Chapter 3 - Shadows On The Path

The road leading out of Eldoria stretched far into the distance, winding between tall trees and uneven rocky hills. The morning sun had risen fully now, its light filtering gently through the thick branches above.

But something felt wrong.

The forest was too quiet.

No birds sang.

No animals moved.

Even the wind seemed… cautious.

Arin walked beside Mira, his thoughts heavy. His mind kept replaying everything that had happened the night before—the glowing emerald, the shadow creatures, the strange power inside him.

He looked down at his hands.

For a moment, he almost expected them to glow again.

The Master Emerald chose me… but why?

"Are you thinking about it again?" Mira asked, glancing at him.

Arin let out a slow breath.

"How could I not?" he replied. "Yesterday, I was just a normal boy from Eldoria. Now I'm supposed to protect some ancient emerald that controls unimaginable power."

Mira smiled slightly.

"You're not just a normal boy, Arin. You never were."

He looked at her, raising an eyebrow.

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"You're brave," she said simply. "You always run toward danger instead of away from it."

She crossed her arms, thinking for a moment.

"Remember when you climbed the old cliffs just to see what was at the top?"

Arin laughed quietly.

"I almost fell that day."

"Exactly," Mira replied. "But you didn't."

Her voice softened.

"You're stronger than you think."

Arin didn't respond immediately.

Instead, he looked ahead.

The mysterious traveler walked in front of them, calm and steady. His cloak moved gently with the wind, and his staff tapped softly against the ground with each step.

Tap… Tap… Tap…

He suddenly stopped.

Arin and Mira stopped as well.

The traveler raised his head slightly, looking toward the distant mountains.

"The floating island lies beyond those peaks," he said.

Arin followed his gaze.

High above the mountains, the clouds swirled in a strange circular motion. Even from far away, something about that place felt unnatural… powerful.

"That's where the Master Emerald is?" Arin asked.

"Yes," the traveler replied. "And it is where your journey truly begins."

Arin felt a faint warmth in his chest again.

A reminder.

A call.

"But reaching it will not be easy," the traveler continued. "Those who seek its power will try to stop you."

The moment he said that—

Rustle…

A sound came from the trees.

Mira froze.

"Did you hear that?" she whispered.

Arin nodded slowly.

The forest had gone completely still.

Then—

Another sound.

Closer this time.

Something was moving between the trees.

A shadow shifted.

Then another.

And another.

Arin's heartbeat began to rise.

"They found us already…"

From the darkness, the creatures stepped out.

Shadow beasts.

Their forms twisted like living smoke, their bodies unstable and shifting. Their glowing red eyes burned in the dim light, locked directly onto Arin.

The air grew colder.

He felt it instantly.

They were drawn to him.

The traveler stepped forward, raising his staff.

"Stay focused," he said calmly. "They are attracted to the emerald's power inside you."

One of the creatures let out a sharp, terrifying screech—

And lunged forward.

"Arin!" Mira shouted.

But Arin had already moved.

His body reacted before his mind could catch up.

Green light burst from his hands.

"Ah—!"

BOOM!

The energy shot forward and struck the creature directly, sending it crashing into a tree. The impact shook the ground, leaves falling around them like rain.

But there was no time to rest.

More creatures moved in.

Three… then four…

They surrounded them.

Arin clenched his fists tightly.

The power inside him pulsed again—stronger than before.

"I won't run," he said firmly.

Mira quickly grabbed a fallen branch and stepped beside him.

"Good," she said. "Because I'm not running either."

Another shadow beast rushed toward them.

Arin closed his eyes for a brief second.

Focus.

The warmth in his chest spread through his body—into his arms, into his hands.

He opened his eyes.

They glowed brighter than before.

"Then let's do this."

The creature attacked.

Arin stepped forward—

And released the energy.

FLASH!

A powerful wave of emerald light exploded outward.

BOOOOM!

The shockwave pushed everything back.

The shadow beasts were thrown into the air, their forms breaking apart under the force. Leaves, dust, and light filled the space like a storm.

For a moment…

Everything went silent.

Then—

The creatures slowly dissolved into black mist.

And disappeared.

The forest returned to stillness.

Arin dropped to one knee, breathing heavily.

"That… took a lot out of me…"

Mira quickly rushed to his side and helped him up.

"You did great!" she said, smiling.

Arin gave a small, tired laugh.

"I don't feel great…"

The traveler watched quietly, his expression thoughtful.

"Your power is growing faster than expected," he said.

Arin wiped sweat from his forehead.

"Growing?" he replied. "That felt more like barely surviving."

The traveler stepped closer.

"Every Guardian learns through struggle," he said.

"The Master Emerald is testing you… shaping you."

Arin looked down at his hands again.

This time, they were steady.

Then he looked forward.

Far above the mountains, the floating island shimmered faintly in the sky.

Its green light pulsed softly.

Calling him.

"I guess we keep moving," Arin said.

Mira nodded.

"Yeah. No turning back now."

They continued walking.

But they were not alone.

Deep within the forest, hidden behind thick trees and shadows…

Someone was watching.

A tall figure stood silently, his dark cloak blending perfectly with the darkness around him.

His red eyes glowed faintly.

"So…" he whispered.

"This is the new Guardian…"

He watched the place where the battle had just happened.

Then he smiled.

Cold.

Interested.

"Interesting."

The figure turned slowly.

And disappeared into the shadows.

Back on the road, Arin suddenly stopped.

A chill ran down his spine.

Mira looked at him.

"What's wrong?"

Arin turned slightly, looking back toward the forest.

"I feel like… someone is watching us."

The traveler nodded.

"That feeling will not go away," he said.

Arin looked at him.

"What do you mean?"

The traveler's voice became more serious.

"The enemies of the Master Emerald have now discovered you."

The wind began to blow again.

Stronger this time.

Carrying something unseen.

Arin looked forward.

The floating island pulsed in the sky.

His expression hardened.

"Then we'll be ready."

But deep down…

He knew.

This was only the beginning.
