Chapter 103 - Dinner & Trust

Dinner went better than anyone expected.

The lamb pie had a golden crust, a rich smell, and only one slightly uneven edge where Haley had struggled with the pastry. She carried it to the table with both hands, moving carefully enough that Phil stopped talking mid-sentence and watched her like she was transporting something explosive.

Jack sat beside her while the rest of the Dunphys gathered around. Claire looked at the pie, then at Alex. Alex gave her a small, confused shake of the head.

It was not Claire's pie.

Haley had discovered the switch before dinner and quietly switched them back.

She cut the first slice and placed it on Jack's plate. The filling held together better than she had feared. Steam rose from the lamb, vegetables, and mashed potato beneath the crust.

Jack took a bite while Haley watched him with an intensity that made it impossible to pretend this was just dinner.

He chewed slowly.

It was not perfect.

The rosemary was a little strong, and the potatoes could have used more salt. One corner of the crust was thicker than the rest. But it was warm, filling, and far better than the spaghetti and meatballs she had made months earlier, when the meatballs had somehow been burned outside and cold in the middle.

More importantly, Jack knew the taste.

It was Haley's.

Not because he had eaten enough of her cooking to recognize some special style, but because the pie felt like something she had worked too hard on. And that cute expression on her face was too hard to ignore.

"So how is it?" Haley asked, smiling while trying not to look desperate for praise.

Jack took another bite before answering.

"It's good. Looks like you've been taking those classes seriously."

The relief on her face appeared instantly.

She tried to hide it by reaching for her water, but Jack saw the small smile she pressed against the rim of the glass.

Phil praised the crust with far too much enthusiasm. Alex quietly ate while watching Claire from across the table. Luke asked for another slice before finishing his first, which Haley took as the greatest compliment of the night.

Claire barely touched hers.

She kept looking toward the kitchen, probably wondering when the switch had been reversed and how much Haley knew.

Conversation moved around the table easily. Phil talked about a house he was trying to sell to a couple who disagreed over everything except the backyard. Alex complained about a school project. Luke described a business idea involving renting Robo-Phil to children's parties.

Jack told them a little about the GQ shoot, mostly the parts involving endless clothing changes and strangers adjusting his sleeves every thirty seconds.

Haley stayed close beside him, her knee pressed against his under the table. Every few minutes, she glanced at his plate to make sure he was still eating.

He finished everything.

When he asked for a second helping, Haley looked so happy that Claire lowered her eyes toward her own plate.

After dinner, Claire stood and announced that she would bring out dessert.

Haley rose immediately.

"I'll help."

Claire paused for half a second before forcing a smile. "You don't have to."

"I know."

The tone made Alex look down at the table.

Haley followed Claire into the kitchen and waited until the doorway blocked most of the dining room from view.

Claire opened the refrigerator and reached for the dessert tray, pretending not to notice the way Haley stood behind her with folded arms.

"How dare you swap my pies?"

Claire's hand stopped.

She slowly turned around. "I don't know what you're talking about."

"Luke told me everything."

Of course he had.

Luke had lasted less than five minutes after Haley promised him twenty dollars and the remaining half of Claire's hidden backup pie.

Claire tried to explain that she had only wanted dinner to go well. She said Jack had traveled all day, Haley had worked hard, and nobody wanted the evening ruined because of one recipe.

That explanation only made Haley angrier. "After everything I did to try to be better, and turn my life around, and do something for the person I love, you still didn't trust me." Her voice stayed low, but the hurt inside it made the words sharper.

Claire's expression softened.

Haley looked toward the dining room, where Jack was laughing at something Phil had said.

"I know I'm not good at this yet," she continued. "But I'm trying. I took classes, and I practiced, and I made that pie myself because I wanted to do something nice for him."

Claire started to speak, but Haley shook her head.

"You just had to put your nose in and fix it before I even had the chance to fail."

That landed harder than Claire expected.

Haley had spent years being protected from consequences, corrected before she could learn, or treated like the family member least likely to get things right. Claire had believed she was saving the evening.

Instead, she had nearly stolen the proof that Haley was capable of improving.

Haley picked up the dessert tray.

"For the record, Jack ate my pie. Not yours."

Then she grabbed the dessert tray from the fridge and walked back toward the dining room, leaving Claire alone in the kitchen with the uncomfortable realization that her daughter had grown enough to notice when help became disrespect.

"I can't help it..."

Claire let out a tired breath.

"When one of my kids is about to mess something up, every part of my body immediately goes, 'Fix it. Fix it now. Fix it before somebody cries, gets hurt, or serves undercooked lamb to a famous actor.'"

She raised one hand.

"And yes, I know Jack is more than a famous actor. He's Haley's boyfriend. I like him. He's wonderful."

Claire paused.

"But he is also worth millions of dollars, and food poisoning would become a very complicated family story."

She shifted slightly in her seat.

"I thought I was saving Haley from an embarrassing dinner. That was all. I wasn't trying to insult her, or make her feel stupid, or tell her she couldn't take care of the person she loves."

Claire's expression softened.

"But that's what she heard."

She looked down briefly before continuing.

"And honestly, I understand why."

Claire sighed.

"For years, I worried about Haley because she didn't take anything seriously. School, work, consequences, her future... She'd make a mistake, then smile like being pretty was a legal defense."

A faint smile appeared.

"Sometimes it worked."

Claire shook her head.

"Now she's working hard. She's taking cooking classes. She's building a career, handling difficult celebrities, and making dinner for her boyfriend after he's been away for weeks."

She paused.

"And instead of trusting her, I hid two pies in the garage like some kind of suburban pastry criminal."

Claire pressed her lips together.

"I guess I'm still getting used to the idea that Haley doesn't always need me to save her anymore."

Her expression became thoughtful.

"That's supposed to be the goal, right? You raise your kids so they can do things without you."

A beat passed.

"Nobody tells you how insulting that feels when they actually start doing it."

Claire gave a small, guilty smile.

"The worst part is, her pie was nice."

She nodded reluctantly.

"It wasn't perfect. There was way too much rosemary, and too little salt. And I was right... in a way."

[After Dinner] [Basement]

Haley pushed open the basement door and switched on the lights.

Jack followed her down the stairs, taking in the space as he went.

The basement looked completely different from the last time he had seen it. The old boxes, exercise equipment, forgotten holiday decorations, and random furniture had been cleared away. A bed sat against the far wall with soft blankets and too many pillows. A small television was across from it. On the other side of the room, there was a clothing rack, a vanity table, and a full-length mirror.

There were photographs taped around the mirror, including several of Haley and Jack from Miami, school events, birthdays, and random dates over the years.

A small couch sat near the center of the room beside a low table covered with fashion magazines.

Jack looked around.
