The next morning before school started, just as Zack parked his motorcycle, Evan approached him. Evan was wearing blue jeans, a grey t-shirt and his football jacket. The bruises from yesterday's fight were visible on his face. "Hey man can we talk?" he asked in a low voice. Zack took of his helmet and his expression darkened instantly at the sight of Evan approaching him. He swung his leg off the motorcycle, his first clenching at his sides. "What do you want?" he growled, getting of his motorcycle and taking a step toward Evan. "Come to cry about getting your ass kicked?" He gestured pointedly at the bruises on Evan's face. "Those should teach you to keep you fucking hands off what is mine. If you have something to say, spit it out," he challenged, his voice rising slightly. "Otherwise get lost before I finish what I started yesterday." Evan sighs and takes a step back. "Look man, I was an asshole yesterday. I should not have said what I said," he admits with a defeated expression then he looks around at the crowd. "Can we talk somewhere else?" he asks, looking around at the other student who have stopped to watch.
Zack's expression shifted from aggressive to surprised, his fists unclenching slightly. He had not expected Evan to Apologize so readily. "Fine, let's go," he said, nodding toward the empty hallway behind the gym. He followed Evan down the hallway, away from the curious eyes of their classmates. Once they were alone, Zack crossed his arms and leaned against the wall. "Alright, you have got my attention, what exactly did you want to say?" he said, his voice still wary but no longer hostile. His gaze flickered to the bruises on Evan's face, a hint of guilt crossing his features before he quickly masked it with his usual cocky demeanour. "You better not be here to try and get back together with her, because that is not happening." Zack warned, his jaw tightening. "No, no definitely not," Evan said quickly. "Look you were right, I was jealous. I do not really know why. Not like I want to date her or whatever." he said, trying to act casual. Zack's eyes narrowed studying Evan's face carefully for any sign of deception. "Jealous?" he repeated sceptically. "Since when do you get jealous over anyone?" He pushed off the wall and took a step closer, his height advantage making Evan look smaller. "And don't give me that bullshit about not wanting to date her," Zack added sharply. "You were practically begging yesterday." His hands clenched into fists again, the anger returning at the memory of Evan touching Anna in the library. "If you are here to apologize just so I will let my guard down...."
Evan shakes his head, "No, seriously," he sighed and leaned against the wall. "I mean the girls special or whatever. But I don't want to be like her boyfriend. That is the whole reason why I broke her heart." Evan looked away uncomfortably and continued, "Look I felt bad for being so... So, mean to her. And I thought maybe you were playing her too. I was not trying to win her back or anything." Evan ran his hands through his hair. "I don't know what I was trying to do," he admits. Zack's expression softened slightly, his shoulders relaxing as he processed Evan's words. The initial hostility in his posture faded, replaced by a grudging acceptance. "Fuck, you are actually being honest for once," he muttered, running a hand through his own hair. He leaned back against the wall beside Evan, creating a brief moment of camaraderie between them. "I get it, she is different from other girls. It is easy to get caught up in that," Zack admitted reluctantly. His gaze drifted toward the hallway where students were starting to arrive for school. "But you were a complete dick about it, breaking up with her because you thought she was getting too serious? That is low even for you."
"Hey, no we did not break up. We hooked up and then camp ended. She thought it meant something... But yeah, I was a complete dick. Look just tell me you are serious about her or whatever. Then we can drop all this chit chat," Evan said casually. Zack's eyebrows shot up in surprise at Evan's confession. "Wait, what?" he exclaimed, his voice echoing slightly in the empty hallway. "You mean you never actually dated her? You just slept with her and then disappeared?" His hands flew to his hips, his expression shifting from defensive to incredulous. "Are you fucking kidding me right now?" he demanded loudly. "This whole time you were just some summer fling?" Students passing by slowed their pace to glance curiously at the two boys arguing near the gym entrance. Zack did not seem to notice or care. "And she thought it meant something?" Zack continued, his voice rising with indignation. "Of course, she did! Because unlike you, she actually cares about people!" He stepped closer to Evan, poking him in the chest repeatedly. "You are a piece of shit," he said angrily.
"I thought she knew hook ups during a camp is just a summer fling, and when she got all serious, I did not know what to do. With the cheerleaders I normally just buy them a gift and they move on. I bought her really nice, expensive chocolates..." Evan said with a shrug. Zack's expression shifted from anger to something more complex- a mix of pity and disgust. He let out a harsh laugh, shaking his head. "Chocolate?" he repeated incredulously. "You think expensive chocolates makes up for treating her like some disposable camp fling?" He paced a few steps away, running both hands through his hair in frustration. "Fucking hell, Evan. You are even more clueless that I thought." Turning back to face him, Zack's voice dropped to a low, dangerous tone. "The other girls at the camp did not seem to mind," Evan muttered. "So what? Should I apologize? How do I get you to stop being mad?"
