had been running under a foreign influence for twenty-five years resuming its own operational state.

The manufacturing sector's entity production didn't stop. What stopped was the wrath frequency. The entities in the incubation chambers began the slow process of metabolising the corruption out of their biology — the same process he had seen in the fauna after the source node's removal. Weeks, not days. But the production of new corrupted entities had ceased.

He sent the completion report to Valerian's office and to Isolde.

Isolde sent back: Manufacturing sector confirmed clean from the compound side. Beginning bridge application formulation. I need five more days.

He sent: You have them.

Then he went to his room in the citadel's habitation section and opened the Time law tome.

The fourth page opened.

Not dramatically — the way each page had opened, which was the specific quality of a comprehension threshold reached through accumulated understanding rather than forced application. The text became legible the same way the previous pages had: not as language, as the structural logic the notation was encoding.

He read it.

The fourth page described what the second and third pages had been building toward: the practitioner who had established their own temporal anchor and could read chronological echoes was not limited to reading the past of the physical environment around them. The temporal anchor they carried was a fixed point in the absolute flow. Another fixed point — like the temporal anchors his father had built in the northern frontier — could enter into a geometric relationship with the practitioner's anchor.

Two fixed points in the temporal flow, in geometric relationship, created a temporal-spatial node.

At a temporal-spatial node, the two timelines that shared an event in their past — like the fracture, which both the primordial world and the framework world had experienced as the same moment, their shared origin point before they diverged — could be brought into present contact.

Not merged. Not collapsed. The divergence since the fracture had been real and the two universes had continued independently. But the shared event existed in both timelines' records, and at a node where both timelines' anchor points were in geometric contact, the shared event could be made present.

The incomplete framework.

He held this carefully.

The framework's installation had not accounted for the temporal dimension. The spatial architecture was sound. The temporal dimension had been left as an implicit structure — acknowledged in the anchor network, but not integrated. The anchors recorded the intervals. They preserved the possibility of integration. But they could not perform the integration themselves; they were recording devices, not active mechanisms.

The fourth page's final section described what was needed.

A practitioner at 100% spatial law who had established their own temporal anchor and had sufficient time law comprehension to maintain geometric alignment with a pre-existing temporal anchor — that practitioner, at the point of contact between two temporal-spatial systems, could serve as the active integration mechanism. Not for the entire framework. For the specific node where the contact occurred.

The Sector 12 temporal anchor. Vorash's bridge arrival point. The megalithic arch.

His parents had built the arch at that coordinate deliberately. They had not built it as an entry point. They had built it as the designated integration site — the specific location where, when the bridge completed and someone with the right combination of spatial and temporal comprehension stood at the anchor, the temporal dimension's missing integration could be performed.

They had spent two million years preparing for this.

They had been waiting for him to develop the comprehension that would make it possible.

He sat with the fourth page's content for a long time.

The comprehension level he had now was not sufficient. The fourth page told him what was needed and described the mechanism clearly. But performing the integration at the temporal-spatial node required a time law comprehension level the page characterised as a specific threshold — and he was not yet at that threshold.

He was closer than he had been.

The weeks of work in the citadel, the conversation with Vorash, Rael's Undoing faction documentation, the manufacturing sector's extraction, the bridge compound's development — all of it had been the accumulated correct thinking that the law required.

He estimated the gap between where he was and where the fourth page's integration would be possible.

Weeks. Not months. The comprehension was accumulating faster than it had been at the lower levels, which was the specific property of law comprehension in its upper reaches — the available surface area for new understanding grew as the existing understanding became more solid.

He needed Vorash to know the bridge's completion timeline had a reason to wait.

He needed Isolde to know the bridge compound's application was not the final step.

He needed to contact Nyx to confirm that what the fourth page described was what they had designed.

He started with Nyx.

The contact came through the established channel — the spatial-consciousness link that had been open since the 50% spatial law threshold, carrying the specific quality of communication across the interior of a black hole translated through two million years of temporal dilation.

Markus.

The fourth page opened, he sent.

