Chapter 19 - "When The Last Bell Rang"

Spring arrived before we realized it. The snow melted, the cold wind disappeared, and flowers slowly began to bloom around town. With every passing day, graduation came closer. What once felt far away was now standing right in front of us. The final week of school arrived, and everyone talked about the future. Some students were excited, some were nervous, and others tried to pretend nothing was changing. But deep down, everyone knew that soon this chapter of our lives would end.

The morning of our final school day felt strange. The hallways looked exactly the same, the classrooms were exactly the same, and even the desks and windows had not changed. Everything looked normal, yet somehow everything felt different. I walked into the classroom and found Purmodo already sitting there. For once, he was not making noise. He simply sat quietly.

"You're unusually calm today," I said.

Purmodo laughed softly. "Maybe because today is real."

"What do you mean?" I asked.

He looked around the classroom. "Tomorrow, we won't be sitting here together anymore."

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Aarihito arrived shortly after.

"Why do you both look so serious?" he asked.

"Because someone finally realized graduation is today," I replied.

"Impossible," Aarihito said. "Purmodo being serious? The world must be ending."

Purmodo rolled his eyes. "Very funny."

Soon Ritou entered the room. When our eyes met, she smiled.

"Good morning," she said.

"Good morning," I replied.

She sat beside me and whispered, "Can you believe this is our last day?"

I shook my head. "Honestly, no."

The classes passed quickly, almost too quickly. Teachers gave their final speeches, students exchanged messages and signatures, and everyone took photos together.

At one point our teacher stood in front of the class and smiled.

"You've all worked hard," she said. "No matter where life takes you, don't forget the friends sitting beside you today."

The classroom became silent.

Then Purmodo raised his hand.

"Will there be homework after graduation?"

The entire class burst into laughter.

Even the teacher laughed.

"No, Purmodo."

"Best day ever," he replied.

Before we realized it, the final class ended. Silence filled the room. Nobody stood up immediately because everyone knew what was coming next. The final bell. The bell that would end our school days forever.

Then it happened.

The familiar ringing sound echoed through the entire school.

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

"The last bell..." Ritou whispered.

"Yeah," I said quietly.

"We'll never hear it like this again."

Some students smiled while others cried. Some stared out the window, trying to remember every detail of the place they were about to leave behind.

After school, our group gathered one final time beneath the old tree near the school gate, the place where many of our memories had begun. The afternoon sunlight shined softly through the leaves.

For a while, nobody spoke.

Then Purmodo finally broke the silence.

"Well... we actually made it."

Aarihito nodded. "We survived school."

"Barely," Purmodo replied.

Ritou laughed.

Purmodo looked at all of us.

"You know, I'm going to miss this."

"We're not disappearing," Aarihito said.

"Exactly," I added. "We're still friends."

Purmodo pointed at us dramatically.

"Promise?"

"Promise," I said.

"Promise," said Ritou.

"Promise," said Aarihito.

Purmodo smiled. "Good."

As the afternoon slowly turned into evening, we shared stories from the past.

"Remember when Purmodo got lost during the school trip?" Aarihito asked.

"I was not lost," Purmodo protested.

"You called the teacher crying," Ritou reminded him.

"That information was supposed to stay secret!"

Everyone laughed loudly.

"And remember the sports festival?" Ritou asked.

"When you fell into the mud?" I said.

Her face immediately turned red.

"Don't remind me!"

The laughter continued.

For a little while, it felt like nothing had changed.

Eventually, the sky turned orange, then pink, and finally golden as the sun began to set.

One by one, everyone began saying goodbye.

Aarihito left first with his girlfriend.

Before leaving, he smiled.

"Take care, everyone."

"You too," we replied.

Purmodo followed shortly after.

Before leaving, he looked back at us.

"This isn't the end."

"It isn't," I agreed.

"We'll meet again," Ritou said.

Purmodo grinned.

"Then don't forget me when you're all rich and famous."

"We won't," I laughed.

"Good."

He waved dramatically and ran off.

Soon only Ritou and I remained.

The school stood quietly behind us while the setting sun painted everything in warm colors.

For a while, we simply stood there together.

Then Ritou spoke softly.

"Do you remember the first day we met?"

"Of course."

"You looked really nervous."

"I was nervous."

She laughed.

"I could tell."

"What about you?"

"I was nervous too."

"You hid it better."

"Maybe."

We both smiled.

She looked toward the school before turning back to me.

"We've come a long way."

"Yeah."

"I don't regret any of it."

"Neither do I."

A gentle breeze passed between us.

Ritou slowly reached for my hand.

"I was scared graduation would feel lonely," she admitted.

"Does it?"

She shook her head.

"No."

"Why?"

A small smile appeared on her face.

"Because you're here."

My heart skipped a beat.

I squeezed her hand gently.

"And I'll keep being here."

She smiled warmly.

"That's a promise?"

"That's a promise."

As the last sunlight faded beyond the horizon, I took one final look at the school.

The classrooms, the hallways, the memories, and the friendships would always stay with us.

Ritou gently leaned her head against my shoulder.

We stood there quietly for a moment.

Then she smiled and said, "Ready for our next chapter?"

I smiled back.

"Yeah. Let's go."

Together, we started walking forward, leaving the school behind but carrying its memories with us forever. The last bell had rung. Our school days were over. But our story, our friendships, and our future were only just beginning.

The End.
