Chapter 38 - Chapter 38 : Stay Still, I’ve Got You

Keifer's POV

The hospital room was quiet.

Too quiet.

Machines beeped softly in the background, steady and controlled—unlike the storm inside me.

Jay was awake now.

Sitting up against the bed, calm.

Too calm.

Like nothing had happened.

Like she hadn't collapsed in my arms just hours ago.

"You're thinking too much," she said suddenly.

I looked at her.

She was watching me.

Reading me.

Same as always.

"You fainted," I said flatly.

"And now I'm fine."

"No, you're not."

Her brows lifted slightly.

"And you're overreacting."

I let out a short breath.

Then stood up and walked toward her.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

"I saw you fall," I said, stopping right in front of her.

"You think I'm going to just sit quietly after that?"

She held my gaze.

Unshaken.

"I handled it."

"You hid it."

There it was.

Silence.

Sharp.

Jay's POV

He wasn't wrong.

But I wasn't going to just sit here and let him take over either.

"I didn't hide it," I said.

"I managed it."

His jaw tightened.

"You had a nail go through your foot and decided that was 'manageable'?"

I crossed my arms slightly.

"I cleaned it, dressed it, and continued functioning. That's literally my job."

"And collapsing is also part of your job?"

That hit.

But I didn't show it.

"I miscalculated the impact," I said calmly.

His expression changed slightly.

Not angry.

Frustrated.

Keifer's POV – Possessive Edge

I leaned down slightly, bracing one hand on the bed beside her.

"You don't get to 'miscalculate' when it comes to yourself."

Her eyes flickered.

"Keifer—"

"No," I cut her off.

My voice wasn't loud.

But it was firm.

"You take care of everyone else like their life matters."

I paused.

Then said it slower.

"Yours matters more to me."

That made her go quiet.

Good.

Because she needed to hear it.

Jay's POV – Holding Her Ground

I exhaled slowly.

"I know you care," I said.

His eyes softened slightly.

"But don't treat me like I'm fragile."

That stopped him.

"I'm not."

"I've handled worse things than this alone."

"And that's exactly the problem."

His voice dropped.

"You shouldn't have to."

I looked at him.

Really looked at him.

He wasn't trying to control me.

He was trying to… protect me.

Too much.

The Shift

"Keifer," I said softly.

"I didn't call you because I could handle it."

He didn't interrupt.

"I didn't want you to worry unnecessarily."

"And now?" he asked.

I held his gaze.

"Now I know you'll worry anyway."

A small, almost reluctant smile appeared on his face.

"Exactly."

Emotional Moment (Balanced)

I leaned back slightly.

"I'm not used to depending on someone."

He didn't respond immediately.

Good.

Because I wasn't asking for comfort.

Just stating a fact.

"But…" I continued quietly,

"I'm trying to let you in."

That changed everything.

His expression softened completely.

Not relief.

Not victory.

Just… understanding.

Keifer's POV – Softer, Still Possessive

I reached out and gently held her hand.

"You don't have to depend on me."

She looked at me.

"But you don't get to shut me out either."

Her fingers tightened slightly in mine.

"Deal?"

She hesitated for a second.

Then nodded.

"Deal."

Care Mode (Romantic)

I adjusted her blanket slightly.

"You're staying here for two days."

"I know."

"No work."

"I already handled that."

I raised a brow.

"Good."

She rolled her eyes slightly.

"You're enjoying this, aren't you?"

"A little."

She almost smiled.

Small Romantic Moment

I sat beside her properly this time.

Closer.

Not overwhelming.

Just enough.

"You didn't eat, did you?" I asked.

She didn't answer.

Which was answer enough.

I sighed.

"Unbelievable."

"I had coffee."

"That's not food, Jay."

"It works."

"It doesn't."

I leaned closer.

"From now on, you eat. Properly."

She raised a brow.

"Is that an order?"

"Yes."

She smirked slightly.

"Very bossy."

"And you like it."

She didn't deny it.

Again.

Quiet Intimacy

The room settled into a softer silence.

I brushed a loose strand of hair away from her face.

Her eyes followed the movement.

"You stayed," she said quietly.

I looked at her.

"Obviously."

"You didn't have to."

"I wanted to."

A pause.

Then—

"Don't get used to it," I added lightly.

She smiled faintly.

"Too late."

Late Night

She shifted slightly, wincing just a bit.

I noticed immediately.

"Don't move too much."

"I'm fine."

"Jay."

She sighed.

"Okay, okay."

I adjusted her position carefully, supporting her leg.

Better.

More comfortable.

Her eyes softened again.

"You're very… intense."

"I know."

"And a little overprotective."

"A little?"

She laughed softly.

"Okay, a lot."

Ending

She leaned back, her head resting lightly against the pillow.

But her hand didn't leave mine.

Neither did I.

"Go home," she said after a while.

"No."

"Keifer—"

"I'm not leaving you here alone."

I said it simply.

Like it wasn't even a question.

She looked at me for a long moment.

Then finally—

She let it go.

"Fine."

Victory.

Small.

But real.

Her eyes slowly closed.

And this time—

She slept peacefully.

And I stayed right there.

Watching.

Guarding.

Because this time—

Nothing was slipping through my hands again.
