Chapter 45 - Letters

Katarina reorganized her desk on Monday.

Then, se reorganized it again on Tuesday, this time by category instead of date, which was objectively better and kept her busy for almost forty minutes.

On Wednesday she audited the pantry. She counted the salt reserves twice and was halfway through a third count when Ottavia came in, took one look at her, and pointed at the door.

"Out."

"I-I'm just—"

"OUT."

Katarina left the pantry.

She tried to read the history assignments Aurelia had given her last month, made it three pages in, and realized she'd read the same paragraph four times without absorbing a word.

The problem was that there was nothing to do. For once, her own efficiency was working against her.

She'd sent the Compasso application, handled Coppara, and the sanitation project was running on schedule without her, which was exactly what a good manager should want and was driving her absolutely insane.
