Chapter 44 - The Assessment

The assessor arrived on a Tuesday, which honestly felt kind of wrong.

Important things should happen on important-sounding days, was Kat's firm opinion. Tuesdays were for filing paperwork and regretting the decisions you made on Monday. 

In any case, Lissara stepped out of the hired carriage, looked at the Montecardi estate, and did not appear impressed. She was human, tall, with dark hair pulled back tight, and she looked like she had never once laughed at a joke. She wore a grey Compasso uniform with no ornamentation and carried a leather folio and a single pen.

"Signora Montecardi."

"Assessor Lissara. Welcome to Vellasera."

"Thank you. Where will the demonstration be held?"

No small talk, no tea.

Katarina liked her immediately.

"The estate courtyard."

"Fine. Lead the way."