The pause was the specific one she used when the thing she had been waiting for had arrived and she was allowing herself to receive it.

Yes, she sent. The fourth page.

The integration at the temporal-spatial node, he sent. The Sector 12 anchor. You built the arch there as the integration site.

Your father chose that coordinate, she sent. The specific anchor with the optimal geometric properties for what we designed. We built the arch to give you the crossing point we couldn't provide from inside.

I'm not there yet, he sent. The comprehension isn't sufficient for the integration. But I'm close.

We know, she sent. We have been reading your development through the connection since the 50% threshold. The gap you're describing — we estimate it at the rate you've been developing: four to five weeks.

Vorash's bridge, he sent. When it completes, I need to be at the Sector 12 anchor for the integration to work.

Yes, she sent. The bridge's crossing and the integration are the same event. The bridge brings the primordial side into contact with the framework side at the anchor coordinate. The integration completes what the framework left incomplete at that coordinate. The two things are not sequential — they are simultaneous. Vorash's crossing is the mechanism. Your integration is the consequence.

The Undoing faction's argument, he sent. That the framework's incompleteness makes it worse than no framework.

Their argument is correct about the incompleteness, she sent. It is wrong about the consequence. An incomplete framework that is being integrated — that is completing its design — is not a failed framework. It is a framework being built correctly across the timescale the design required.

Two million years, he sent.

Long enough for you to exist and develop, she sent. The design required someone with both your father's spatial law and his temporal law capacity. That specific combination does not arise quickly.

He held this.

When, he sent.

When you're ready, she sent. The fourth page has opened. The comprehension will complete when it completes. You have been working correctly — that is all that is required.

And after the integration, he sent. What happens at the contact point?

After the integration, she sent, the framework is complete at the Sector 12 coordinate. A completed framework boundary is a stable one. The Undoing faction's attack surface at that coordinate is closed.

Only at that coordinate, he sent.

Each anchor integration closes the attack surface at one coordinate, she sent. The network has many anchors. We designed it that way — the completion can be distributed. Each node is one integration event.

You designed a multi-decade integration programme, he sent.

Yes, she sent. Though we hoped it would not take as long as the construction required. Some things we could not control from inside the black hole.

There was something in that communication that was as close to warmth as the medium allowed.

The manufacturing sector, he sent. We've cleared it. The bridge compound is five days from completion.

I know, she sent. Isolde's work. The Aurelian lineage kept the knowledge.

She's here, he sent. Working in Vorash's archive.

Good, she sent. She will understand the bridge compound's behaviour at the contact point better than any current practitioner. When the integration occurs, the compound should not be active in the construction material.

I'll tell her, he sent.

Markus, she sent.

He waited.

You have been working correctly, she sent. All of it. The choices and the development and the people you have done this with. Correctly.

He received this.

He did not have words for the medium.

He sent back the impression that the medium carried when words were insufficient: the felt quality of understanding, received fully.

The contact faded.

He went to find Isolde.

She was in the archive, which was where she had been for twelve days, and she did not look up when he came in because she was at a stage of the formulation work that required the full resources of her attention.

He waited.

She completed the notation she was working through and looked up.

He explained what the fourth page had told him and what Nyx had confirmed.

She listened.

When he finished she was quiet for a moment.

"The compound should not be active in the bridge material at the moment of contact," she said.

"Yes," he said.

"Which means I need to formulate the bridge application with a decay cycle," she said. "The compound does its extraction work and then becomes inert within a specified window. The window has to be long enough for the extraction to complete but short enough that the compound is inert by the time the crossing occurs."

"Yes," he said.

"And the crossing is timed to your comprehension reaching the fourth page's threshold," she said.

"Yes," he said.

She looked at him.

"Four to five weeks," she said.

"That's Nyx's estimate," he said.

"Then I have four to five weeks to formulate the bridge application with the correct decay cycle," she said. She looked at the archive. "That's achievable."

She picked up her notation instrument.

"Go work on the time law," she said. "I have a formulation to adjust."

He went.
