Chapter 7 - The High Alpha’s Command

Chapter 7

The clearing fell into complete silence the moment the massive white wolf stepped forward. Even the council hunters hesitated, their weapons lowering slightly as the creature shifted into human form. The man who emerged carried an authority that pressed against the air itself, heavy and controlled, as if everything around him had already accepted his dominance. His icy blue eyes locked onto Ariana, and they did not leave her.

Kael Vaughn's body went rigid. Of all the enemies that could have appeared, this was the worst possible one. Cassian's voice broke the silence, quieter now, edged with caution. "The High Alpha." The man stepped forward slowly, his boots sinking into the broken ground, his presence overwhelming without needing to prove it. His gaze shifted briefly to Kael. "Step aside." Kael tightened his hold on Ariana without hesitation. "No." The answer was steady, but the tension around them sharpened immediately.

The High Alpha studied him with cold patience. "You are standing between the council and a threat to the entire supernatural world." Kael did not move. "She's not a threat." "The Fifth Blood always becomes one," the High Alpha replied. Ariana stirred weakly in his arms, her body heavy and drained, her golden eyes flickering open as if the effort alone cost her something. "Kael…" she whispered. "I'm here," he answered quietly, his grip tightening just enough to steady her.

The High Alpha's gaze darkened the moment he saw her eyes. "So it's true. The awakening has begun." Cassian let out a soft laugh, stepping forward slightly. "Oh, it's more interesting than that." The High Alpha's attention snapped toward him. "Explain." Cassian gestured toward them with a faint smile. "The Alpha bond has already formed." For the first time, the High Alpha's expression shifted, his focus returning sharply to Kael. "You bonded with her?" Kael's jaw tightened. "I didn't choose it." "That doesn't matter," the High Alpha said. "The bond can be broken."

Kael's chest tightened. "How?" The answer came without hesitation. "Kill her." The words hit Ariana hard, stealing what little breath she had left. Kael's eyes burned with something darker. "That's not happening." The High Alpha stepped closer, his voice sharper now. "You're thinking like a mate." "I am a mate." "You're also an Alpha," he replied. "You swore loyalty to the council." Kael's jaw clenched. "Not at the cost of her life."

The tension in the clearing thickened, pressing in from all sides as the hunters shifted, waiting for a command. Ariana forced herself to stand, even though her legs trembled beneath her weight. She moved beside Kael instead of staying behind him, her chest tight but her voice steady enough to hold. "I'm not something you can just kill." The High Alpha studied her carefully. "You don't understand what you are." "Then explain it." He paused, then said, "Your power will destroy the balance between bloodlines." Ariana shook her head, her throat tightening. "I didn't ask for this." "No one ever does."

Cassian glanced toward the forest, his expression sharpening slightly. "We're running out of time. The rest of the council is arriving, and when they do, this place will turn into a battlefield." Kael felt it too, dozens of presences closing in, fast and deliberate. "We need to go," he said. The High Alpha stepped forward again. "You're not leaving with her." Kael's wolf surged hard beneath his skin. "Watch me." The High Alpha's eyes glowed faintly. "You think you can challenge me?"

Kael didn't answer. He shifted. Bones cracked and muscle expanded as the massive black wolf took his place, the ground trembling under his weight. The High Alpha watched him calmly before shifting as well, his white wolf larger, heavier, and far more powerful. The clearing suddenly felt too small for both of them. Cassian stepped aside with quiet interest. "Good," he said. "I was hoping for this." Ariana's chest tightened as she stepped forward instinctively. "Stop!" she shouted, but neither of them moved. Their eyes locked, and the tension snapped.

The white wolf lunged first. The impact shook the clearing as they collided, claws tearing through the ground and bodies slamming with brutal force. Kael fought with everything he had, fast and controlled, refusing to give ground, but the difference in strength became clear too quickly. The High Alpha was stronger, older, and far more experienced. Within seconds, Kael was forced down, his body hitting the ground hard enough to crack the earth beneath him.

Ariana's chest tightened painfully as she watched it happen. "Kael!" The white wolf's jaws closed around his throat, and for one frozen second, everything stopped. One bite would end it. The thought hit her so hard it felt like her chest was being crushed from the inside. Something inside her snapped. The power surged again, faster and stronger than before, rising through her like it had been waiting for that exact moment.

"Stop!" The word tore out of her, stronger than anything she had said before. Golden light burst from her body, cracking the ground beneath her feet as it spread outward in a wave. Every creature in the clearing froze. Even the High Alpha. His jaws loosened as his blue eyes shifted toward her, something new in his expression. Surprise.

Ariana was no longer standing. Golden light surrounded her, lifting her slightly as the air around her bent under the pressure of it. Behind her, something began to take shape, not fully solid, but real enough to see. Wings formed slowly, stretching outward, and above her head, a crown of golden fire flickered into existence.

Cassian stared at her, the amusement gone from his face for the first time. "Well," he said quietly, "that changes everything."
