The Climb to Destiny
By Prince Oracca Tetteh
The path ahead grew steeper as Arin, Mira, and the traveler continued their journey toward the mountains.
The forest behind them had slowly faded away, replaced by rocky terrain and rising cliffs. The air had changed—it was thinner, colder, and carried a strange energy that made every step feel heavier.
Above them, the floating island hovered in the sky.
Closer now.
Clearer.
The green light of the Master Emerald pulsed steadily, like a heartbeat echoing across the mountains.
Arin looked up at it, his eyes narrowing slightly.
"It feels stronger…" he said.
The warmth in his chest responded instantly, spreading through his body.
It wasn't just calling him anymore.
It was pulling him.
The traveler continued walking ahead, his staff tapping softly against the stone.
"That is because your connection to the emerald is growing," he said. "The closer you get, the more it recognizes you."
Mira glanced at Arin.
"Is that a good thing?"
The traveler paused for a moment before answering.
"Yes… and no."
Arin frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"The stronger your connection becomes," the traveler said, "the more visible you are to those who seek its power."
Mira crossed her arms.
"So basically… more enemies."
"Exactly."
A cold wind suddenly rushed through the mountain path.
Arin felt it immediately.
Not just the wind—
Something else.
He stopped walking.
"…Wait."
Mira looked at him.
"What is it?"
Arin looked around carefully.
The cliffs stood silent.
The rocks were still.
But the feeling was there.
Watching.
Waiting.
"They're close," he said quietly.
The traveler turned slightly.
"Stay alert."
Then—
CRACK!
A sharp sound echoed above them.
Arin looked up just in time.
"MOVE!"
A massive rock broke loose from the cliff and came crashing down.
BOOOOM!
The ground shook violently as it hit.
Dust filled the air.
Mira coughed, stepping back.
"That wasn't natural…"
Arin nodded.
"No… it wasn't."
From above—
Shapes appeared.
Dark figures moved along the cliffs.
Shadow beasts.
But these were different.
Larger.
Stronger.
Their forms were more stable, less like smoke and more like solid creatures.
Their red eyes glowed brighter than before.
The traveler raised his staff immediately.
"These are evolved shadow beasts," he said. "Be careful."
One of them jumped down from the cliff.
Then another.
And another.
They landed heavily, surrounding the group.
Arin clenched his fists.
The energy inside him reacted again.
Stronger.
Faster.
"I'll handle this," he said.
Mira stepped beside him.
"You're not doing this alone."
The first beast attacked.
It moved faster than the others before.
Arin reacted quickly, stepping forward.
"Emerald Strike!"
Green energy burst from his hand and collided with the creature.
BOOM!
The beast was pushed back—but not destroyed.
It growled, its body reforming instantly.
Arin's eyes widened.
"They're stronger…"
The traveler stepped in.
"Focus your energy! Don't release it wildly—control it!"
Another beast attacked from the side.
Mira swung her branch, hitting it hard enough to push it back slightly.
"Arin, now!"
Arin took a deep breath.
Focus.
The warmth inside him steadied.
He raised both hands.
Green light gathered—more concentrated this time.
"Emerald… Burst!"
BOOOOM!
A powerful explosion of energy spread outward.
This time—
The shadow beasts were completely destroyed.
Their bodies shattered into dark fragments and disappeared.
Silence returned.
Arin stood still, breathing heavily—but not as exhausted as before.
Mira smiled.
"That was better."
Arin nodded.
"Yeah… I'm starting to understand it."
The traveler looked at him with approval.
"Good. You are learning."
But his expression quickly turned serious again.
"This is only the beginning."
Arin looked up.
The floating island was much closer now.
He could clearly see the ancient structure on it.
The temple.
The Master Emerald's glow pulsed strongly.
Suddenly—
The ground began to shake.
RUMBLE…
RUMBLE…
Cracks spread across the mountain path.
Mira stepped back.
"What now?!"
The traveler's eyes widened slightly.
"This mountain is unstable…"
A loud cracking sound echoed.
CRAAAAACK!
Part of the path ahead collapsed, falling into the deep valley below.
Arin stared at the broken path.
"So… how do we get across that?"
The traveler walked forward calmly.
Then, raising his staff, he struck it against the ground.
A soft green light appeared.
Slowly—
A bridge of energy formed across the gap.
Mira's eyes widened.
"You could do that this whole time?!"
The traveler gave a small smile.
"Some paths only appear when necessary."
Arin stepped onto the glowing bridge carefully.
It felt solid.
Stable.
"Let's go," he said.
They crossed slowly.
Step by step.
As they reached the other side—
Arin suddenly stopped.
That feeling again.
Stronger than ever.
He turned slightly.
Far in the distance—
On another cliff—
A dark figure stood watching.
Red eyes glowing.
The same man from before.
Arin's expression hardened.
"He's here again…"
Mira followed his gaze but couldn't see clearly.
"Who?"
The figure didn't move.
Didn't attack.
He simply watched.
Then—
He disappeared.
The wind blew strongly again.
The moment was gone.
The traveler stepped forward.
"He is testing you," he said.
Arin clenched his fists.
"Next time… I won't hold back."
He turned toward the floating island.
Now closer than ever.
His eyes filled with determination.
"Let's finish this."
