Chapter 5 - The Awakening

Chapter 5

The creature's wings spread across the clearing, blocking out the moonlight.

Ariana had never seen anything like it. Its form was humanoid, but dark feathers covered its shoulders and arms like armor, and massive wings curved behind it, stretching wide enough to dominate the entire space. Its silver eyes glowed cold and steady, fixed directly on her as if nothing else existed. A chill ran through her body, deep and instinctive, the kind that didn't come from fear alone but from something older. "What is that?" she whispered.

Kael stepped slightly in front of her without hesitation, his body shielding hers in a way that felt instinctive rather than deliberate. "A problem," he said. His voice was calm, but tension coiled beneath it, ready to snap. The creature tilted its head, studying them with unsettling patience before speaking. "Alpha Vaughn." Its voice carried across the clearing, low and controlled, yet powerful enough to silence everything around them. "You should step aside."

Kael didn't move. "That's not happening." Behind them, the council hunters poured out of the broken house, spreading across the clearing as torches flickered violently in the wind. The tension thickened instantly, suffocating and sharp. Cassian stepped forward, watching with open interest, his expression almost amused. "Well," he murmured, "this is unexpected." The winged creature didn't even look at him. Its attention remained locked on Ariana.

"We are not here for the council," it said. "We are here for the Fifth Blood." Ariana felt Kael's grip tighten slightly around her wrist, grounding her even as her pulse raced out of control. "Who are you?" Kael demanded. The creature regarded him for a moment before answering. "A name your kind once knew. We were called Guardians." Kael's expression darkened. "That title died centuries ago." "Did it?" the creature replied calmly.

Ariana's thoughts were spinning too fast to hold onto. Hunters. Vampires. Guardians. All of them were here for her. All of them looking at her like she was something more than human. The creature stepped forward slowly. "The Fifth Blood must come with us." Kael didn't move. "No." The creature's eyes narrowed slightly. "You misunderstand, Alpha. This is not a request." Kael's wolf surged beneath the surface. "Try."

The clearing fell silent. Cassian let out a soft chuckle, leaning casually against a tree as if he had all the time in the world. "Oh, this is getting interesting," he said, his red eyes gleaming. "The council wants her dead. You want to take her. And the Alpha refuses both." His smile widened slightly. "I'm curious how this ends." The creature ignored him completely and looked back at Ariana. "You feel it, don't you?"

Ariana froze. The light beneath her skin pulsed again, stronger this time, reacting to the creature's presence as if it recognized it. Her breath caught. "I don't know what you're talking about," she said, but her voice betrayed her. "You do," the creature replied. "You are the Fifth Blood. You were always meant to awaken." Ariana shook her head, panic tightening in her chest. "No." "Yes." Its tone never changed. "The balance of this world is breaking, and you are the key to restoring it."

Kael stepped forward again, placing himself more firmly between them. "She's not going anywhere with you." The creature finally shifted its gaze to him. "You cannot protect her forever." "Watch me." For a moment, neither of them moved. Then the creature exhaled slowly. "Very well. We tried diplomacy." Its wings lifted slightly, and then it moved.

Ariana barely saw it happen. One second it stood across the clearing. The next, it was right in front of her. She gasped as Kael lunged, but the creature was faster. Its hand closed around her wrist.

The moment their skin touched, everything broke.

Light exploded across the clearing. Ariana screamed as power surged through her body, sharp and overwhelming, tearing through her veins like something forcing its way out. Wind roared outward, extinguishing every torch at once and throwing the hunters back. Even Cassian stepped away, his expression shifting for the first time. "What is this?" someone shouted. The creature froze, its silver eyes widening slightly. "The power…" it whispered.

Ariana cried out as the energy ripped through her, her body shaking under the force of it. It felt like something inside her was breaking open, something too large to contain. Kael reached her instantly, grabbing her shoulders. "Ariana!" The ground trembled beneath them as the light spread across her body, moving from her arms to her chest, climbing toward her heart. The creature released her abruptly. "This shouldn't be happening."

Kael pulled her behind him. "What did you do to her?" "I did nothing," the creature said, still staring at her. Cassian stepped forward slowly, his voice cutting through the chaos. "Well…" His amusement had faded into something sharper. "That explains everything." Kael turned toward him. "Explains what?" Cassian's gaze locked onto Ariana. "The prophecy."

Ariana barely heard him. The power inside her was too loud, too strong, drowning everything else out. "What prophecy?" Kael demanded. Cassian's smile deepened slightly. "The one the council buried." He didn't look away from her. "The Fifth Blood does not awaken alone." Kael went still. "What does that mean?" Cassian's voice dropped. "It means you're already too late."

Ariana's breath shook. "Too late for what?" Cassian's eyes flickered with something darker. "For the bond." Kael's heart slammed against his ribs. "What bond?" Cassian's expression sharpened. "The one forming right now." Kael turned toward Ariana, and then he saw it.

The silver light in her veins flickered, then shifted. The color deepened, turning into gold. The same gold as his eyes.

"No…" Kael whispered.

The golden light burst outward again, throwing everyone back as the force surged through the clearing. When it faded, silence followed. Kael pushed himself up, his breath catching as he looked at her.

Ariana was no longer on the ground.

She hovered above it, golden light surrounding her, steady and overwhelming. When she opened her eyes, they were no longer human. They were gold, bright and ancient in a way that made the air itself feel heavier.

Cassian took a slow step back. "The prophecy…" he murmured.

Kael stared at her, something shifting deep inside him. Because for the first time since meeting her, his wolf did not say mate.

It said one word, clear and absolute.

Queen.
